kingdom hearts 2 was a huge part of shaping me into the person i am today -- i see a lot of myself in sora, and it made me realize that being an earnest, over-the-top sort of person was okay! it also cemented video games as a significant part of my life and identity, and it will forever stay in my heart :'o) persona 5 royal, paper mario: thousand year door, and okami are another few that will have a permanent place in my 3x3 grid
i'm extremely impressed at how succinct you made this, i can't shut up when i talk about my favorite games heheh

Legend of Zelda BOTW has to be my number one. That game reignited a love for video games that had been lost for a long long time and sitting down with my switch in college when I finally got the game 3 years after it came out felt like I was coming home. I love and adore that game so much

Man, same! It's such a nice game! My family didn't have any type of console when I was growing up and my parents weren't very into letting us get many computer games, either, so when I bought a switch with some summer job money while in uni 2017, BOTW was my first actual console game 😄 It blew my mind and I was completely engrossed the rest of that summer, and have since played it through a million times :'D

Sims 1 and mario 64 are also games i feel like they had an influential impact on me growing up. they were also, surprisingly, both the games that got me into playing video games (sims 1) and nintendo (mario 64). what a sweet video, that was fun to watch!

Ah man. Your story about the early days of Minecraft made my heart lurch. I don't play many multiplayer games, and MC was my first experience playing with a larger group of friends. That feeling of shared discovery and freedom is SO distinct. The fact that I still feel that way when I play with my siblings (there's so many updates to keep up with haha) is a testament to the game's brilliance.

The other 8 would have to be: Pokemon Diamond, Twilight Princess, Kingdom Hearts, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Super Mario Sunshine, Star Wars: Empire at War, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Dr. Mario (So Nintendo heavy haha)

    1. Super Mario Bros Wii - definitely my most played game of all time, the best memories attached of playing with friends and family.
    2. Legend of Zelda: BOTW - the game that’s getting me back into gaming. Still in awe of how amazing it is.
    3. Club Penguin - has to be in here as I was completely obsessed from the ages of 9-12.
    4. The Sims 2
    5. Animal Crossing Wild World
    6. Minecraft
    7. Fireboy and Watergirl - so many memories of playing after school with my brother

@@rincross7454 I’m so glad you replied! This game was so impactful for me also. Kind of indescribable. I feel a little silly saying that, but it was an irreplaceable experience.
It seems to live in its own secret corner of the world, which makes it more special, but is also kind of frustrating in a way. I want everyone to be able to play and experience it, but it’s sort of hard to put into words how amazing it is.

I don't think I could come up with nine, I'm not a very big gamer. But the most influential for me were Minecraft, Sims 3, Spore, Nintendogs (my first ever game), Moshi Monsters, Club Penguin, and Kinect Sports. Some of my favourite childhood memories were coming home, ripping off my uniform, and running straight to the PC to play these games until dinner. I remember when I found out my rabbit had been put down I was playing Minecraft and didn't even look up from the game (that's slightly horrific and unhealthy yes but it shows how devoted I was.) My family and I recently discovered Kinect Sports again on my old Xbox 360 and we've been bowling and playing darts nonstop. So even now I still have fun with these games. Games never die unless you let them.

I feel PJ's passion for these games so much, unfortunately I haven't been able to play and discover as many games for a while now with uni, but I've recently started picking it back up again and god did I miss it. I spent my kid and teenage years being shaped by all the games I played. Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda's Skyward Sword come to mind as the most prominent ones that I still treasure to this day, having played it several times with my brother when we were younger. Hollow knight is one of the first games that I played in recent years that got me back into gaming again. Super, super fun to be doing this again :)

I’m a lot younger than pj so this is gonna look a little different
Undertale: reintroduced me to gaming in my tweens, made me closer to the people around me
Night in the woods: the vibes were life changing, think my personality is at least partly influenced by Gregg
Super mario galaxy: played it with my older brother, the music, the landscapes was/is amazing
Spiderman ps4: made me fall in love with spiderman and superheroes and made me get into super hero comics
Arkham asylum: made me check out batman comics and the dc universe and now it’s a huge part of my life
Minecraft: many good memories playing with my sister, my cousin and friends
Breath of the wild: it’s breath of the wild what more can i say
Mario kart both ds and later versions: played it with my family a lot
Hades maybe because it’s one of the first games i have played independentaly and Zagreus is kind of a role model to me

*Pokémon X*. It gets bashed a lot as the start of lazy Pokémon games (which, understandable) but it was the first Pokémon game I ever touched and I quickly fell in love with the franchise. I spent so many hours of my life filling out the dex, and eventually trading and breeding to find the perfect stats for competitive battling. Definitely gets a lot of points for nostalgia.
*Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (DS version)*. I was obsessed with this game as a child. I was so good at the dream snowboarding, I would force my friends to watch me so I could show them the shortcut that I thought made me the coolest person ever. And that's not even to mention the story mode, which I spent countless hours exploring and trying to complete.
*Fireboy and Watergirl*. I used to beg my cousin to play this simple free online game because it was a way I could work together with someone to accomplish the goal. In a way it was my first multiplayer game, and since I hadn't been exposed to much of the internet, I was entranced.
*Minecraft*. I can remember the first time I heard about it, from the cousin I already mentioned. At that time the game was very small still, with only zombies to worry about (nothing like the soon-to-be warden that already haunts my nightmares), but enough to terrify a ten or so year old me. Over the years I would look forward to my weekly visit with my Grammy, because she would let me play Minecraft on her computer. My cousin would come over at the same time and we'd spend hours sharing the controls, building massive prisons for every mob, and doing our best to figure out how to play survival. In a way I really grew up with this game.
*The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess*. I cannot stress enough how much of a masterpiece this game is. I hold it so dearly to my heart. My close friend through elementary school introduced me to this series and this game in particular was just... Ours. It was all we'd talk about, we'd roleplay the characters at recess and at home. Out of everything on this list this is one of the games I feel has impacted me the most.
*New Super Mario Bros Wii*. This and Mario Kart are the only games I can remember playing with my family (who aren't really a fan of video games in general). Mario is such a fun and welcoming series (even if I had to ask my dad to beat the final levels for me), that I look back on it with very fond memories. This game in particular brought me a lot of laughter.
*The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of the Wild*. Again with Zelda, but the amount of love in my heart for this game is beyond words. This took a series I already loved and made it immersive in a way that completely occupied every ounce of free time I could spare. It's a recent game, but I'm still in a stage of my life where I'm still being easily shaped by what I encounter, and BotW was so, so inspiring for me. It made me curious about 3d animation and game design as a whole, topics I'm currently exploring that fall under the umbrella of digital media design.
In the end I could only name seven. New games were somewhat rare for me growing up, and once I found one I loved I fixated on it and didn't give myself much time to experiment with others. There are tons of games I've since played and enjoyed, but none strike me as games that shaped who I am like the ones I've listed.

    4. Super Mario World
    5. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    6. Mega Man 2
    7. Space Invaders (Atari, I think the first game I ever played at the neighbor girls' house)

Luigi is Missing, Dr. Mario, Bubble Bobble
Barbie Team Gymnastics (PC), Designers World, Sims Castaways
Nancy Drew The White Wolf of Icicle Creek, Minecraft, Sims 4
The first 3 were the ones I'd stay up late playing on the 64, or playing with my siblings. Bubble Bobble was one I had friends over to play and we had a notebook with the codes all the way up to Level 99. Barbie Gymnastics was the first real game I played on the PC, Designer World was one of the ones you plugged into the TV and played via remote and I played it for hours every night after my siblings went to bed. Sims Castaway was my first game on the DS. Nancy Drew was *my* game on the Wii and I'd play it for an hour each night till I did somethng out of order and couldnt complete it anymore 😅. Minecraft was one of the first games I reconnected with my brothers with when they became teens, and one of the first I could play online with friends during pandemic. And the Sims 4 has just genuinely become an escape during the pandemic and also not being where I want to be in life yet.

These are great games and I really love the way you explained how each game was special to you. I was always a video game kid, too. We had a Sega Genesis, which felt like the poor mans version of the SNES that everyone else had, but Sonic was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Then my brother and I saved up our birthday money and money from shovelling snow and moving lawns for like 2 years and got an N64 and I played that thing nonstop for like 10 years haha. Since I only really hung out with other girls, most of my friends stopped playing video games by high school but now I'm 31 and to this day I still spend most of my time playing and... now I play with my son :) I feel like I'm a pretty cool parent because I know all the games 😎

Well, since other people are doing it. I may as well write down my own list of nine games. Not all of them are 'influential' exactly, but I still love them all the same as I have fond memories of them. (It's okay if you disagree with some of them from this list, BTW. These are just some of my personal favourites.)
    1. "Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped" - My very first console game that I've ever played.
    2. "Banjo-Kazooie" - My favourite Nintendo 64 game.
    3. "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" - My favourite Nintendo Switch game.
    4. "Persona 5" - My favourite PS4 JRPG. (It helped me expand upon my own gaming horizons.)
    5. "Fire Emblem: Three Houses" - My first real experience with the "Fire Emblem" series, outside of "Super Smash Bros."
    6. "Code Vein" - My second favourite PS4 JRPG. (Though it maybe frustrating sometimes, I still love it. Especially for Yakumo Shinonome, who's my personal favourite character from that game in particular.)
    7. "Tetris" - My favourite puzzle game. (I currently have "Puyo Puyo Tetris" on my Nintendo Switch.)
    8. "Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony" - My favourite installment in the "Danganronpa" series. (Even if there are some aspects of it that are 'controversial'.)
    9. "Hades" - My favourite Indie game (that I've played on the Nintendo Switch).

The first Kingdom Hearts game would definitely be on my list. I came home from school one day as normal. When I got home my mum surprised me and my brothers by buying us a brand new ps2 with two games, Ratchet and Clank and Kingdom Hearts. While Ratchet and Clank was quite a fun game, there was just something about Kingdom Hearts that I absolutely loved. It drew me in. It look me several years to actually make progress and finish, but it was a lot of fun. I adored the living heck out of the disney and final fantasy crossover!

honestly i expected at least an Earthbound mention cuz how i think PJ seems like the kind of person that was really inspired by it; like the quirky humor with the weird super creative ideas PJ has, have kind of the same vibe. it just surprised me is all, but i guess PJ can definitely have ended up with a similar vibe to Earthbound without having ever touched the game, just by coincidence

My Top 9 games that influenced me in some way:
Pokémon Heartgold : My first pokémon game and the game that made me a pokémon fanatic
Pokémon Platinum : The second pokémon game I ever played which also has a big place in my heart
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn : Underrated. It's probably the single best game I've ever played and I would highly recommend it
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time : So many twists in the story and I cried at the end and I love it for making me cry
Pokémon Ranger Guardian Signs : Can we please get another ranger game where we can ride on the backs of legendary pokémon again. PLEASE.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild : Like most people I love this game, It's such an amazing experience and so fun to explore every inch of it.
Animal Crossing : My childhood. My first of them which I played was wild world. I remember having one of these games while I was taking lessons, I think it was guitar lessons. I remember I would play animal crossing with the other people in the class while waiting for it to start or during a break.
Club Penguin [both DS games] : I just love these games, they have a special place in my heart
Galaxy of Games Kids Collection : I used to play this on our computer all the time as a kid, I would spend hours playing all the different games on it.
    Honorable Mentions:
Pokémon X and Y, Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass, Mario And Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games [Story mode], Kid Icarus Uprising, Pokémon Black and White [2], Nintendogs, Sonic Rush Adventure, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, Rhythm Thief and the Emperors Treasure
I will say it was hard to pick which ones to make my top nine

my tope nine games: 1.) the sims: this was the first game that I bought by myself, I had the power to do whatever I wanted, and it was fun. 2.) Minecraft: I remember the late nights calling my best friends and playing it all night, the drama, the tears head, the screams from mining, playing it when we should have been in school, so many memories. 3.) sonic: I don't know which sonic I had but it was on a old gameboy, it introduced me into gaming tbh 4.) Tony hawk game: also on a old gameboy, and it was fun to play. I wanted to skate but I was too young lol. 5.) Mario bros: again, on a old gameboy but I loved this game so much. I always got stuck on levels and had to get my dad to help me beat them ha. 6.) CS GO: I just started playing this game but I like playing it with the bots, I can't do it with real people ha. 7.) don't starve together: another game I played with my friends for hours, a time where the 4 of us were all friends and no one hated each other, that only lasted a few months at best:(. 8.) guitar hero on the Wii: i love this game, the music, the characters you can customize, and how I feel like im in a really low quality band. 9.) Wii play: I played this game so much, the bull-riding game, the tank game, fishing, match the mii game, I really played this everyday in the summer in 2nd grade, its a game I hope I never lose cause I will be sad. there are more game but these just have the most meaning:)
