In this episode, I take a look at philosophical conflict and how to apply it to a long form series. Breaking Bad is all about character change over time, and the bedrock of character change is philosophical conflict.

"How far will someone be willing to go to feel truly alive, even for just a short time?"
I love that this quote shows how Breaking Bad's philosophical conflict fits in perfectly with the show's concept of meth and the drug trade.

I see a nod to the question “If you knew you only had a short time left before you died, what would you do with it?”. As a dedicated husband and father, he chooses to fulfill his mission as provider protector of his family by doing what he has always done but, in a much bigger way with no time left to spare.
This puts a time sensitive condition on this mission that wasn’t ever there before. In this state those motivated to use that window to complete a mission or to fulfill their purpose, have a sense of urgency that promotes a fearless, hasty, no nonsense, aggressive, and willing to do anything attitude of acceptance in everything they do.
Under this condition, the lines of morality blur as their purpose felt, the importance of the mission, and the time sensitivity all combine to hold the highest moral value, thus reducing the morality surrounding the means to that end. While his purpose and mission part of his personal righteous cause, it can often not be for others, yet they experience the same motivation and attitude under this waiting to die condition.
The choice to have him take on this mission through an illegal and morally challenged endeavor, reflects this commonality, and in doing so raises the idea that no matter how righteous the cause, these last chance missions are always at the core a selfish act of a dying person. They are more willing to risk their own safety as a result, be it for lack of care for the consequences or making the ultimate sacrifice for those they love.
Perhaps a point lost in the morality argument due to the subject of the scourge of drugs like meth on society, and the interesting juxtaposition of a mild mannered family man and school teacher chooses to take the path of supplying it and furthering the problem. The issue a writer would face in trying to bring this idea to light for all is, not everyone is a parent and not everyone is married. These two experiences are things humans cannot properly fathom until they are their own. This means for some, his motivation and choice to discard the safety and well being of others, is more relevant than those who understand the true purpose of those who have committed their existence to those they love unconditionally.
This is most likely why analysis of this story is often focused on the larger social issue rather than the struggles of a dying family man in leaving his loved ones before he can secure their futures. Something he otherwise had planned to spend his days doing over a lifetime which, now he doesn’t have. A lot of viewers simply cannot relate or understand the emotional aspect of knowing their ability to be present for their loved ones is being taken away, and that it would be their fault the family will be broken, unprotected, and struggling to maintain the safe comfortable life he had provided for them. Others with one or more of those experiences in hand, will live the horror of this situation in full understanding, and likely will have less empathy for the addicts and people caught up in the game, with the preexisting full understanding that they’d mow them all down to save their own families without a second thought.
This of course makes conclusions impossible and debate pointless regarding the morality of his choices. The sides simply aren’t level in terms of greater life experiences. In the end it leaves us in a place where the only way it all can be summed up to meet both sides understandings, is the neutral statement that can be applied to either point of view…. “It is what it is”.

Yes but with conflict. So hypothetical morals and beliefs faced with real world consequences and outcomes. Like telling the truth is "always" the right thing to do... until it gets you in a lot of trouble for no good reason.

I never thought before how his line 'growth, decay, then transformation' is foreshadowing everything else. Shows a clear distinct understanding from the writer of their message from the beginning, controlling everything that is written.

I do think there are morals. I believe morals are easy to sort out when looked at the right angle.
I think it is dangerous for morals to err or become corrupt by a bad idea or example that looks tempting. I also think it is useful to realize that this tempting idea is an error, see why that is, and then think about how one can avoid it.

Hello! I've been wanting to say, thanks for the video essays you did on How to Create a TV Series, they are going to help me a lot in the future. Althrough I do have a question:
Can I have more than one philosophical conflict in my show? For example, not only a Legacy themed philosophical conflict, but also a Loyalty themed philosohphical conflict dedicated to SOME episodes.

this was an incredibly well put together stuff but i have to slightly disagree on the last point when ppl say that they arent focused on all the philosophical stuff you mentioned, like i said i slightly disagree not fully, cause i think that aesthetics, cohesion and the ways ideas and things are presented are -ok this is the controversial part- but i'd say they are slightly more important than character philosophy and what not, not by a longshot though

Great vid about this topic. I think it just made a mistake when comparing the development of philosophical theory, to mathematical equations, a mistaken observation because this is not the way a philosophical statement is developed, there are constant debates of arguments and counter-arguments, and it uses much of the act of telling stories for this, just remember the myths and thousands of books written by philosophers. Besides, that, the video was very instructive.
