I once heard Elvis Costello evaluate this album as his worst and even apologizing to his fans...!!! - This is so incredible to me because I was amazed immediately by it when it came out, and it is definitely one of my 10 classics pop albums I like the most and without any break for all these years. Stupid. AND: It is one of the very few 80ies- platters where somebody did ya good job with electronic sound components and with the sound of the drums as well. Somebody agree??
Naturally, I loved it too and didn't have MTV. I had the promo poster and it took reading his superb autobio to realize he's like filmmaker Jean Renoir to his Impressionist painter Rene to see how they are connected. Elvis, this one we Love, is truly inspiring and the Real Deal! Facts.
He did a great interview with Chris Evans on TFI Friday, when the reissue ('congratulations, you just bought our worst LP!') had just come out. That was obviously intended to be the gag/hook-line for the interview. So Chris Evans puts various EC LPs on the table and asks 'what do you think of this one?' Every time Elvis says 'actually, that's a cracker...that's a *great* one...that one's fine...' until Chris Evans eventually breaks into laughter and says 'well, that's not how we rehearsed it, but it was still fun...'
I have to admit this is one of the few Elvis Costello albums I've never heard in its entirety. Might have to give it a listen, cuz there are always hidden gems on his albums.
I don't know how Daryl Hall found the time to do this late in 1983. Hall & Oates were the biggest act in the world in terms of #1 hits from 1980-1984 and they were constantly touring the world at this time. They did not outsell, Michael Jackson at this time but they wrote and produced more #1 singles in this specific time period than Michael and Prince.
Exactly! Philly in my opinion had the Best Blue Eyed Soul Singers than any other State. Len Barry (123), Karen Young (Hot Shot). Even now The Music of Philly is just as popular in England where Boyband/Girlbands do "Covers" of obscure R & B Songs. When the UK Boyband Take That made their TV Debut on Top Of The Pops, England's Longest Running Music Show that Hall & Oates did in the 1970's. They were patterned after New Kids On The Block and their "Debut" Single was "It Only Takes A Minute" by The Tavares. Fortunately for the Writers like Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff a Couple of Gold Coins go into their pockets for songwriting royalties as well as others.
I've no doubt Daryl Hall was hugely successful and popular in 1983, but...they all turn up for Elvis. Burt Bacharach, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Glenn Tillbrook, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams, Roy Orbison, Rosanne Cash, U2...how long have you got? Songwriters know quality when they see it in another songwriter.
She torched it all DOWN!!!! INCLUDING HIM AND HIS INFLATED EGO AND WICKED SENSE OF HUMOR! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 AND HE LOVED LICKING EVERY FLAME THAT CONSUMED HIM. . . THE BED WAS LEFT SMOKING FOR YEARS . . .
I was blown away that Daryl Hall was in This Video. I didn't even think they knew each other. It was such a fun Video. Also Daryl in his own way has strong ties to England. As many of you know he wrote "Everytime You Go Away" in the early days of his Career and Paul Young was allowed to Record it. He also did House Flipping in England, and Maneater was used in a UK Documentary about Samantha "Sam" Mitchell on Eastenders. I would love for Daryl to have had Elvis or someone else perform with him on Live From Daryl's House.
Another Daryl Hall connection to British rock, he co-wrote the title song "Ruthless People" with Mick Jagger for the movie by the same name (starred Danny DeVito and Bette Midler)
Look at how Elvis Costello treats his date in the beginning of the video. Even as an 9 year old boy when I first saw this, I knew that Elvis was a ladies man. Elvis was an awesome role model growing up. The male music acts that are out today make me want to throw up. Elvis has been one of my musical heroes since getting into music at such a young age. Love Elvis. Was lucky to see him live nearly 20 years ago @ Bumbershoot in Seattle. Would love to go see him live again, and shake his hand.
Saw Elvis at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in '84 when this song was his current hit...he played it twice (including the encore) and he was generally pissed off royally and fairly unpleasant throughout the concert. Caught him at The Joint in the Hard Rock Casino a few years later in a duet performance with Steve Nieve, and he was in a much better (dare I say happy?) mood and this show was much more fun/enjoyable. Have been a fan since the late 70's
Goodbye cruel world good experimental L.P. from him especially with all the new age crap out at the time , special guest Darryl Hall what a treat , Hall & Oats smokin' hot at the time may be biased but I'm a Philladelphian. 😁
Have you heard the stripped down version from '84? It's on the Rhino Disc of Goodbye Cruel World. It;s like a great 50's love ballad. Anyway, I saw Elvis do it solo in '84 at the Universal Amphitheatre in L.A. just before the album came out.
It's weird how he comes off as like some sweet 80s hearthrob in this music video, like a Rick Astley with glasses, such a contrast to his earlier image as a edgy angry punk...imagine this is the first Elvis Costello song you heard and then going looking for his other music and finding This Years Model...it would be shocking. I'm not complaining though.
Saw Costello & Hall show in Detroit last night. They didn't do this number :/ Costello & the Imposters with Charlie Sexton were phenomenal, outstanding show.
Please give me back the simplicity of the 1980's when I was drinking the father's beer out that teen girl's fridge when she lied about being at home but her younger brother let me and my crazy friends in. Man, she had some explaining to do I'm sure.
Daryl Hall I believe introduced horns into this tune, and yes it works, it turned a song into a chart it... I wish Elvis would have used more horns in his song's.
Man, this video wouldn't go away in 1984. I seen it everywhere back then. MTV, Nick Rocks, Friday Night Videos, Solid Gold, American Bandstand, Night Flight. Even the bandmates were at the breaking point, most notably Bruce Thomas. Seems like the only one not affected by this disappointment was Daryl Hall, wanting to kill some time before The Big Bam Boom.
Gary Walker I can't remember when men were chivalrous. I miss that. I saw three women, one of whom was pregnant, pushing their broken down car trying to get it from the street and into a parking lot while a bunch of dudes just stood there watching.....
I've loved this song though several break ups! And for what its worth, I think this video does the song a great disservice. Songs about love found and songs about love lost but very few about love cooling down and becoming nothing. its a tough one to write a video treatment for but if they'd tried a little harder, i'm sure they could have come up with something better.
The only thing that would have made this music video even MORE wonderful is if Elvis had hired COCO CARMEL as the female sax player. Coco is utterly gorgeous and is a seriously AWESOME sax player.
I’ve been listening to Goodbye Cruel World off and on for some reason recently. Is it really that bad?? Same goes for Mighty Like a Rose for that matter. Probably like both albums more than Spike. And yeah, Spike too has plenty of great moments (yet another now underrated EC album). My great taste in music can’t win 🤷♂️.
@eilliw nodrod everyone has there opinions but what I was saying is that this song sounds like. Billy oceans when the going gets tough released 2 years later
I just saw Elvis Costello and Daryl Hall on tour together. They each played a good set, but never appeared on stage together to relive this collaboration. That was a little disappointing. Unrelated, but Elvis' date in the video looks about 12. That was a little creepy.
I really don't think this album is terrible, it's just way too busy. There's too much happening in each song which means that the songs themselves don't get the chance to shine.
As Elvis himself has admitted, it's a product of its time. There are some great songs in there, unfortunately everything is swamped in a particular style of production which was hugely popular at the time, but which has dated particularly badly. But there it is, you live and learn. Several of the songs on this LP have enjoyed an afterlife as radically reworked live versions.
Whether or not the actress is of age, the fashion choice clearly screams little GIRL SCOUT. Meanwhile the other actresses are ALL dressed accordingly to a GROWN woman's fashion. Music videos...where creeps can roleplay their dirty fantasies without being flagged as perverted
And now I get to see Costello and Hall perform together!
Who wouldn't want a man, nay a gentleman, to kiss your hand and call you my dear? How charming! I'm so envious.
He's a genius. That word is used way too much, but in this case it's justified.
Agreed.
You said it for me. Even Bob Dylan was impressed by the brilliance of Elvis's lyrical and songwriting.
In June, here in Sac county, I’ll see Daryl and Elvis. I love their music. Can’t wait
I once heard Elvis Costello evaluate this album as his worst and even apologizing to his fans...!!! - This is so incredible to me because I was amazed immediately by it when it came out, and it is definitely one of my 10 classics pop albums I like the most and without any break for all these years. The drum machine was a powerful trend, back then. Daryl and Elvis would survive to become legendary despite this. I confess I loved it anyhow.
Yup... what does he know...lol!
I have to admit this is one of the few Elvis Costello albums I've never heard in its entirety. Might have to give it a listen, cuz there are always hidden gems on his albums.
This song was so underrated it was

to play so much more
on the radio cause it
was a hit come on Elvis

It played on MTV quite often

In NYC it was pretty big but would've been even bigger if you could dance to it there were so many clubs back then
@@BarkleyConners At the time of its release I was living in Ohio - but have bene in NYC since 89. ;)

Yeah. When I first seen that I thought what the hell is he doing there. I’m guess almost nobody even knows about this cameo.

I always assumed everybody knew. And it’s not a cameo, it’s a duet. He sings on the record!

Daryl Halls first project after Hall and Oates. He went to London for a while to chill, and look for inspiration in Britain.

Elvis Costello looks here like Harold Ramis from Ghostbusters.
Looks like his father (Ross) at this age...
