  • Gearing up for ice fishing gets expensive quick and a shelter is a large chunk of the cost. Is it possible to cut down on the cost by using a regular camping tent? We answer that question and show you how to make a standard tent work out on the ice. Plus, we’ll compare the ice fishing experience in a camping tent with our pop-up to see if buying an ice shelter is better.

Glad you made this video. When I first start ice fishing I thought I could get away without using a shelter and just rough it. After just one time out I had decided I needed something so I got the eskimo quickfish 3. I love that tent and would absolutely recommend just spending the money to get an eskimo or a similar style hub shelter. Ice fishing can be difficult and my thoughts are that anything that makes your life easier and more comfortable will improve your chances of getting more fish (more time out) and should be a higher priority than upgrading other gear (rods, reels, lures, etc)
Hub shelters also sell very quickly secondhand so getting your investment back if you decide its not for you would be very easy. Just my two cents

FYI , proper clothing makes a HUGE difference. You really shouldn't need a shelter for every day on the ice. Extreme cold and wind, sure. Sunny low wind days with temps above 20 , shelters not needed if dressed properly. The Striker line is extremely warm, waterproof and durable . Well worth the price!

Hahaha! Having spent quite a bit of time in both, I think an ice fishing shelter would work fine for camping. You just need to figure out an option for flooring and get some heavy duty stakes.

My HT shelter is the same material as a summer tent . It's 6'x6'x6'2" with clear plastic windows and full door wall. The poles are all attached to the shelter with folding couplings. It's about 8 lbs and 100% waterproof in all conditions (unlike hub shelters) . It's also black and heats up well in the sun. I only use my single burner propane stove for extra heat on extremely frigid windy days. I just can't justify the weight , price and lack of waterproofing in those hub style. Unfortunately HT discontinued this model . My first one lasted 20 years. I got a new but used one last year on eBay. I'll be good for life now, at 50 years old.
