Just a note about the 118i on test here. Base price is £27,000. this car had over £10k of options ! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE...ua-cam.com/users/petrolped
Petrol Ped this car cost much less to make then previous generation, however it is still much more expensive then the equivalent previous generation rwd, why?
It's obvious it's been enhanced with the M packet :) Any rumours on a more powerful engine coming into the petrol lineup at a later stage? I feel like there's a huge gap between 118i and the M135i, surely there's enough space for a 200-225bhp option, which I would find ideal.
As someone who has had a m140i now for more than two years and living in the UK I can honestly say on days as your driving in and we get a lots of 'rain' I can't wait to get m135i. The m140i is fun on dry open roads but when do we get chance? On wet cold roads the m140i is about safety first, infact you might as well be driving a Fiesta rather than a hot hatch. I need a car thats fun but equally I need to get about on those wet days that challenged the m140i, so I've ordered a m135i with a few extras. Great review by the way
I have to admit I really wasn’t a fan of these at first but the car has really grown on me over the couple of months really nice to see a review that not comparing it to the old car and just testing it for what it actually is
As usual Petrol Ped gives an honest, straight talking review , and to be honest the only review I've seen of the BMW135i that hasn't mentioned the old BMW140i, which is so refreshing. Cheers
Who needs RWD? Anyone who likes the fact that the front wheels are in the business of steering, while the back wheels provides power. Which again gives you absolute control.
This car isn't a patch on the M140i & if you haven't driven 1 please do !!! Pete drives round a roundabout & the front wheels are already slipping 🤔 Pete says about running through its paces & yet I heard once the acceleration being put down 🤔 the engine isn't as quick 🤔 the gearbox is worse 🤔 the car looks like a tourer 2 series & let's be frank only mum's buy them 🤔 honestly you tell or show me 1 person who would sell there *M140i* for the *New1* 🤔 I bet it's nobody !!!
I drive daily mountain streets and I have experience with many different cars, for having fun allroad or RWD is the minimum for cars over 150 horsepower. Even on snow RWD beats FWD if you aren't afraid of some sliding. But I'm more disappointed about the look of the new series 1. For me it looks like a toy for rich kids, somehow a crazy disharmony and that grill is completely a disaster. The F20/21 has a lovely intriguing character, and obviously the technology of the 3 series.
Problem is 97% of 1 series drivers drive none M-lite cars 118i, 120d 118ds etc. Those folks don't give a shit about RWD they just want a car that gets them from A to B. I have a 2016 M135i and love it more than i love my dog but in the middle of winter without even any ice on the road traction from a standing start is zero most people (my misses for a start) find that shit annoying.
Coming from years of Audi/VW, this was actually the first BMW I considered buying when I saw it, especially because of the FWD, but also due to fresh design, more space, modern infotainment systems, exterior way more aggressive than Audi or MB can ever offer with the same price. HATERS GONNA HATE FWD, but then again, haters should think this from the perspective of BMW's business. The only people that will be really upset about FWD are those who own an F20 M135 or M140, but they are not a very large group when considering all potential buyers. That is very unfortunate. I would guess majority of them will stick with their current car, but some of them will upgrade to F40 anyways. If I recall correctly, there was a poll for 1-series owners where 90%(?) of them didn't even know whether their current car is FWD or RWD. Those people *do not care*, and they will love the new model. And now, BMW has immediately got a new customer from VW, and I can guarantee I am not the only one. Can't wait to get my new 118d M-sport :)
Speak for yourself, this model from bmw is so ugly. Im a VW Golf 7 GTI clubsport driver, and i am waiting for the Golf 8R. The specs of this bmw are good but the looks....
I ordered the 118i m sport for these exact reasons. Even cancelled an A3 order after test driving the Bimmer because of how fun it felt to drive. I don’t think it’s lost it’s USP, and as an Audi owner I thought it delivered a much more premium package with a more rewarding drive. Never owned a BMW before but I’m excited to get my hands on this one!
Just traded my 15 plate 1 series in for an m135i x drive. The car is brilliant. I have it in black with 19inch alloys. Looks really classy. And its fast. Very fast. My last really quick car was a wrx pro drive subaru. This blitzes it EASY.
Great video. Totally agree re the rear wheel drive thing. Only makes a difference in situations you don’t want to find yourself in on a public road. I’ve always avoided the M140i because of the rear wheel drive only option. On greasy or icy roads you need a spare pair of trousers. So the only options before were a Golf R or an S3.... Both feeling a bit dated. M135i duly ordered.
Great video! This video has convinced me that for the 'standard' models (118i, etc) FWD is, for the most part, OK and 'is what it is'. The only thing I don't think was mentioned at all, was the removal of that legendary six-cylinder unit for the M135/40. This is nothing less than a huge shame and I still believe the engine suits the Mini more than the new 135. Oh, and on a small side note, I almost spit out my tea when you said £36,000ish for that 118i - extra's or not, that's outrageous!
This is why your channel is so good Pete. Completely un-biased review especially when comparing it to the JCW. Great content mate , can't wait for more. All the best Gus
Just bought a 118i here in Oz, first BMW so your review makes me feel we made the right choice. Cheers and a really good review which was super helpful.
I own the previous generation 1 series i have had no problems whatsoever with it it has been an excellent car , it is at the end of the pcp that i took out on it so it is going back . I have done my research on this 1 series and i like it so i have ordered one ! Yep i know on buying a car you normally look at in the flesh give it a test drive and make a decision but because i ordered it 2 months ago none were in the country , but i honestly believe those clever people at BMW have made the 1 series even better . I have been told my car has been built and is at the port ready for shipment ( 8 days ago ) it is only the 1.8i m sport but your review has reinforced my belief i made a good decision.
Former 125d, current m235i owner here. I've driven the 135i (the local dealer is very good to me) and trust me its a much better all round car than its predecessor, I doubt you will be disappointed.
I have the 118i, bmw wouldn’t let me tinker with the m sport pack so decided not to add it but did add the upgraded interior dials, much better than the standard ones, I’m more than happy with the car, great for around town and nippy enough
With you every single way on this car Pete , I think i've said before BMW have done wonders for the better, The new 1 series is a true contender and will come out top every time .. !! Great Video Pete
@@PetrolPed BMW have come so far with the design of the new 1 series and the new FWD system is no exception, The new 1 series will be a class leader for others to follow .. I'm hoping now to persuade Mercedes customers away from their ageing 'A' Class into the conservative segment market.
The one thing I was disappointed with the Mini JCW Clubman was the fact it didn't have a digital dash. Simple enough to do. BMW does it with the 1 Series which is sort of an equivalent. I know they're different cars, but I still miss my old 330d coupe :-((... Great video Pete with a great little performer. Shame about the weather :-))...
The lack of RWD drive is not what's putting me off, its the fact that you would have to park it face in all the time. Only a face it's mother could love.
You floored me when you said £37k for a 118i. I had to rewind to see it again as I thought it must be £27k fully specced. A 718 Cayman starts at £44k....
@@georgewhiteford9869 They are, but have you also noticed that the engine capacity is also being shrank on these too? AMG 6.2 now superceded by a twin turbo 4.0. Porsche have been steadily downsizing their range of cars too. Has this completely passed you by? The 1 Series is not a performance car, its an bottom of rung BMW.
Nothing wrong with front wheel drive. I love my FK8. My problem with cars these days, is why the interior colour choice in cars is so mundane. Black,Grey more black and grey. would be so much better if manufacturers, gave us more choice of colour.
Im with you on this, think its a great looking car and the M135i has it all. Oh love the camera angle from behind your right ear, great drivers eye view.......nice one
First car I ever drove ( when it was brand new ) was the phenomally fast Jaguar Mk 2 ,3.8. The car beloved of 1960s gangsters. O - 60. in 8.5 seconds. Today's BMW 118ti. 0 - 60 in 8.2 seconds.
Good evening pal. The TFT dash looks the part. Although the 118 is a lovely lil car, I would tend to go for the 135. Surprised about the rear seat room. Quite deceitful. I do love a 3cyl growl. As you say, for general pootling, the chief drivetrain don’t really kick in unless you are pushing on, not a threat to a 118. Defo liking 135. Mini will ALWAYS have a characteristic ‘go cart’ drive feel, which all of us that have driven one, totally crave. They are a totally different vehicle. The all wheel drive always wins with our general weather conditions. It’s horses for courses. Defo a nice couple of cars that you have reviewed here. Thankyou.
After 3 Minis I bought a M135i. It is for me the much better package than a Mini JCW by far and somwhere inbetween the Hatch and the Clubman. But I will keep my JCW Roadster for sure :-)
Much as i love the old classics i grew up with, i have to say, modern cars are just so damn good. Im hoping we dont have to bin all petrol cars just yet, as theres too many cracking machines available.
For a daily driver FWD makes perfect sense. For destroying the laws of physics you need 4WD. If driving for fun on the twisties it can only be RWD. Nice real world review of the 118. You reviewed it in the context of how 99.9% of owners will drive it
I started watching this being mightily impressed with the 118i. Until I discover all the fancy stuff is optional extras. 37k for a car of this type is insane. Many other manufacturers include similar features as standard. Especially when the all singing all dancing version is only 6k more. Oh and that front grill design is rancid. Maybe if you specced one in black with black grilles it'd look less silly. Also I can't get out of my head that it looks like an suv crossover thing on lowered suspension.
Great video as usual. Looking at comments below I'd agree. I've got to say BMW are extracting the Michael, even with £15k of extras. I'm sure it's very lovely but take the tinsel away and you've got a 3 cylinder 1.5l 150 brake horse small family car. There's a lot better value out there folks.
Great video . That’s not my issue though it’s the fact They’ve down graded the car in terms of looks and performance but more importantly sound . The New M135i sounds Like a normal family car.
I’ve not driven a sporty rwd BMW but tbey are usually filmed sliding in the snow. M135 or clubman with snowtyres would seem great here in France / Italy where snowtyres are mandatory
With all the controversy that has been created around this car, it is interesting to know a sincere and objective opinion. The car is going well, as it seems with controversy or without it. I really appreciate the style of the video. For me, it is a bit expensive, maybe in the years to come...
Petrol Ped Didn’t like it Pete the interior and tech is fantastic but the way it drove it seems you had to work it hard to get it to move along.... in my opinion the S3 drives and handles much better then the M135i.... The Audi suits my driving characteristics..nice but not for me... Really looking forward to the new A3/S3 when it finally arrives..
I do wish BMW hadn’t stuck M badges on everything and it’s dog, it’s devalued what a real M car is. Looks a good car and so it should be for the price. The front grill seems to be getting bigger with each model.
Loving your intro... I personally think you should think about more cinematic intro filming. You needn’t say much about those cars as the smile on your face told a thousand words. Excellent review. Looking forward to the Peugeot review.
Thank you for the great review I’m thinking of buying one for my wife Love BMW and this looks a great all rounder I like the look it’s understated with power when you want it Thank you
Excellent review Ped. I have to say this is the first version of the 1 series that I actually like and genuinely would consider when my car is up for replacement. Peace and respect, Ben
@@PetrolPed Very welcome Ped, you may remember years ago when the 1 series came out Jeremy Clarkson said that from the front it looked like Fu Man Chu, and from the side it looked like a van. That summed it up for me. This new is so much better great to see the interior is now up to speed with Audi and Mercedes too. I know the enlarged kidney grills are marmite but they work on this car and I do think in time the looks will grow on people. No one has yet done a side by side review with the old one. That will seal the deal on this new one. Keep up the fabulous channel content and you drive safe too 😎
Honestly, in daily driving and the odd trips with RWD C-Class estates and RWD biased X-Drive 335d estates, going back to FWD was definitely noticeable. FWD is fine but RWD/AWD nicer to drive for sure. But factor-in load space in smaller cars, cost of car itself as well as cost of fuel then compromises are made. And for BMW it's obviously more cost effective to build most of it's more "affordable" popular class of cars based on the same platform with engines that can conform better to pollution regulations. Anyway, Ped, the most important question is: which colour the blue or the red or something else??
These car seemed to be based off of the Minis. The engine are the same size with the same power. It is smart on BMW making two separate cars on the same platform.
Rodney Betz no it’s not it’s cheap bmws are rwd and driver oriented unlike a average hatchback like this ugly thing and who pays 37 grand for a poverty power 1.5 engine bmw might as well buy a focus/astra/vw golf and get more for you money
The 1.5 is the same as the base model Mini that is around 20k and I agree that paying 37k for that is a bit much. The 2.0 is the same engine that is in the Mini Coopers S and JCW and they run from 35k to 44k. (US dollars)
Petrol Ped yes I suppose that any press car will be high spec but they will be a base 1 series will be about the the same price as a Mid spec astra or focus which most people can afford to run unlike the pcp crowd which lease a flash car then cannot afford to maintain it
This m140 thing I don’t get it the oar is a 10 year old design and people need to move on, just look in autotrader at how many 140’s are on the insurance register. I’m in the accident repair trade and see loads of older 135 and 140 models been in ditches and have side and rear damage due to being spun. Just ordered me a new M135i love the car, just get a insurance quote on the new car compared to the older 140 there good reason why the older model is more expensive.
Hopefully be a 120i with around 200-250bhp like the Golf GTI, might make more sense than the M135i, especially if the performance is similar to the MINI Hatch JCW
Hi Ped Very interesting review of both cars, well done.👍👍Looking back in time I always considered the BMW approach to the superior driving experience of RWD somewhat arrogant, how times have changed with FWD & XDrive. Aplologies to all BMW fans from an Audi driver😏
Evening Peter I know you were struggling to find something you didn't like about the 1 series, you just had to get out of the car stand about ten paces away and look at the car and think it does look similar to an A35/A45 Mercedes, that's what I thought anyway. Regards Simon
One thing that is odd when specking the M135i online, you can't have 19" wheels with the adaptive suspension, only the 18's. It looks so much better with the 19's. Bit of a deal breaker. I have a 19 plate M140i and I like this M135i, I miss the AWD traction I had in my Golf R. RWD is fun I guess but when the rear does break loose it can be a bit unnerving, keeps you on your toes. Always feel in control though, maybe partly down to the Michelin PSS tires. You should have a go in a M140i, the engine is the star really. Such a powerhouse in a small car, almost feels wrong, like it should be in a 7 series (I think it might be in the 740i).
@@PetrolPed Very strange. You'd think that having the 19" wheels would require adaptive suspension given the lower profile tires, this is from the M135i configurator - Adaptive Suspension The Adaptive suspension makes it possible to adjust the damper characteristics to suit your driving situation and combines ride comfort and driving dynamics with the best possible safety. In this way, you have the option of adjusting the damper response to suit your individual needs, further optimising driving dynamics. Along with the standard Comfort setting, Sport mode is also available in which the shock absorbers are tightened to support an athletic, dynamic driving style. The settings are selected via the Drive Performance Control switch in the centre console. Not available with 19" alloy wheels.
I always enjoy your videos but I wouldn’t expect a mini fan to object to FWD, my 2018 140i gives me huge level of fun on the road and I can make the back end twitch out of line easily and with a big grin on my face, my next car will be a M2, thank god BMW haven’t complete sold out to true BMW fans 😄
Steven Rotherforth Agree, and in this case they can't possibly claim that emissions are the reason when the fuel consumption is the same as the 3.0 straight six!
The issue with drive configuration isn't that it's AWD in place of RWD, it's that the AWD in question isn't even rear-biased. It apparently only supplies up to 50% maximum torque to the rear wheels. How many performance AWD cars don't have a rear-biased setup? It's such a compromise. Years ago I had an Escort RS2000 4x4, that was transverse engined with 60% of the power permanently to the rear. There's no technical reason it can't be done, they could even make it fully RWD with the transverse engine if they wanted to! Best of both worlds, better packaging, same driving experience. The fact that this new car has perfect traction is not a bonus - the old one did too, if you didn't turn off the traction control - it's all achieved electronically. The difference with the new one is that you probably can't have a bit of fun if you want to - may as well buy a VW or an Audi.
Possibly the most dramatic intro to a car review I've ever seen! Still not sure about the front grill though, I still think with the loss of RWD and the flat-6 would lead me to look at a JCW - looks better and probably more fun. Great video as always!
I have driven the 140 and owned a lot more powerful cars the new 135 is a better car so much so I ordered one I like the look and company's like motec have allready started developing stuff for them springs styling kits ect people will grow to love this car and bmw will launch a hot version soon they always do return of the M1
Lovely 😊 review flower 💐. I must admit though, I had a problem with a front wheel drive BMW. Having said that we have just ordered a BMW 220M GT. I don’t mind a front drive under certain conditions, there are just as much fun on the road, driving within the legal limits. Now I’m only happy 😃 about this because I’ve no intention of talking it on a track. It has a job to do and that’s driving from Kent to Derbyshire a few times a year. Any hu, keep up the great work me darling but, WHERES THE MINI? (Sorry I’m Mini mad lol) 💋
I'm very surprised that you never drove the RWD 1 Series as it was around for many years in all sorts of versions. I owned a 130i in 2005 and on a smooth road (not many of those in Australia!) it was a hoot to drive with that in-line 6 but most times it was uncomfortable with many squeaks and groans coming from the interior trim, not helped by the standard sports suspension. The new one looks good on the showroom floor with a quality look but not too sure about the dual clutch gearbox combined with the 3 cylinder motor. Yet to drive one, so cannot really comment objectively.
That grill 😟I am in the market for a car like this . Amazing deals on A Class Mercs. Like £ thousands off newly reg cars.Makes this car very very expensive .Will wait to see the Mk8 Golf though as I love my Mk7 Gti and it’s still bloody good after all these years.Your reviews are really good . In a different league to Car Wow
Will probably grow on people in the end , but do prefer the older shape I'm afraid!!! My 440bhp M135i lci will be with me for a few years yet 👍 nice video as always.
Hi. Enjoyed the review 118i . What was your thoughts on the drivers side wind noise or the tyre road noise? As I drive a audi a3 2018 sportsback at the moment and thing of a upgrade to a new shape 1 series. Thanks
I just can’t get passed the design. It seems to be getting pretty favourable reviews, but its so generic looking. The Focus, A Class, this etc all blend into one. Not only that, but it looks too tall; like the love child of a 2 Series Active Tourer and an X2. Yuck. It’s lot it’s USP for me. The B58 / ZF8 is a fab combination which as CarWow showed, is faster and more responsive. None of my rear wheel drive cars have killed me yet. Yes the hips can wiggle a bit and they don’t like the throttle being treated like an on/off switch, but they’re not the death traps some think. New seats look good though. BMW’s digital dash doesn’t look as good as that of Audi. My M140i will be staying put. I don’t think the handling is quite as bad as the internet makes out; I’ve certainly been happy with mine to date.
Totally agree - the old 135 / 140s are perfectly safe when you want them to be, the electronics absolutely make sure of that. Everyone who thinks otherwise should be made to watch Joe Achilles' video where he floors the accelerator on his M135i coming out of roundabouts, and the car just won't go until it can get good enough grip.
Pete. All points taken buddy. But dealing with the looks first. From almost every angle, it looks like a squashed down 2 series Grand Tourer. 😬 Then secondly. Do me one small favour. Ask StefAtb what he thinks, then try a test drive of a late M140i. Just compare them back to back for a couple of days and then you'll get it. In 2004 BMW gave the world the only ever rear wheel drive hatchback. That'll never happen again. Even the 2 litre diesel cars were fun with that crazy torque curve. I'm happy to be with the old fashioned traditionalists on this one mate. Sorry. Nice car for sure, but they've done it to keep up with Mercedes, Audi, and the others buddy. Its lost its individuality for me. Sorry mate.
I've just taken delivery of a 220D XDrive luxury line 2 series active tourer and it's brilliant! LOTS of space, turns into a spacious van, pure luxury and a smaller car than my old Q3! Don't knock it, try it!
Paul Lockwood agree with all of that - except that the Capri mk2/3 was a rear drive hatchback! Not to mention various Sierras including the XR4i, Cosworth... Actually the first gen 1-series felt a lot more rear drive than the current one, the 120d was an absolute hoot to drive.
Sad that you are so prejudiced and lost out on being educated in what is lying ahead in the future. Stop longing for the past and accept the inevitable dramatic change that is coming to the auto world!
Agree on the styling being a little bland and the spec bit voice over was like watching a BM advert maybe another gig for Mr Ped ?? Come on BMW give him a chance !! Agree more smiles and giggles from the JCW review and 5 grand is 5 grand mate !! 😎👍🏻🇨🇦
“Are there really people in day to day driving that can feel the difference between FWD and AWD?” Yes mate absolutely Drove the 135 yesterday and the traction isn’t as good as my 120 x drive, suffered horribly from torque steer too
I thought the new 1 series has a similar profile and rear end that that of the new Ford Focus😳. I wonder how the JCW would go in a head to head with the M135i?
I'm liking the new 1 series. The M135i actually looks great and has decent sized exhaust pipes unlike its predecessor! The old M135i one doesn't really look special enough in my opinion.
irelmo69 are you blind the old 135 was proper wheel drive ie rwd and had a brilliant 6 pot engine unlike this thing which isn’t even a bmw it’s a mini with a ugly body kit the only thing it’s good for is the fleet market as all junior reps will love it while everyone else laughs at them in their poverty bmw
irelmo69 how does it look better it’s a ugly duckling where I work had a the proper 130 in today and it looked purposeful and sporty unlike the new 135 which looks like smaller 2 series active tourer .Now bmw produce two ugly pointless cars what next a fwd 5 series with a tiny engine and massive grills
Great review as always 👍 On a different note given your Audi connections can you try and get a new A6 Allroad. As well as all the usual review stuff and benefits over the standard estate can you please test the reliability of the WIRELESS CarPlay with your new phone. Thanks
I thought the M135i X drive system was front wheel bias in that it’s front wheel drive until the X drive is needed but then it’s 60% front and 40% rear maximum?
Great video Mr Ped! Do you think the 118i would feel as premium with a lot less options ticked? Can’t imagine many people will spec one even close to £37k. Personally I like the look of the new 1 series, although I’d probably tweak a few things if I were designing it. At the moment I feel like the new M135i xdrive is competing in a different series of car now than the M140i... Do you think there will be a more powerful 1 series coming to rival the A45s and RS3??
I’d love to know wich you would pick between this and the Clubman. I’m trying to decide between them myself, but I haven’t driven either! Help, please.
@@PetrolPed JCW still an unknown driving experience yet for you Peter, will Mr P P and the 2 pooches fit in it? They would I believe in a Golf GTI TCR ? Who needs RWD? Anyone who likes the fact that the front wheels are in the business of steering, while the back wheels provides power.
Which again gives you absolute control.

I really liked the car when we had it on Saturday , felt very grown up and like a small 3 series. Very enjoyable video yet again
Cheers Bud 👍
I’ve now got a 21 plate with all the toys and I love it
How is your bank account doing?
Great video. Totally agree re the rear wheel drive thing. Only makes a difference in situations you don’t want to find yourself in on a public road. I’ve always avoided the M140i because of the rear wheel drive only option. On greasy or icy roads you need a spare pair of trousers. So the only options before were a Golf R or an S3.... Both feeling a bit dated. M135i duly ordered.
Wow...enjoy the new wheels when they arrive 👍
Wow! Fantastic video! I seen the new 1 Series at my local BMW dealership yesterday; it looked stunning
Cheers Ron 👍
Great video! This video has convinced me that for the 'standard' models (118i, etc) FWD is, for the most part, OK and 'is what it is'. The only thing I don't think was mentioned at all, was the removal of that legendary six-cylinder unit for the M135/40. This is nothing less than a huge shame and I still believe the engine suits the Mini more than the new 135. Oh, and on a small side note, I almost spit out my tea when you said £36,000ish for that 118i - extra's or not, that's outrageous!
The 118 needs to be driven to be believed 👍
This is why your channel is so good Pete. Completely un-biased review especially when comparing it to the JCW. Great content mate , can't wait for more. All the best Gus
Thanks Gus, kind of you to say 👍
Just bought a 118i here in Oz, first BMW so your review makes me feel we made the right choice. Cheers and a really good review which was super helpful.
How’s the car so far? And what year is it
I own the previous generation 1 series i have had no problems whatsoever with it it has been an excellent car , it is at the end of the pcp that i took out on it so it is going back .

Sounds great 👍
With you every single way on this car Pete , I think i've said before BMW have done wonders for the better, The new 1 series is a true contender and will come out top every time .. !! Great Video Pete
Such a good car to drive 👍
@@PetrolPed I drove that new 118i this morning Pete and YES, A stunning drive !👍
@@ScenesThroughTravels It can't possibly be any good...it's rear wheel drive
The GP has a digital dash thankfully 😜😂
The lack of RWD drive is not what's putting me off, its the fact that you would have to park it face in all the time. Only a face it's mother could love.
Thats why your mother loves you
You floored me when you said £37k for a 118i. I had to rewind to see it again as I thought it must be £27k fully specced. A 718 Cayman starts at £44k....
£15k of options 😮
37K for a measly 1.5 litre car. Really?
@@georgewhiteford9869 The days of paying for capacity are over.
Zerofightervi so why are car manufacturers still producing high performance cars?
Not used it before but it worked well so you'll see that one again 😜😂
Looks good, but I seriously think a JCW looks a little cooler and has more Petrol Ped smiles per miles 👍👍👍👍👍👍
More smiles per mile for sure 👍
£37500 for a 118i. Brought a 140i with two years BMW warranty for less than £20000. Do the maths
Thankyou.
Cheers Bud 👍
Brilliant review Pete ! I’ve seen it twice already, and just as enjoyable to watch! Cheers, Tom.
Aweeome 👍
The intro! Something out of the Avengers. Pedders Assemble!!! :)
LOL 😂
I was thinking (and would have commented) exactly the same thing! Haha.
There are many bad cars these days 👍
@@PetrolPed Which is the worst car today you think?
It's the rear wheel drive combined with the 6 cylinder engine that most people will miss. Still like it though, it's growing on me. Good review Ped👍
Cheers James. I think people need to give it a chance 👍
For a daily driver FWD makes perfect sense. For destroying the laws of physics you need 4WD. If driving for fun on the twisties it can only be RWD. Nice real world review of the 118. You reviewed it in the context of how 99.9% of owners will drive it
Cheers John 👍
I started watching this being mightily impressed with the 118i. Until I discover all the fancy stuff is optional extras. 37k for a car of this type is insane. Many other manufacturers include similar features as standard. Especially when the all singing all dancing version is only 6k more.
Oh and that front grill design is rancid. Maybe if you specced one in black with black grilles it'd look less silly.
Also I can't get out of my head that it looks like an suv crossover thing on lowered suspension.
The looks grow on you for sure 👍
New Focus st looks like a bargain now compared to 118i 😂😂😂
Epic slow mo walk through 😂
That 118i looks nothing like a one series, radical design overhaul
Full dramatic 😂
@@PetrolPed i have the old 118i rear wheel drive- the styling is better IMO.
So many cars are having their sounded deadened nowadays due to emission regs 😪
I’ve not driven a sporty rwd BMW but tbey are usually filmed sliding in the snow. M135 or clubman with snowtyres would seem great here in France / Italy where snowtyres are mandatory
Yep 👍
With all the controversy that has been created around this car, it is interesting to know a sincere and objective opinion. The car is going well, as it seems with controversy or without it. I really appreciate the style of the video. For me, it is a bit expensive, maybe in the years to come...
Thank Jose 👍
Laminated side glass with protective film, it’s about the only optional extra the car need.
I’m considering replacing my 2018 Audi S3 with the M35i looks fantastic inside. Test drive book in for Tomorrow, looking forward to it

Didn’t like it Pete the interior and tech is fantastic but the way it drove it seems you had to work it hard to get it to move along.... in my opinion the S3 drives and handles much better then the M135i....
Those grills are growing 😂
Loving your intro... I personally think you should think about more cinematic intro filming. You needn’t say much about those cars as the smile on your face told a thousand words. Excellent review. Looking forward to the Peugeot review.

Keep up the fabulous channel content and you drive safe too 😎
PP I had a 120d rear drive and it felt special. Go borrow an M140i and then redrive the new car 😘
I might just do that 👍
Honestly, in daily driving and the odd trips with RWD C-Class estates and RWD biased X-Drive 335d estates, going back to FWD was definitely noticeable.
It’s like they did not know where to go with grill. “Should we make it wide or long or both?”
really enjoying your reviews. subscribed a few days ago. your love of cars really translates
Oh wow thanks you. So glad you are enjoying the channel. I do love my cars 😜
Nice review, the cars look really nice, 37k for the 118i though - wow!
£15k of options 😬
It is more than just this and the Clubman that share the same platform 👍
Sure, the 118 on test was over specced but drive one before you know the engine or driving feel. You might be surprised 😜
Petrol Ped yes I suppose that any press car will be high spec but they will be a base 1 series will be about the the same price as a Mid spec astra or focus which most people can afford to run unlike the pcp crowd which lease a flash car then cannot afford to maintain it
Interesting and informative, a really good presentation as always
Cheers Alex 👍
Just heard the price 😯....that could be a problem!
Very interesting Nigel. They certainly have the potential to catch out the less experienced driver 😬
Hopefully be a 120i with around 200-250bhp like the Golf GTI, might make more sense than the M135i, especially if the performance is similar to the MINI Hatch JCW
Hi Ped
Very interesting review of both cars, well done.👍👍Looking back in time I always considered the BMW approach to the superior driving experience of RWD somewhat arrogant, how times have changed with FWD & XDrive. Aplologies to all BMW fans from an Audi driver😏
LOL...don't worry, I'll take the flack for you 😂
Evening Peter I know you were struggling to find something you didn't like about the 1 series, you just had to get out of the car stand about ten paces away and look at the car and think it does look similar to an A35/A45 Mercedes, that's what I thought anyway. Regards Simon
The 118i seats look really nice and you rate them highly - wait, they're the same as the Active & Gran Tourers, X1 and X2...
Not sure why that would be 🤔
@@PetrolPed Very strange. You'd think that having the 19" wheels would require adaptive suspension given the lower profile tires, this is from the M135i configurator -
Adaptive Suspension
The Adaptive suspension makes it possible to adjust the damper characteristics to suit your driving situation and combines ride comfort and driving dynamics with the best possible safety.
@@step0601 Think the 19" alloys are in the M Performance Accessory catalogue and dealer fit only
The new M235i GC has exactly the same issue.
Just ordered mine with 19s as part of the M235 Plus Pack but wished I could of had option of Adaptive.
I can appreciate both, I used to own a Caterham ;-) Honestly though, this is a car that needs to be driven before you make your mind up
When you drive a F20 Xdrive you can still feel the RWD.

WOW...thank you 👏
Thanks Justin. Kinda of you to say 🙏
Thanks petrol ped for another good video👍
My pleasure 👍
You turned that around quickly!! Good to catch up 👍🏻
I did indeed. Great seeing you mate. Hopefully work together one day soon 👍
I have no problems with 4WD.
Rear biased 4WD would be nice.
It’s the lack of the wonderful B58 3 litre straight six that’s the problem.😓
Sadly the way the world is going 😥
Thats only a problem for the 3% of 1 series owners who currently drive an M135/M140i.
I went for it on this one 😜😂
Looks nice Pete, I have an X1 m sport for company use love it, but the mini Is a bigger winner for me f56 cooper diesel, love your videos.

You will be please soon then...Mini news on it's way 👍
Petrol Ped sweet 💋
That’s a nice lowered X2 you’ve got there.
The 118 drives beautifully 👌
I’ve ordered an M135 for Dec delivery and a work friend picks up his 118i tomorrow. I’m downsizing from an M5 though....

Hi. Enjoyed the review 118i . What was your thoughts on the drivers side wind noise or the tyre road noise?
As I drive a audi a3 2018 sportsback at the moment and thing of a upgrade to a new shape 1 series.
Thanks
The back looks like a new Focus.
I've owned 30 FWD car's owned 1 RWD&1 Xdrive. I'd go for Xdrive!
Most people thought the F20 looked like a clown shoe, I still do.
Pete. All points taken buddy.
But dealing with the looks first.
From almost every angle, it looks like a squashed down 2 series Grand Tourer. 😬
Then secondly.
Sorry mate.
I will be trying to get a drove in an M140 👍
I've just taken delivery of a 220D XDrive luxury line 2 series active tourer and it's brilliant! LOTS of space, turns into a spacious van, pure luxury and a smaller car than my old Q3! Don't knock it, try it!
Paul Lockwood agree with all of that - except that the Capri mk2/3 was a rear drive hatchback! Not to mention various Sierras including the XR4i, Cosworth...
Actually the first gen 1-series felt a lot more rear drive than the current one, the 120d was an absolute hoot to drive.
@@dungareesareforfools Agreed. I still have an Msport 120d. It's a proper hoot! So much torque it's all you need an normal roads. 😁

Another great Video Pete thank you for this channel one of the best. Which would you buy raw 135m or the JCW ?
Thanks Jason. For me it would be the JCW 😜
Not sure. The question would be what engine would power it 🤔
I’d love to know wich you would pick between this and the Clubman. I’m trying to decide between them myself, but I haven’t driven either! Help, please.
Easy...Clubman for me 👍
Peter , which would you prefer to drive 118i or 135i or a Hyundai i30 N or Golf GTi TCR
Mini Clubman JCW 😜😂😂
@@PetrolPed JCW still an unknown driving experience yet for you Peter, will Mr P P and the 2 pooches fit in it? They would I believe in a Golf GTI TCR ? Anymore actual details yet on the JCW, delivery spec etc. My Daughter has her new Mini Cooper 5dr hatch running down the Cowley line in the next couple of weeks before the God forbid Brexit deadline date.
