BMW F11 530d Cracked EGR Cooler - Replacement

  • So I suspected my EGR cooler had cracked because I could smell exhaust fumes around it but couldn’t see anything....
    BMW had already had my car in for the EGR cooler recall, but they didn’t identify this issue 🙄
    I bought a good condition used EGR + cooler off eBay for about £75 and here I am replacing it.

    The big advantage you have now is that you can repair the whole damn car by yourself. And even if it had a lot of problems you can now fix a car that should usually be a good one for longer distances, comfotable yet agile, and also has enough power, features, space...

    Good job done once again 👍 I know this car turning out to be a money pit but for us subscribers your videos are great for diy repairs, after watching you do it I probably would attempt to do all the jobs you did apart from the timing chain. That was a big old job. Hope your getting something of UA-cam to help with the repair cost of this car.

    Hi everyone! Thank you for the video Sir, just got that component changed by BMW, But the whole story is that I got a bit of a nightmare going on with a 2014 F11 520d N47D20 with 130000 km... Engine lamp and warning for driveline shows up for short time and then disappears completely, and comes back randomly and not so often, and no particular reason, just going cruise... Fault code 244C00 showing up at diagnosis. Shop did troubleshooting, checked for leakage, checked the EGR, checked DPF (particle filter) and could not find a problem. They found the turbo had a huge play in its shaft, they showed me and we compared to another turbo, and confirmed it was a lot a play on mine. They said it could be the source and with so much play one should change the turbo anyway due to risk for oil leakage - which we did for a refurbished one. But the issued continued with the warning. They took in the car again, and checked once again the lines for leakage, now using a smoke machine. They found a small leakage in the cooler “flex” metal pipe. And could replace the whole assembly (but I guess not the EGR - need to double check) for a new one. And bingo, after about 80 km the warning “Driveline” came back again. This is a typical BMW fault code nightmare again… I saw this video and thought perhaps anyone can give a hint on where to look at next??? (Sorry for the long novel…)

    Hi, Really appreciate your videos for the guidance and love how you get to the bottom of a problem. Makes it easy for a person like me to tell the garage what exactly to replace or repair. I have a 2011 530d. My question is , What is the normal replacement time for an EGR VALVE ? I got mine replaced from a BMW specialist only 4 months ago. Now the car is throwing codes of EGR valve again ?

    Were you getting any faults logged with the leaking corrugated sections? Mine is logging an intermittent 290900 fault code which is 'measured air mass compared with calculated air mass too high'. It has now started throwing the yellow engine management light on the dash which clears but comes back a few days later. No fumes in my cabin so may not be exactly the same issue but thought I would ask

    Nice video! Got a pre machined 2 mm stainless steel plate with ears that slides on the bolts at the outlet of the EGR cooler. Blends off that pesky system. Will get a fault code and check engine light though, haven`t figured out that part yet. Need to get hold of a guy with tuning capabilities of ECU for that.

    Great job, Nut Job. The last thing you have left - high pressure fuel pump. If this starts generating metal particles then you risk damaging the injectors and the whole system needs to be swapped out (fuel tank, common rail, all the fuel pipes etc).

    Its amazing how the BMW quality went downhill from the older M57 engine......I have a 2006 E91 Touring on 154,000 miles and other than a dodgy throttle flap that gave me many DPF headaches it has never missed a beat!! I was planning to get rid of it but to be fair it pulls like a train has great MPG and just does what i need it to. As always good informative vids here.

      There’s some wisdom there mate 👍
      I’ve come to realise that the newer the diesel car (most modern engines) the least reliable they become at higher mileage. Diesels used to be bulletproof for high-milers but with the extra emissions tech these days they just don’t last as long....

    Do you have to change the gasgets on the exhast connections or is it not worth it, also how do the coolant connections fit into the block are there O rings or anything else needs replacing.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому +1

      In my experience I didn’t replace any gaskets at all. The 2 coolant connections use short plastic tubes (~50mm long) with captive O-rings, so they should still seal nicely. My exhaust manifold to EGR connection doesn’t use a gasket. The EGR to intake manifold uses a thin metal gasket (not multi-layer), so I re-used that.

    Re your dpf, I’m sure you have but it’s worth reading the manual to see the various conditions that need to be met in order that an active regen occurs, these big low revving auto diesels can be difficult to operate within the required parameters under normal driving conditions even on longer fast runs. That used egr looked spotless, nice find.

    It would be interesting to know at what mileage these EGR units start to fail. I have a 4 year old 335d (only 32,000 miles) and have noticed fumes in the car recently. Out of the blue I have had a recall notice. Its booked in next week but I am guessing the unit will just be checked by BMW, rather than automatically replaced. I wish I were as savvy as you. Interesting video. Thank you.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  3 роки тому

      Mine was also inspected by BMW prior to this and they found nothing wrong. Clearly they didn’t look in the right places... but if I remember correctly the recall notice was actually focussed on the EGR cooler, so I suppose they were only looking for coolant leaks. Either way this bypass tube seems to fail on all units eventually, although I couldn’t say at what mileage really.

    Hi very useful and interesting videos and thanks for sharing it
    I have 530d 2014 and few months ago I had egr issue snd was reducing coolant all the time and then replaced egr by bmw recall now I have this issue
    Coolant temperature drops down when I drive after little while and the radiator fan runs I can feel engine heat in cabin and when coolant temperature drops or early morning cool start up I hear engine clicking noise and with acceleration the noise gets very noticeable. Do you have any ideas what it could be?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому +1

      I’m not sure, but losing coolant is definitely not good. Have you removed the under trays & put paper/cardboard down to check for a leak? Best case would be a leak from a damaged hose or connector. I presume BMW replaced the whole EGR cooler assembly & not just the EGR valve? It’s the cooler which is the part of concern as it’ll lose coolant & eventually melt your intake manifold...
      There’s a number of places coolant can be lost, but I’d check the basics first (pipe leaks). Do you get any kind of white exhaust smoke?

    I've just ordered a new one for my BMW. Issue is, its leaking out of the top where it bolts on to the coolant temperature part. There are no cracks on the part at all. So I can't figure out why it's leaking. The bolts don't need tightening as they won't physically tighten any more than they already are. So I can't figure out why it's leaking from where it is. Nonetheless, I've ordered a new one, very very reluctantly, I may add. This car has been issue after issue.

      Have you removed your intake manifold recently? If it’s not properly re-installed then it could be giving you a leak, although I’d expect you to have other error codes in that case like P0069. Also check the joint between the EGR and intake manifold in case it has melted. It’s also possible that your PCV valve is stuck open - that’s a straightforward replacement job (cheap enough though)

    I am senior bmw tech. This would be covered as part of the recall for coolant leak of cooler.
    Part of the check is to check the bypass pipe. If cracked can be claimed via goodwill.
    Good job changing it but you could have had a modified later version for free.
    The second hand one is highly likely to leak coolant.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  2 роки тому

      Well, that’s what I did. You will probably need to remove the front slam panel which runs across the top of the radiator & this should give you better space to get hands & tools in there. Just be careful which unit you buy if it’s off EBay because they all suffer from cracks in the bypass tube eventually, so one that looks pretty clean from a lower-mileage car is a good bet. I’m sure there’s also a set of EGR ‘adaptations’ to reset (as with everything BMW), however I didn’t do this.

    Did you have to replace any seals or o rings when you did this job?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  2 роки тому +1

      I actually didn’t need to replace any gaskets. There is a single metal gasket on the intake manifold side (not a multi layer gasket), and the turbo side doesn’t need one. I reused the coolant O-rings on the feed/return pipe connectors.

      @@Nut_Job. great thanks mate, so you think you can get away with reusing them? I tried to find the o ring part numbers but can't seem to locate them online anywhere

      From memory, they are just rubber O-rings & I’ve got a bit kit of various sizes I could have used to replace them. They were in good condition though - not worn/squashed/perished so I reused them & had no leaks.

    Can you do an EGR delete on thatl?? People have no issues EGR deleting E46 diesels, apparently it doesnt affect MOT and you dont have to deal with all of that nightmarish bs!

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can remove the EGR & cooler but you also need to ‘map’ it out so the ECU doesn’t try opening/closing it. You will also need to remove the DPF because it won’t regenerate properly without the EGR and this will fail an MOT. You could remove & gut the DPF, then weld it back up so an MOT inspector can’t see... I’m just not keen on risking all that (plus the potential fine ££ if caught), plus it’s bad for everyone’s health 💨

  • @gregory891

    Save the old EGR valve, it’s likely sticking due to internal carbon buildup, which can be cleaned out.

    When your chain broke was it remapped??? I hear you don't want to chip them because they break chains.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  3 роки тому

      No, it was standard. They break chains because they’re just not designed to last unfortunately. With the chain being at the back, and not a duplex arrangement, and with the pathetic size of the chain... I expect they only realistically expect them to do maybe 150k miles and then beyond that they don’t care.

      I’m not saying they’re bad engines, but they don’t seem to be designed to last as long as older BMW engines. Changing the top timing chain (the one that usually breaks) before it breaks is actually not a massive job.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it can be deleted (mapped out from ECU) but it will affect the DPF regeneration... that’s why I replaced my EGR rather than delete it. You could cut the DPF open, remove the contents and weld it back up (to pass inspection), but this is breaking the law in most places. I prefer to get it all working correctly like it was designed 👍

      @@Nut_Job. I myself will probably do block off plates and map it out .. or it will cause clogging in the intake manifold again. What part of MOT would this fail? Visual or scan? EGR is not really active for emissions tests or MOT is it? Just curious here. For DPF, does EGR absence stop DPF regeneration? I'll probably just do downpipe on mine
      Love all the videos you take the time to produce ... thank you very much!

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      If we’re talking about UK MOTs then as far as I know they are just visual checks to confirm they are still there & haven’t been tampered with. Mapping out the EGR will affect DPF regeneration & may cause it to block quicker - so often people will cut it open, gut the filter & weld back together so it appears intact for the MOT. If your engine is in good order it should still pass the smoke/emissions test without the DPF... but it is quite obvious from the look & sound of the exhaust what’s been done 😉👍

    Why not a EGR Delete?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      I did consider it... but it will complicate the DPF regeneration. So that means you’ll really need to do a DPF delete too (which is illegal) and the exhaust sound is quite noticeable... so I opted to just keep things OEM for now 👍

      I did consider it (mapping out, not removing because it won’t pass it’s MOT) but the cracked bypass pipe was a defect I wasn’t happy to leave. Then there’s the DPF regen that you mentioned... you could try to gut the DPF and weld it up so it can’t be seen etc... but I just thought it best to stay fairly stock for now 👍
