One small fact check: The arena was not abandoned it was used by lower leagues futsal and basketball. It was a controversy in spain as they where kicked out and resigned their contracts from one day to another so that the kings league had exlusive use of the location half way throughout the season.

I found the video very interesting. I am from Spain and I can confirm that the Kings League has entered with great force, especially thanks to the streamers who have created their teams in this league and who already had a fairly large fan base.
I think this league has served above all to give more visibility to the players of lower categories of Catalan football and some from the rest of Spain.
In my opinion, I think there is nothing wrong with creating a league with the aim of having fun and making people who were getting tired of conventional football re-engage with a more dynamic and "fast food" alternative.
Any idea on where to start watching the King's league if you're not Spanish (so with English streamers or youtube channels for instance)?

Is not replacing football at all. People consuming this are kids who weren’t watching football anyway. Is more linked to video games than the teal game, therefore the audience’s average age

I'm not saying Kings league will ever be bigger than traditional football, but it has been proven that multiple formats of a sport can be big and successful

There used to be a similar (although less circus-esque) competition in the UK with Masters Football. It was very popular initially, with a lot of big-name retired pros playing short six-a-side games. Waned in its later years as they ended up with people nobody had ever heard of playing and small crowds at the venues and sadly got cancelled.
Hopefully Piqué can keep the hype going and not fade away in a similar fashion.
Even better was the Evening Standard London 5 a sides where pro teams entered a 5 a side team for a one night tournament at Wembley Arena

The Bundesliga used to do the same during their winter break. No ideas if they still do though.
@@MichaelGGarry they don't. it was a series of indoor football tournaments with a winners qualifying for the final tournament. it existed from late 80s to early 2000s. it was sanctioned by the german football federation and featured teams of the top 3 leagues (i think), so it actually had lots of bundesliga players involved. i think they stopped it, because the risk of injuries was to high.
I remember seeing that on Sky Sports. Whenever i tuned in Owen Coyle always seemed to dominate.
For me the key is how accesible it is to watch Kings League. In Spain, if you want to watch La Liga you have to pay a lot of money, so obviusly young people that don't have the resources to pay the expensive subscriptions, and the level of football is worse and worse every season, but with Kings League you have a fast pace sport that it a lot of fun to watch

Crazy thing is, some KingsLeague matches have more viewers than most LaLiga matches, because its streamed for free and has some of the biggest spanish speaking streamers as presidents.
Its like having Mr Beast, Ksi, Xqc, etc create and manage their own football team with their communities and watch them hire players, coaches, negotiate salaries, try to steal players from other teams, argue with referees, etc, for free.
Like it or not football is an entertainment medium. There's no reason why there shouldn't be shorter forms of it to appeal to varying audiences. It's fair to prefer longer matches. Most football fans do. But by doing this, he's introducing new audiences to the sport further growing it. People in canada or the us that grew up watching ice hockey will definitely be interested in the kings league
Look at how T20 Cricket had grown over the last couple of decades.
I watch basketball. Watching the NBA. 48 minutes, 4 quarters, and 12 minutes per quarter. I only watch highlights apart from the playoffs where I’m watching full game.
I watch UFC, 3 rounds, 5 minutes per round (15 minutes) and 5 rounds, 5 minutes per round (25 minutes) for championship fights and main events. Depends on which fighter I want to watch.
I watch NFL, not full game but highlights. For super bowl, I’m watching full game.
For boxing, I watch full game depending on which boxer I want to watch.
As for the premier league, I don’t watch full games, only highlights.
So, it seems that I don’t watch games that last more than 1 hour because I prefer to do other things. You can’t blame me. Maybe the sport should change to provide more action.

its more than the matches is the sense of community and high drama not in the pitches and rules but the encounters of these streamers and the way how the communicate or interact is so fresh and sincere and blooming raw intensity

Not really, amateur football can still be entertaining. Amateur boxing on the other hand is not, and no one would watch them if they weren't celebrities in the first place
I've been following the league since the very beginning and it's so much fun. When other European countries get a league Pique said that there will be some sort of "champions league" were the best teams of each country compete. It's going to keep growing and can't wait for all the banter online once the other countries join.
Love the idea. Doesn't appeal to me particularly but a clear niche its filling and shows it can draw a crowd. Hope it continues to expand

This sounds a lot like early 1980s MISL when indoor soccer was just getting started and was a wild thing. The biggest exception is that the Kings League has more sponsorship backing than the MISL ever did, which is part of the reason why the league folded and has gone through 8 different iterations of a top league. Would love to see a MASL-Kings League crossover event like the 1981 Trans-Atlantic challenge between the Baltimore Blast and Sheffield Wednesday, which Eric Cantona played in. Or when the Philadelphia Atoms played vs. The USSR at the Spectrum.

Daang - I always wondered why there wasn't more experimental takes on the game, Testing whats rules etc would make for the most fun game.
We also have the same thing in Russia, called Winline Media Football League. It's 11×11 competition with experimental rules (Wenger offside, "clear" time - the clock running only when the ball is in game, and many others). The teams either have famous people in squad or in management. Nowadays teams have more professional squads, some of them are even presented in Russian cup and went through 2-3 stages.
It's similar to what they've done with Cricket, turned it into a short version of the regular game. T20 cricket (20 Overs per team) compared to the regular 50 Overs. Massively popular and more entertaining for a younger audience, also made it a more family friendly event. It also has the effect of having 'near-retired/ex pro' players playing in the shortform as its less taxing on the body in T20, would be similar again for this King's League.
I think the "regular" cricket is actually 3, 4 or 5 days not 50 0vers. Other vthan that, good point.

I love this is a fun approach to football, and I actually think 7v7 might be more fun to watch that the traditional 11v11.

This has been done before. The first XFL in the early 2000s, Arena FL, Big3, etc. I doubt this will last but it seems fun.
Those are totally different sports that have absolutely nowhere near as much worldwide appeal as football. This is totally different.

This is interesting, but it also feels a bit Slamball-y. Like it'll have it's hype, it's peak, then eventually- it's niche. I don't think this will ever get too huge, this one is more for FIFA nerds than Football nerds. Only a real football nerd can appreciate the beauty of a well-fought 0-0.

I don't really agree with people comparing this to the IPL, I think a more apt comparison would be if there was a popular 5-a-side leage or something to that effect, rather than this format with its novelty elements, which the IPL doesn't have

I think this league is more popular because of all the things around it than the football itself. I'd rather focussing on changing the core of the game to create more entertainment than doing all sorts of funky stuff trying to create a entertaining product. Why not experiment with things like pure playing time or creating a different league format.

I kinda hate the idea of it but I fully accept it's not designed for me. I accept I'm old and just love purist football. As long as both can exist side by side I've no problem with that.

Well, yes. In the german bundesliga, i think, most watch it, because they are emotional attached to their home team and not for the excitement of the game.

I'm from Spain and the feeling is that they are losing all the freshness, they have a bad strategy because of their crazy ego, I think it will fail for these reasons:
-Saturation: They are creating so much content instead of focusing on quality, this can make people get tired.
-Audience and Mistargeting: It's clear that they are targeting youngsters who watch Twitch, but with the same content again and again, but this segment is not there forever. They should target also millenials but the problem is in the next point.
-Twitch ratkids presidents: I think this destroys all the fun, the presidents are just rich ego inflated kids, with a lot of money, overstimulated (not pun intended, maybe is just Monster drink) and 0 carisma to attract older millenials. Would be great that all of them were actual football players or even former managers. Instead we have disappointing content based on uninteresting twitch streamers.
-Media focus on presidents rather than the football players: Again this will make it more entertaining, but the focus is just on the presidents, so there is no motivation to watch the actual game, only if you are a 13 years old kid that enjoys some despicable characters such as Grefg to scream like crazy. In the WWE, the focus where the wrestlers, so if this is a circus, then the main characters should be the gladiators.
It takes balls to build this and I am impressed, but I think Piqué has a bad entourage or maybe should stay away a bit from these twitch characters because soon or later, they will make this competition forgettable.
I disagree it, was intentionally made with that niche audience in mind, and the twitch streamers will always have their own audience supporting them.The fact that the matches are so short makes it very popular with younger generations that have no attention span. My little brother watches the league all the time. I sometimes watch it with him for a few minutes, the double goal rule in the last 3 minutes makes the game very entertaining, you often get to see insane comebacks. The rest of what you said its pretty much inevitable, as its amateur football in the end.
Sure this fun for a bit. Ultimately (I would have thought) the main joy of football is its simplicity.
Imagine if the Ucl or the World Cup allowed full access streaming, people would be getting tens of millions of views per video at the sane time.

There is a big BIG mistake... This league was cofounded with Ibai Llanos, three times winner to streamer of the Year (2020,2021,2022). Also you wrote down his name as Ibai Plains... When Llanos is his surname, surnames don't get translated.. All the top 5 most watch videos in Twitch are his. He has all the records, you should know his name...

Its a novelty that will have its time in the sun but won't last. There is a reason the game never changes.

- if a team in possession moves the ball backwards, spot foul free kick for opponents
- if a shot misses the net the opposing team gets a free kick at midfield
- all throw-ins must be directed at the box / long throws
- substitutes can happened on the fly though substituted player must leave pitch entirely before replacement enters game
- all handballs in the box are penalties
- a players entire body must be ahead of an opposing player to be deemed offside
- new card system, yellow for first offence, orange for second, red for third
- more fouls/cards for suspected player diving and overselling

It is phenomenal. I love watching it. I consider it something different to football, though. I see a lot of angry people here in Spain, and I don't understand why. You can love both football and the Kings League.

This reminds me of cricket. Traditionally, an official match was played over 5 days! imagine playing for 7-8 hours per day for 5 days and then no one wins!
So cricket created a one-day format which became very popular and became a proper format of its own. Then even one day was too long for many people, so they created a shortened format called twenty20 (twenty twenty), which is just an evening game).
People want fast entertainment nowadays. Even pop songs are getting shorter!

I've seen pearl clutching criticism along the lines of "but it's not football" from people who would, in all probability if asked, call having a kick about with their mates "a game of football".
