BMW 530d F11 Diesel Fumes in Cabin - EASY FIX!

  • At low speeds I have noticed a diesel/exhaust type smell in the cabin. It comes through the ventilation system, so this is how I fixed it - very easily & cheaply.
    This is a common issue on many common rail Diesel engines & is all about the fuel injector ‘leak off’ or fuel return line connectors. All easily accessed at the top of your engine 👍

    A very, very helpful video. For the record, if you just leave it, after a while the diesel turns into a black baked-on mess that is far harder to remove. You tuber Legitstreetcars (?) refers to it in a past video as Black Death. On reassembly it looked as if removing the leak off connector is a two step process, lift up to unlock and then remove. Of course the same symptoms could arise from leaks at the lower copper sealing washer but you had just changed those, as you said.

    • @JurisKankalis
      @JurisKankalis Рік тому

      Naaah I think the black death is actually the gunk that accumulates around a broken/improperly seated injector and then spreads around - ruining and killing everything. Either way - leaking injectors are NOT GOOD - no matter which end they leak from.

    Hi - I have an issue of spent fumes entering the cabin when I come to a standstill. There's an error code - Auxiliary Coolant Pump short circuit to ground - I have read that if this fails, it can let fumes into the cabin, so logically this might need replacing. Do you agree? Any idea where it is??? I have an F10 530D pre-LCI (2010). Many thanks.

      I’m not too sure I’d jump to the conclusion of those two being connected. Definitely investigate & sort out the short on the aux pump, but the two areas I found created fumes were:
      1) the injector leak-off tubes weeping diesel
      2) the EGR bypass cracking on the underside, next to the EGR cooler - very difficult to see unless it’s removed for inspection, or perhaps with a borescope

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому

      It’s actually very easy on the N57 engine. Unplug the electrical connector, undo the HP tube connector, loosen the C shaped clamp holding the injector down & then undo the bolt holding the injector down. A bit of a twist (use a spanner on the metal injector body if necessary) and it should come out.

    The leak off system is to help bleed the injectors and lubricate the tight tolerances in the injectors moving parts internally.

    Nice vid. But wouldn't it be better to replace the entire hose/pipe? My thinking is if 1 of these seals is kaput, then the others probably aint too far off either.

      In the end, that’s what I ended up doing. I was just trying to avoid spending £50 for the sake of some o-rings… but it was easier to just replace the full fuel return tubing 👍

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому +1

      It could be, and you’ll be able to check quite easily if there’s any diesel pooling by your injectors. I also actually found that my EGR was leaking exhaust gases (see my other video on the EGR) which was the main source of cabin fumes 👍

    My injectors has same fluid around them can this cause oil consumption? Why is this happening ? What consequences it has?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      No, not oil consumption but you will have diesel fumes smell & it will probably affect your fuel economy a bit too. It’s also not good having fuel splashing around on top of the engine either.

    • @bmwsincekid
      @bmwsincekid 4 роки тому

      Nut Job Leaking fuel injectors can cause Oil Thinning
      At engine shutdown the fuel pressure should maintain operating pressure or just below that for a substantial period of time. Fuel injector pintle, ball or disc seat leaks as well as the bottom O-ring leak on a side feed injector will cause fuel to escape into the intake manifold. From the manifold the fuel will run down to the intake valves. If an intake valve is in the open position that fuel will enter the cylinder where it will leak past the rings and eventually mix with the engine oil.
      Oil thinning can lead to engine bearing damage and scorched cylinder side walls. In some cases it can even lead to an explosion inside the engine. It has been reported that leaking fuel injectors caused hydro lock because so much fuel has accumulated on top of the piston that when the engine was turned over the engine locked because it could not compress the liquid in the cylinder. Hydralock can cause bent connecting rods, broken pistons and blown head gaskets to mention a view. All very expensive repairs
      I Have Strange Knocking noise Some times When engine is Warm Knocking noise My friend has same car and he never has that noise 🤔 Do you ever noticed knocking tapping noise Its there is the normal Diesel trrrrr sound and then i have this outstanding knocking taping noise ...

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      All of that is correct, but this video is not about injector leaks... it’s the fuel return line which is leaking. This is very low pressure & only leaks onto the top of the valve cover.

    • @bmwsincekid
      @bmwsincekid 4 роки тому

      Nut Job Aham got you , Then no idea why it eats oil and has strange noise, my car has an additional cooler on top, When they removed it last time Because changed Glow Plugs , i had Air stuck in system for 1 year , they did the Ignition on temp high fan low etc , but it didnt worked , then i told them change the coolant They did it as described by bmw With the equipment which Push coolant in and Suck air out , still didnt solved it and after one year me Taking off cap , constantly the air gone . When engine was warm and i putted temp from low to high i heard water gurgling noise and my water pipe never went lose it was hard all yime even after 1 week without using it . I think the heater core had air in it... So Im afraid to remove that cooler

    My E90 has that smell at low speed, think I'll have a go at it's return seals, but I won't be using anything sharp to remove the old rings, the T-pieces are made of plastic (if they're the same as the ones used on the M47 engine and could get damaged, as could fingers! The safest way is to pinch the o-ring on one side and push, it should then loop up just enough to get hold of, hard to describe it in txt but it works
