Got an idea with legs, but you’re unsure how to utilize your plans for character development? You’ve come to the right place. We have a free character profile template as well as lots of tips on how to make your pilot pop with excellent character development.
There are a few things to think about when you’re delving into creating a character profile.
WHO?
It seems simple, but right off the bat we need to know who we're going to follow for the next 100 episodes. Let's start with our lead. Who are they on the outside? On the inside? What's the cast of characters look like and who populates the world?
WHAT?
Now that you know who's in the story, it's time to provide some backstory. What's happened to them that defines them? Do they have a secret past? Also, what's happening to them right now?
WHERE?
Are we in a border town in Arizona? Madison Avenue? Or Stars Hollow, Connecticut? Hey, Atlanta is a TV show about how its characters deal with an entire city!
When you're fleshing out your character development, take time to figure out how you can tell the deepest and most meaningful story possible.

StudioBinder... The gift that keeps on giving !
Guess you liked this week's episode? 👌🙌
Thank you so much!
this is awesome could you do it with more character breakdowns examples?
Ghost in the Shell had potential to be the greatest Sci Fi film since blade runner instead it was a beautiful boring paint by numbers film. It broke my heart because the original Anime was just amazing
You guys are amazing. From a filmmakers perspective, you are a big help and doing things others don't. Thanks.
Hey Timothy, glad you've found our videos helpful. That's the ultimate goal. :-)
Thanks I'm 12 and I've always wanted to make a ninja tv show but I don't have animation stuff so I just use ninjago lego stop motion
your videos are extremely helpful! binge watching on your channel now. great content! 👍
What was the last video you binged on? 👍
Thank you so much for these useful templates.
Absolutely! Here's an article from our blog that further explores the art of writing and developing characters in stories: www.studiobinder.com/blog/character-development/ Enjoy!
You're seriously one of the best and most underrated film-related YTers
Thanks Idan! You're on the ground-floor with us so we appreciate it!
What are the qualities of a strong (and dynamic) character? Let us know in the comments!
IMPORTANT QUESTION: Could you elaborate on the Who portion of this video? Like how do you figure out who your character is. Aka( imposter, family man, adulterer, Alcoholic). Thanks in advance.
Flaws!
Vanessa's Fiction writing, Art & Photography I think that’s up to you to figure out. Make it make sense for your story
Could this process work for developing a novel series instead of a t.v series.
My question is should you do a chart for each episode, season or one for the whole show?
It's weird showing clips of Game of Thrones in this one since the *book author* did all the hard work in creating the characters and story arcs.
Great job guys ! i do respect your efforts..Keep it up
If i may ask ..what's the name of the tv show on 4:30 ( Mega store part )?
Thanks for being on the ground-floor with us! The more comments/likes we get, the more UA-cam suggests it to other subscribers, so keep them coming! The show @ 4:30 is called "Superstore"
Thank you .. !
Ugh...this just reminded me how much I hated the ending of Lost. 😒
This video was great! You backed up your thesis with examples and it was interesting.
Glad you liked it! We do our best to provide actionable advice (while having them backed up with example). Thanks!
Loved this! MM is such a great example to use!
I'm currently writing on studiobinder and came to youtube to research character creation. I clicked on the most appealing video and watched until the end, before realising you're the studiobinder yt channel! Haha. Not surprised, thankyou for all that you do, you are helping me immensely! Legends. 🙌
Already done with this character worksheet and it was really helpful. I had some ideas on how I wanted them to be and what they liked. But, by forcing me to write them and actually seeing their wants in the same page I was able to make their Dynamics much more interesting
Thank You guys So much!
The link to the worksheet isn't working.
I need to do this before I develop story lines
This is an amazing resource that really helped me out! THANKS!
I'm planning to someday create a tv show, I'm graduating high school next year and plan to study that field. Thank you for this
For the example, avatar the last airbender would have worked great
"BRAVO DARLING... BRAVO"
Hahahaha. Who ever edited this deserves a raise! like 5:27 and 6:26. Pure gold. Thank you!
I feel like you should do another character analysis on The Big Lebowski.
There's doesn't appear to be a link for the worksheet on the page you send us too. Can we get that updated?
Hi there, you'll see an email box when you scroll down (with the dark background). Go ahead and enter your email address and it should be delivered instantly. We'll be sure to make it more clear on the page though.

I just started watching this channel today and I'm hooked. I have an undergraduate degree in tv/film production and want to become a developer of tv and film. This channel is awesome to help guide me in my writing which I've let go some years ago due to life happening, but this has always been a dream of mine to write/produce for tv/film!
This video is very helpful! Thank you so much!
When I click on link above, I don't see how to download the FREE Character Development Worksheet. Please help.
Good vid. It was very helpful
Glad you found it helpful! What's your favorite character archetype?
This is amazing help for aspiring film makers like me.
Characters are only characters when you give them specificity in attitude or behavior.
Being part of the Hollywood remake of Ghost in the Shell is not something to be proud of
All I want to do now is watch Mad Men...
Thanks for the spoiler warning :/

Your videos and materials have been invaluable in my high school Film Studies class. StudioBinder is top-quality!
Would love a video on books you'd recommend film production students read
Great video. Where do I download the character template?
Hi Dallas, you can download it on the link in the description (www.studiobinder.com/tv-show-character-development-sheet-profile-template). Just scroll down, enter your email address, and we'll send it your way instantly!
Nice🎉❤
well thanks for showing me this after I am almost done with my 1st draft, youtube.
Hello, I'm currently developing a show at the moment that I'd like to get off the ground someday and this playlist has been of great help to me so thank you for doing this. When it comes to writing what has happened to a character that defines them, would you include flashbacks shown within the show as part of it? If you could help me, that would be great! Again, thank you for this series and I wish you the best of luck.
Thanks 😀
What are the ACTS for writing an episodes?
Why isn't the character worksheet available anymore?
Brilliant. Great job!👌
Glad you enjoyed it, do you agree with our character breakdown?
@@StudioBinder Yes, I do.
spoilers ??????
One thing that I think makes a great character is that if the lead(s) ask that character to do something, that character does it without complaining; I was seeing a sixth-and-final-season episode of NBC's hit medical/action series Emergency! ("Isolation," from 1977 [OAD Saturday, March 19, 1977]), and at one point, Dr. Morton was asked to go with Johnny and Roy to help out at the rural fire station that Johnny and Roy were stuck at; he went back straightway with them, and while I didn't get to see Dr. Morton actually doing any work, just that willingness on his part to go to that rural fire station and help out was remarkable development in and of itself, IMO.
No
Basically the video says just create characters
That guy said Pingchong? Pingpang?
No analysis for the Sopranos or Oz?
The link to worksheet doesn't work
Thank you so much for this :)
These videos are so helpful
thanks for the spoiler
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Woww...
Crisis actor!!!!!!!!!!
.
It is an amateur and mediocre content ! Below Studiobinder's standards .
It is good and useful, though it could have been a little longer to cover other functions, too.
Wow. I just watched two of your videos. Didn't like 'em.
Really…?
Don't forget "WHY". This will all be pointless if there isn't a WHY
