I have now owned a 2014 S1000R Sport for just over a year now. 8 years old and it’s still a fantastic bike, way ahead of its time. I agree with Michael, it’s bike where you really can have your cake and eat it.
"In October, the bike goes back to BMW. At which point I will be devastated". I'd say that sums it up pretty well.
Then he will have to put his hand in his pocket to help the pain
More ground clearance for the track? Interesting... what rubs?
Heat in slow moving traffic?
The engine vibrates, the clutch is really heavy, and the exhaust, which sounds great during a blast round the block, is bloody annoying once you're cruising at a steady speed at anything over 60 MPH. Otherwise it's a great bike.
360P?! Would it hurt you guys to buy a GoPro? Even a used one?
+benjamin reynolds All the guys on the staff probably have smartphone capable of better video too. Doesn't make any sense.
It's UA-cam not the cams
Maybe they were going for the artistic "filmed on a potato" feel on this one. :P
How can you be filming this in Aug. 2014 in 360p. What did you use? A calculator?
Dusan Lukovic LOL
Good old Neevesy such solid reviews, and committed one man camera work!
Helmet, gloves, leather jacket and SNEAKERS?
Pretty sure these are riding "street" shoes.
360p? Did you record this with an iPhone?
Micah Murray i dont think so, becouse todays smarthope record in much higher specs.. my Xperia Z1 does record in 1920x1080 (30fps&60fps). So i'm thinking they used a calculator :D
+PajoPatak Lmao. They borrowed granny's old camcorder.
Nice, and be sure to let us know if that stalling issue gets worked out or not.
Thank You Almighty God for showing me that I will buy one for myself
Excellent review Michael, keep up the good work...your reviews and feedback on bikes is probably the best on you tube. Thorough, articulate and very helpful in making a decision on buying if your in the market. Surprised the only thing that wasnt mentioned was the amount of buzz this bike transmits to the pegs and hands at certain RPM's...otherwise spot on. Cheers.
Late to the party..but bought one today 😊
MCN, 360p? Please, this is 2014. HD equipment doesn't cost that much
Thanx for the offer in last week's paper for 3 issues of Ride for £1 and 3 issues of Bike for £1, I called the Freephone number and ordered it !!!
why only 360p?
this was on my list until I found out the insurance was more than double either the KTM Super Duke or the Yamaha FZ10
Best channel. Their reviews and long time reviews are the best. Loveeee you! Haha thanks for all the videos!
One awesome bike :D
Great video, thanks! Love the S1000R. :-]
360p? what is this sorcery
the BMW is really nice, I don't know why the ApriliaTuono 1100 factory is considered a Naked bike with an almost full fairing on it.
Thanks Neeves. I ordered a new S1000R. After sitting on one then getting to test ride one I have placed an order. Your review helped me make my choice! Cheers!
Still watching in 2024 and my 2015 R just had the engine stall issue!
nice review, ordered mine today :)
Another credible review I can actually use in making a decision. Cheers!
Good grief...why would anyone shoot from under the seat?
I liked that.
Is it just me or the motor is a little on the buzzy side? Not as smooth as Jpn fours.
I used Q3's on my s1000R....they are magic. Check out my UA-cam channel...I took my s1000R to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.....THE MOTOGP TRACK!!!!
yeah I have the Q3's on my ZX10R I don't Know anyone who has used them that does not like them.
Had the exact same stalling issue on my K1300s rumours are it's too do with battery load and supply cables all I know is it went when I put in a brand new battery.
Best 6-minute bike review ever. 👌🏼🏁
Best review I've seen on mcn. Keep up the great work!
How is reliability? and what problems has it had?
Only one fault in six months ? that must have been a good one ?
Dainese Safety Socks? ;)
I can give you a longer term report -‘17 S1000R, owned since new, purchased 1/2018, 54000km; mainly country road and twisters, many track days; fair bit of touring: brilliant experience, with some exceptions (detailed below) reliable quick fun and comfortable, to the point where the upgrade to the new super/hyper nakeds seems marginal. Issues: on it third water pump (warranty), developed carbon buildup on the injectors at about 50000km (only premium 98 fuel used), had the noisy timing chain issue fixed (as much as it is ever fixed) with a new chain tensioner, and has had the hot start issue leave me stranded a couple of times not really fixed but in conditions that it happens will leave the tank open while I stop. Brilliant bike.
Wow that is a killer time period to 'trial out' the bike. Hat's off to BMW in allowing you that long a review period. Hats off to you as well in having what I would imagine is the necessary integrity to allow BMW to give you that bike for such a period of time. I'm currently learning on a 2015 Yamaha MT-07 but have my eye on the 1,000 class in either super-sport of naked. Outside of the cost to purchase one of these here in Sydney Australia, is the best option for a short rider like myself (163 cm's tall & between 68-69 kg's weight). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Respect & ride safe.
+Gabriel Johannson
How do you like your Yamaha? I'll be learning on an older SV650 but would love to buy that guy next :)
+ EverythingisFire, sorry for the delay in reply. The MT07 is a great bike for a learner. Its has loads of hidden power that you learn to utilize as you get more confident. The engine breaking is very powerful and most useful. I have only taken it out on the highway once for a 2 hour ride. While the bike didn't suffer the journey you could feel the wind blast (even with a screen) and a more comfy seat could have saved my butt and lower back without doubt. The MT07 isn't a long distance cruiser but its only a 680cc (here in Australia) so the power does come into play at some point.
Breaks are more than sufficient and suspension is adequate. I'm only a short rider & only around 67kg-70kg(at my worst) so it can carry me without any issues.
For around town and inner city commuting its the best bike in its class hands down. Loads of torque that keeps you ahead of the traffic and its light enough for management. The front end is a little too light for my liking but that may be a reflection of my limited abilities.
I would not hesitate in recommending the MT-07 for all learner riders or experienced riders who are looking for a rock solid fast inner city commuting bike.
Bye one you won't regret it. Heaps & heaps of fun mate. H E A P S.
Respect and ride safe.
G.
Bit late now, but the fault with it stalling is 100% the clutch switch. Known fault and BMW actually have a recal on it, where they replace the perch, lever, switch and cable. Just had my recal done on my 2014. Appart from the stall issue it also lost cruise control.
Damn, cruise control on a sport naked - don't think I've ever seen that before. Nice mix of fast bits + practical bits - very nice deal from the sound of it.
Test rode one today and what it may lack in character compared to some Italian bikes, it has it by tons on effectiveness as a whole. Turns easy, very quick, one finger brakes, and the gadgets! For the price it simply sells itself! I rode babygale and have 2 Ducs but this one is really good package have to accept makes me wanting go back to 2-wheeled cars ( mean 4 cylinder bike ) :)
I would also mention the big turning circle as con.
If you’re doing U-turns, you must be lost.
You 've said that you 're using the s1000r for about four months.
I wanted to ask you, since you 're sayng that you 've been in many places, if you are travelling with this bike and how easy is to carry luggage with it. And one final question, what kind of luggage have you used, if you have used any.
thank you in advance
Can MCN do a review of the electronics of the S1000R vs the R1/ZX10R etc. It would clarify what the BMW lean angle sensor does in various situations modes, when the front and rear brakes are linked etc......
The clutch stall is a known thing-- i had the same thing. Went into BMW- they hooked it up to computer, and found a lot of exhaust errors. So they cleared that out. re-downloaded the note or something- i really have no idea. and it hasn't happened since.. :) Cheers
The stalling is a common issue. Clutch in to stop, get your down shifting done, clutch half way out(engine braking maybe), then clutch back in. It seems like it can't catch itself when the revs fall back down to idle.
Thanks for posting such a honest good review on here Micheal also fabulous videos on You Tube. Good work. I am torn between the BMW S1000R and the Tuono. I have read a 2016 Tuono 1100 is going to be released soon. Have you had a chance to ride one or have you heard any info? Also what are your thoughts on the reliability of the Tuono? I have 2005 Speed Triple that has been wonderful but I want better brakes, lighter weight and if it is on the menu more power ;)
Cheers & Gears
B
from Canada.
Funny camera angle, looking bac at rider from handle bars. Not sure it works.
Interested to know how you think it compares to the FZ1 ABS?
Appreciate the review.
Thank you.
would you guys be doing a similar test on the SUperDuke??
keep hearing about the tires..any recommendations whats the very best for the Beast or will the stock do??
thank!!!
thinking about trading in my 2012 zx10r which i love on a Tuono. took the s1000r for a test ride 5min into the ride took away the thinking, getting the beemer, excellent bike.
How about this as a commuter plus the odd ( typically Australian) 3000k loop tour loaded with kriega? Too much wind head on on freeway use?
Great review, have been keeping an eye on your long tem reports.. Would love to see you guys get the new BMW S1000XR and see a long term review on that, I did a lot of research on my KTM SMT, and your long term reviews helped me lots.. So I'm looking forward to seeing how the New BMW goes, I may just replace my SMT with the S1000XR if its as good as the S1000R.. Thanks again for all your bike reviews
I have one of these and I love it. I look at other things and many are better in a given area but this does everything. Went to amsterdam in a day in summer and all I’ve changed is the screen which I swapped for a larger one. As Michael says the seat is hard and id love to know if anyone knows of an alternative for longer journeys and can recommend some easy release panniers? Great video!
solid review - very happy with my S1000R, extras i have done are decat, akra shorty can, tail tidy, hp levers, renthal wide bar, rearsets, evotech rear sliders, motomillion light weight rear disk, cnc chain adjuster. waiting for my sprint air filter then its remap and dyno. bike is lethal up to 120mph then it gets flat, but far more fun in traffic than a sbk.
in the market for another naked and this review helps ALOT with understanding the S100R. Thank you for the review.
How does the asymmetric headlamp work out. Is it designed for LHD markets or do they sway it around for RHD markets ?? !!
Great review told me everything I wanted to know, neevsey always on point only thing I couldn't put up with is that reservoir on the handle bars flapping about. All the technology that's gone into that bike and that's the best they can come up with? Hideous! apart from that nice bike.
Thank you Mr. Neeves. You're helping me make a decision about this bike. GREAT reviews as always and always good info about the tires used. Looking forward to your final input about this bike. Cheers from San Diego, CA. USA
Michael Neeves. That's all that has to be said about a video for me to watch it right away. Insightful, informative, captivating. Doesn't hurt that he is talking about that BMW s1000r either xD.
Could you do an aprilia tuono v4 long termer video? Just a request. Would want to know more. Cheers!
Aprilia haven't given us long term test bikes for years...Neevesy MCN
That sucks! But thanks anyway!
+neevesybikes
Man, that does suck!
It's my next bike unless the KTM or this BMW blow me away via test rides...
Do you need tyre warmers with the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC2 compound? I have a set for this summer.
+firecul42 ye ive seen it... Looks and sounds loads better.
two things:
1) 1080hd thank you :)
2) 2:57 everything very very sexy....... :D
Can I add that at no point were any speed limits broken during the making of this video yeah right!!!!!
Mmh, this is probably my most favorite bike..! This or the double R, I can't choose between the two.
did the stalling get sorted also what about wind blast on motorway ? presume bmw do a lil windshield ?
Great 👟 sneakers 😉
Nice review I really like this bike to be my next one, how is it with a passenger and what is the comfort for them?
Do you have the up and down QuickShifter installed?
Thanks for the advice on the SBS sintered brake pads..
Thought I was wearing the bottoms of coke bottles at first instead of my glasses.
I'd have to get rid of that exhaust system... The still of the bike banked over looked awful when u could see all under it. Akrapovic full system would do nicely.
Check out RoyalJordanian's if you haven't already, looks and sounds great.
I paid $6800 for my leftover 2014 Yamaha FZ-1 so the reality in the united states is to find a super awesome bike that just didn't sell for some reason, for a few years. The 5 years old FZ-1 was about 40% off. I have never ever seen a REASONABLE price on a BMW but that could be a USA -only problem, and the Yamaha has a manual idle adjustment for stalling issues
Not just the USA bud
Good, solid report. Nice job Neeves and MCN - keep it steady.
why in one video say 146 at the back week and 160 at back week on this vid
Comrades! Need an advice. I have been riding f800r for two seasons as my first bike. Kind to feel it quite well but need more power. 90% of my rides are in Moscow with 10% not longer than 200 km outside trips. Really like s1000r, would you recommend it? Does it demand any particlarification skills from its rider, I am a bit afraid of its power, frankly speaking. Thanks!
I'd imagine the F800R and S1000R are going to feel totally different, but if you've got the money I'd go for it. I've heard nothing but amazing things about the S1000R.
R or XR. Hard to say which is more perfect.
How does this work then? I assume MCN pay BMW to lease the bike but why then would you put the crash protection and carbon fiber mud guards on it?
+Stuart D89 its sponsored too..just like the front n rear mud guards...its excellent pr for these after market companies
I really like this bike, but I like to take two week cross country motorcycle trips. Would this bike be comfortable for 500+ miles a day?
You should check out the S1000XR for long trips.
I have had the stalling issue too! It only happened once, it happened during the break in period but the techs didn't find anything when I bought it in for service.
A new clutch lever switch sorts the problem...Neevesy MCN
omg no gear protection, just normal......
Fluid tanks on handle bars annoy me look wrong
A bike that stalls 1/100 times is a huge failure rate.
Great naked bike. Very happy with mine.
God bless your ankles when you go down...
At least he has pants on...lol
down here in Florida, we ride with shorts and t-shirts...we don't ride on tracks that way but tooling around town is quite normal....
+LJ Balongue You know, it does not make any difference if you put your bare skin to the ground on track-asphalt or street-asphalt.. ;) Dress for the slide, not for the ride. And nowadays it is sooo easy to wear proper gear. Riding jeans, good looking boots, a nice leather jacket and some decent leather gloves and you'r good to go. Stuff that almost no one would recognize as riding gear but delivers quite a good amount of protection.
However, ride safe. ;)
Great diary! Thank you for the information. I want this bike, but I want it to thrill me like the Tuono does. I just don't know if I can live with an Aprilia. I know the BMW will be the better daily bike.
Why do you say that?
BOTH bikes ROCK! Aprilia is one amazing bike though! Good at everything and looks better than all others...
Is there a way to turn the ABS and Traction controll off quick and easy, and does it stay off when you restart the bike?
You can preset the bike just the way you like it.
Terrific quick long-term review!
160hp at the rear wheel? what are you talking about? it has 160 at the crank,it should have less at the wheel...
phoenix1925 Don't believe the manufacturers paper crank numbers, they are just marketing. For instance, the previous R1 is supposed to have 178 bhp, and yet they pull more than 30 hp less than a 2010 S1000RR in comparative dyno tests. Somebody is fibbing, as they only differ 15 hp on paper and it is probably both yamaha and BMW.
BMW have actually been modest and low-balled both the old S1000RR and the S1000R. They pull 180 and 160 respectively in reliable dyno test, at the rear. Which probably mean 200+ for the RR and ~180 for the R at the crank.
what about wind protection on the highway?
1,000th like! Yay what do I win?
360 pixels.... we meet again!!
It might be a very good bike but BMW think we are priviledged to have the oportunity to buy their bikes! Went to a dealer and they offered peanuts for my 7 months bike and when I asked how much discount they would give me they replied that the word "discount" does not exist with BMW...so, my reply was: "Keep your bike and I will keep my cash" ....lol....sale lost to kawasaki... (Vines of Guildford)
+LUIZ MAZZONI Even BMW-dealers and -salesmen are only people. My BMW-dealer is just great. Nice, relaxed, helpful. And I got a (big) discount on my new GS, as well. Then again me and my family are satisfied customers there for years now, I think that has to be considered, too. The thing is: BMW positioned itself as a "premium brand". Therefore they can't put big discounts on their bikes in general because that would infiltrate the "premium-image" of the brand. Try to do that with Ducati, you will most likely get the same response as from BMW.
Kawasaki on the other hand is (like most of the other Jap-brands in Germany) well known for big discounts, almost goes as a "budget-brand".
Very true!
WOW that bike is HOT!!!!
What about the Wind Fatigue riding it ?
MAN! You Brits sure do love your heated grips lol
cuz its bloody cold
yeah - riding through aturmn, winter and spring here is pretty goddamn cold if you don't have them. 3 years riding in the winter on a 500 taught me the meaning of cold. windchill down to -30C is kind of nasty on the fingers. tears freezing to your cheeks. it's harsh.
purklefluff u rode in minus 30?
Dominik Knapik i've ridden many times in approx -5 with no windchill.... but then if there's a strong wind, or when you're riding at 70mph, the windchill factor takes it down to a "what it feels like" temperature of roughly -30.
it's horrible. lol
***** this year's shaping up to be fairly mild. i'm still electing to keep my 1000cc superbike (my daily rider LOL) in the garage most days as it's icy and wet (in equal measure) most mornings. couple this with grit on the roads it's not pleasant. (i did get out today though for a long blast. great fun and not too cold at all!)
a couple of years back i was riding through snow and over black ice for a good couple of months of the year. winter riding sucks in our country. let's all move to southern spain =D
Neevesybikes how do you rate s1000r as an wheelie machine in 0---5 . And how is it two up .... Nice review by the way
Two-up is ok and it's very easy to wheelie. Neevesy MCN
neevesybikes
Ok thanks for info
Nice detailed review very nice!!!!!!!!!
How is it al low speeds? Is it jerky under 4000rpms?
It's pretty smooth
