Today I'll be taking a look at a different kind of story: the contained thriller. Contained thrillers are tightly wound stories that work more like roller coasters than stories with deep philosophical plot.

I think "don't breathe" was a fairly good contained thriller too.
Oh, definitely dude!
I’m writing a thriller novel and feel that tips for writing screenplays are so much more accessible than craft writing books/videos. Thank you for this!
12 Angry Men is one of my alltime favourite films ever.
@@aj.s... "You don't really mean you'll kill me, do you."
@@lewisanderton8062 that moment was legendary.
“Hush” (2016) is a little masterpiece in my opinion.
It sucks so bad. The bad guy was revealed too early.
Im agree with you!
@@taylorfrizzell5119 his face is not important to the story, it is importante to build up tension then he says "now you see" to her.
Besides, it is a contained thriller, not a giallo film
Indeed it is. Hush is one of my most studied movies. Besides his inconsistence about real deaf people, it is perfect at his structure
I’ve literally been watching all his videos to prepare to write my thriller film and now I’m blessed with this? Thank you!
Ive been trying to write a contained thriller for weeks and nobody has any good videos on it, thank you.
Thrillers: make your audience breathing quickly
Suspense: make your audience hold their breath
Horror: disturb your audience (question norms, try not to disgust)
Me and my friend were really talking about writing a contained thriller and the next day you release this video. Your a genius thank you.
10 Cloverfield Lane has the best idea for a film I've seen in a while, alltough I thought the writing could've been a bit better, it's not bad at all.
Was literally mind mapping a thriller for the past few days and here you are with the perfect video. Thank you Tyler!
First! I love how you go above and beyond and explore how to write all stories and not just drama :) there are a lot more contained thrillers than I realized.
can't contained thrillers be more than just roller coaster rides tho? I feel there is potential in any film to have a dramatic narrative and philosophical content no matter what the genre is and how many locations are used. I am just curious because thrillers are some of my favorite movies and I do want to make thrillers but I also want to make films of importance that have philosophical conflict and meaning to them.
Of course. You don't need the permission of someone on youtube to do that.
@@pufelmulticolorido well yeah I know I don't need his permission I am just asking for his opinion on that whether I might agree or disagree with him.
Would you like a play in which the action unwinds like a coiled spring and every single speech develops the situation, but a play, too, in which the characters are all created and exhibited in the round? Yes, you would. And so would I. And it can't be done.
This is a quote by playwright J.B. Priestley.
So either character development or plot has to take first place. You cannot have both at the same time, which of course does not mean that it has to be one or the other, just that one has to be the most important. You can have philosophical elements in a thriller, but they have to be part of the plot. Take the Da Vinci Code for example, where the whole story about Jesus and the Last Supper is part of the plot. But there is not much character development.
I hope David Fincher will make another Thriller Movie like Panic Room.
Stunning work as usual Tyler! You're a great inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
"7500" great movie! the whole thing in a planes cockpit!
Always love your videos! Great, new explainer animations/graphics in this one!
This is seriously so fun to watch!! How about 'How to Write' other genre?
Great breakdown of a common writing pain point Tyler. Thanks for this.
Tyler, this was an excellent video. Thank you for posting/creating.
I was just thinking about thrillers um and you publish this. Crazy
Hey Tyler, just want to say your videos help me a lot so much but is okay if you can do a video on how to Subvert Expectations successfully?
This came at the perfect time for me
Tyler thank you so much!
Thank you Tyler!
Keep up the good work!
And as Ernest Hemingway said: your easy reading makes damn hard writing for me!
Looking forward to contrasting this with Max Landis' "Measures" theory
👍🏻1st like nd Watch❤️🔥
Hey man I'm a big fan of your work and I've learnt a lot from you about screenplays and story creation. Could you make a video about how to write a love story or something of a romantic nature? Thank you :)
Can you do a similar video for the mystery genre?
For that its usually someone you always least suspect.
can you please make a video on how to write action scene
I enjoyed Hush, which fits this style
Hey Tyler can you make a video on how to write for tv like should each episode for tv be written, not formulaic, but close to Harmons story circle? or is tv different than film? and how do you balance time with a cast of many characters? shows like game of thrones walking dead, breaking bad, ozark all jump around quite a bit but balance and develop characters really well. I could use another head in trying to breakdown how they develop characters while also building towards the main goal.
Doesn't save the cat call it "monster in the house" genre
Ahahahaaha, I remember that passage
Not exactly. Monster in the house is about a creature that kills its own creator and where the setting is primordial and should be a single small well defined place. Here Tyler is talking about contained places, aka « huis clos », which is very similar to theatre or stage play. Contained is tough and relies a lot on entries and exits, and/or alternatively all the great thing Tyler talks about in this video.
@@Fred_l_l_ that's why i posed it as a question. I was confused too.
What i remeber reading is--that the conflict/antagonist exists in a contained space and the protagonist has to save himself/others.
Coz i remeber the book gave the example of jurassic park.
So is jurassic park a contained thriller or a monster in the house?
@@m.mishra9133 well. I’d say that a monster in a house (or an island) fits Jurassic Park. In Panic Room or Room there is no monster per se. And a monster is an antagonist, sure, but not a conscious person with an arc. So I’d definitely consider Monster in the house a type of contained movies. So, a monster in the house is often contained and should be (gives the example of Arachnophobia that is not contained and hence failed as a monster in the house movie). On the other hand, a contained movie is definitely not always a Monster in the house movie.
I hope I explained myself clearly.
@@Fred_l_l_ That does make sense. The Room is a good example.
Thanks 👍👍👍
This is great explanation and good info. However, I've watched your channel and learned the "Dan Harmon's Story Circle", and the question I have is, how can you incorporate the story circle to a contained thriller?
Nice topic
I clicked on this SPECIFICALLY hoping you’d bring up “Panic Room.”
Would you call the netflix film "the platform" a contained thriller?
I would
Ys defenetly
Short Film finished.
So What do I do Now?
Talk about THE HATEFUL EIGHT
Once again, awesome video (no surprise there though)! I would love to see you do one on death scenes
Now he‘s talking about genre. Alright.
but what about the central philosophical conflict?
@@jayfolk lmao
@@jayfolk Well honestly write what you want.
@@anthonycorcino6700
I think he was just joking because Tyler Mowery is known for explaining the “Philosophical Conflict” in all of his videos.
Wow
Would you consider the collection a contain thriller?
neat
9:12 what was the name of that movie i searched lock but couldnt find it
Snowpiercer
Ok
What is the movie at @1:08 ???
Clue (1985)
@@H5Fredux Thank you so much :)
Hey, Tyler, what apps do you think best for screenplays? i’ve been searching for it and still no idea, pls answer this question
I just watched that new film "Run" on Hulu and it does all of this wrong in my opinion. Tension doesn't build slowly enough and it's overacted and fairly simple. It ended up being a less interesting Gypsy Rose story.
CUBE. :)
Yoooo
Sleuth just 2 dudes and a house
This guys' timing...
No
?
Now I feel like sometimes his abit too much. Like into philosophical conflict. There are movies which has done great with not much of philosophical conflict, still has but not as much as he says. Sometimes we just have to get entertained and enjoy while also learning. With great conflicts also.
