    Hi. I've got very few Sarracenia as my garden is so small. Last year I only got one flower on one plant. Is it possible to pollinate a flower with its own pollen?
    This year the same plant is growing two flowers. If the answer to my above question is no, is it possible to pollinate a flower from a different flower on the same plant?
    I'm really not worried about specific hybrids. For now I'd just be really happy to collect any seeds at all.
    Thank you for any help.
    Simon.

    Thank you for explaining this in detail. Can you clarify something? I only have one pitcher plant and it has two flowers developing. Are these plants self-pollinating? Or would I need another pitcher plant to get seeds?

      I'm glad the video was helpful. You can use the pollen from the same flower to pollinate same plant. This would be an F1 cross. We've done this numerous times with success. We plan to redo this video this spring in 4K, so stay tuned!

    Wow thank you, I have some stunning flowers from my sarracenia hybrids, one started flowering late april uk and produces upto 4 foot pitchers in red vein 😍😍😍
    My vfts are in flower and learnt that vsts can self pollinate with no problems but self pollinating pitchers will lead a down grade from its genes, where as cross pollinating from another cross wull lead you inyo making a mutation possibly better than parent plant?

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you for watching! We haven't seen a degradation with F1 crosses. In fact, in some cases, we've seen improvements in vigor and color with some F1 crosses. It's just throw of the dice on how their genes are distributed.

      @@SarraceniaNorthwest Thanks for reply.
      I did read that it was much better for different Saracenia plants to cross breed rather than self pollinate but sadly I didn't realize you should do this within 3 days of flower for best pollinating strength.
      Hopefully I had a busy bee doing its work between me boo flowers but I doubt it :(.
      Im gonna say 4 years since last time I seena bee :(.
      Ive seen 2 wasps this year, don't see many butterfly's, in the 80s and 90s they were rife mate.
      Mme Grandad would be out every morning picking caterpilers off his crops, they lil mo fos man, give em a inch they take a mile lol.
      Basically Insecticides have been killing off all nature pollinators and soil organisms, these are the organisms that evolved our world for billions of years and we are killing them by buying products by probably green earth brainwashed people who want to save the earth!
      I adore Carnivorous plants I read that VFTS do well inbreeding?
      I think the problem with Saracenia inbreeding is its kinda like back breeding like how sort of how nasty people tried to inbreed a certain breeds to create the XL Bully to be as close to the Greek and Roman fighting dog called the Molossian hound.
      Inbreeding dogs can cause alot of problems!
      Sorry I got a bit of point lol
      Did you know many insects see in ultra violet, google pitcher plants ultra violet :D

    Can I put the pollen on the flower where it came from and selfbreed that plant?

    I think I missed the window of pollinating.... I found your video a little too late. I started pollinating at the time the pollinating pistils were starting to fall off..... was i too late?? I'll keep on applying the pollen.

    Question: If I only have a single sarracenia flower, can I self-pollenate it with it's own pollen? I know they don't naturally do this, but would it work when done by hand?

    That was a fine video. How about doing one on the Venus Flytrap. Maybe you could show your current stock of these plants and cover the ways you propagate them in order to expand your supply. I think that would make a very interesting video as well.

    You should do a segment on expertvillage. You're way more informative than the person currently on expervillage about CPs.

    Plants are often made to flower by modifying the length of the night cycle.

    but i wonder do i need to put water inside the plants ? like lets call it beaks haha !

    do i have to put water inside ?
    Thankss

      Normally if the plant has a lip covering the tube then I don't want water in side them. But if it's got a lip that's out woulds then it needs a bit. As it will collect rain water.

    • @TheDkdazo
      @TheDkdazo 9 років тому

      Maybe so. I not been growing them to long. But I know a lot about them. Plus it makes sense as if it rains in the wild the lips on them are covering the tubes like a umbrella. I got 3 types one has a lip out woulds to catch rain water. I hope it helps! Sorry about the spellings and your plant. let me know if it works out for you. It's working for me. Plus thay need a lot of light.

      let/make them go dormant in the winter. keep them watered, but not wet or else you run the risk of rot
