You can learn a lot from listening to isolated guitar tracks. The guitar doesn't sound as good by itself and uses more high frequencies than you realise, but that's why it sits in the mix so well. On a side note, it's interesting to hear so much low end in John's signal here.
Try using a single speak open back amp, like an old Peavy with some good distortion (like the bandit models), but the trick here is to ADD mids to it, not turn them way down like a lot of players do. Adding mids to your tone will make you cut through mixes so much better and will sound so much better overall.
