It's funny sometimes when you hear other artists cover what was originally a fluffy pop song and then you realize that our preconceptions sometimes inhibit our ability to see how good the song writting sometimes is in those fluffy pop songs. Real music fans can acknowledge this. Pretentious music snobs will simply sit back and hate on the original claiming this is what true music sounds like while never acknowledging the fact the song originated elsewhere and without it this version would ever exist. You can see the two types of people in the comment sections.

I love Katy Perry, I think she has a fantastic voice and generally I'm a big fan of her music. But this is just on a whole different level, Brian Fallon brings so much emotion to every song he performs and the arrangement is very clever. His generations answer to Tom Waits.
