    "Dry soil is like a dry sponge" is the analogy I always heard in the nursery business. Very hard to get the soil saturated after it's bone dry. I always water until I see bubbles, then water until I stop seeing them. Great video!

    One of the roles of zeolite in pon is actually to stabilize ph 🙂

    • @xiibalba1685
      @xiibalba1685 2 роки тому

      Do you think it would also work if added to soil?

    • @aniliname
      @aniliname 2 роки тому +2

      @@xiibalba1685 I often add pon to soil instead of perlite, so I don't see why not. I'm just not sure if the zeolite would be as "active" in terms of ph balance in a substrate that's not constantly moist like pon, but I guess it's worth a try.

    Great video! I’ve been been having problems with growth recently and the only thing I’ve changed is I’ve added way more horticultural charcoal to recent plantings. I have heard it can raise the ph greatly so I’m in the process of changing out the soil in many plants. I also bought a fertilizer called maxsea for acid loving plants. My water ph is neutral. I definitely need to start monitoring my soil ph.
    You also helped clarify the do it yourself pon mix. Thanks!💚

    LOVE this video, thank you! It wasn't shouty at all haha. I'll have to bookmark this for reference when I test the pH of my water. I would love to know how you sterilize your pon! I've considered boiling it like leca but wasn't sure how that'd work with the fertilizer balls and orchiata.

    • @youdontevengrowhere
      @youdontevengrowhere  2 роки тому +1

      I avoid boiling orchiata because it’ll just shorten its life span so with this pon mix I just run it under the hot water in the tap and manually sort out any old/dead roots! Without orchiata though, I don’t mind boiling pon because I’m not relying on the slow release fertilizer that they add in

    Very informative video, it's so nice to see you go through the demonstration of how to test the ph from your substrate and fertilizing routine. Are you using the MSU fertilizer from crystal star nursery? I believe they offer that fertilizer in hard and soft water form, if it's the csn one - which version do you use? I've never played around with ph up or down - but are there telltale signs in foliage or growth that water/substrate ph is too basic or acidic?

    • @youdontevengrowhere
      @youdontevengrowhere  2 роки тому

      Thank you Anita! I’m using the CSN one for RO/soft water. As for pH imbalance signs - if the pH is too high the nutrients cannot be dissolved and you might see chlorisis in the plants and “weak” looking foliage, and if pH is too high then it might present as “burned” looking foliage as there are too many nutrients available. I’m also still learning about pH as well so that’s as far as I understand for the time being!

    Helpful video, but I can't help but wonder why you didn't test watering soil/pon with Brita filtered water. I guess you could have already assumed the pH of Brita÷soil/pon run-off would be 2 digits less than plain tap+brita/pon as per your initial test.

    Nice tests, I just found this video while looking for information how the stones affect the pH. Unfortunately, my self mixed pumice/lava/zeolithe mix increases the pH value a lot and I really don't know why...

    • @youdontevengrowhere
      @youdontevengrowhere  2 роки тому

      I know that zeolite CAN increase pH because I’ve read that it’s had that effect in aquariums, but I think it can also lower pH depending on what is mixed with the zeolite because it has an ion exchange property that I don’t quite understand yet 😂

    If PH is 6.5 or 7.0 then Is it good for Philodenron / Alocasia ? or they prefer a bit more acid like 6 - 6.5 ?

    • @youdontevengrowhere

      I don’t boil orchiata because I don’t want to shorten its life span - I just run it under the hot water in the tap while stirring! Any dead roots in the substrate I just manually fish out. I imagine hydrogen peroxide could work as well!

    My soil that i use is cacti and succulents type and i add perlite, orchard bark and active charcoal. I do find the charcoal very good especially for Hoya’s as they tend to root rot more. Also it helps to keep pests away and clear toxins. I have a big change using it in my plants. Also i find bottom watering is good to keep away fungas gnats and for big plants i top water it and making is well drained. Which i notice I don’t get fungas gnats anymore. I just uploaded my plant collection please check it out. Also I would appreciated if you also subscribe to my channel. Thank you.
