  • Let me introduce you to Tom Murosky, a Linux content creator with multiple channels, the most popular being Switched to Linux. He's been on UA-cam for years, uncontested in his misinformation about open source, hate of queer individuals, and misrepresenting Christians-until today.
    Murosky only cares about injecting his political views into all of his content and has attempted (unsuccessfully) various ways to take down my content, including through Proton, UA-cam flagging, and attempting to leverage his influence to rally creators by his side. His community is blatantly transphobic, homophobic, and adheres to extremist right-wing content and Christian nationalism. There is no negotiating with this man.
    All proceeds of this video will be donated to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They fight for your digital civil liberties and for your rights. supporters.eff.org/donate/joi...
    Shout out to ‪@niccoloveslinux‬ , who helped give much of this video direction and organization and to ‪@TechHut‬ for describing his experience.
    A special thanks to my Christian friends who have helped a great deal in the theological aspects, the resources, as well as physical Bibles and commentaries. Check out ‪@PrestonSprinkleRaw‬ for information about how churches respond to queer communities. He has the Murosky Stamp of Approval™ after all!

It's like you're trying to hide counter-claims that might have merit because they're inconvenient to your story. I'm an atheist, but I'd say the "love the others" part can be tricky. You take it as meaning that the christian person should accept others instead of condemning them. But in reality if we really care about someone we tend to contradict them if whatever it is they do isn't coherent with our own understanding of what is "right". We don't just accept everything. For instance, a father that always accept whatever his son does would be considered a bad father, someone who just doesn't care about his son. And who, being capable of foreseeing the consequences, would let his best friend ruin his life with bad decisions? Sometimes love can be indistinguishable from hate. Think about all those teenagers who get mad at their parents when contradicted or prohibited of doing something, they angrily scream things like "you don't care about me".
    I'm not saying the guy you criticized in the video loves queer people. What I'm saying is: as long as another person has a different point of view of what is "right" and your behavior doesn't fit with his view, he will criticize and contradict you, that is, provided he loves you enough (maybe also if he loves someone else enough and he doesn't want your "bad" behavior encouraging his beloved ones). And given that people usually do have different opinions of what is "right", and they commonly love one or more other people, we can expect that the act of criticizing/condemning other people behavior will never cease to exist. We all judge the others by our own books.

    Why would I want to use a package that isn't tested by my distro?

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin  4 місяці тому +6

      Because some distros are really out of date (Debian, Ubuntu, etc). You need to use a Flatpak (or Snap) because that's the direction the world is going in. Very rarely does a maintainer actually help package for a distro. Chromium became a Snap because Debian was really bad at updating it for years (still is). LibreOffice became a Flatpak on RHEL distros because packaging was wasting too much developer time. Consider the official package from the maintainer first. Most distro packages are completely unofficial because they may have been built differently or introduce unforeseen problems. See OBS on Arch and Bottles on Fedora on what NOT to do.

    The EFF has done good things in the past but they have more recently supported a harrasment website (under the guise of "free speech") that went after minorities and didn't like that Cloudflare kicked them off. Before that they also defended NFT's for some weird reason. I can promise there are Christians (like me) that support the LGBT+ community and would like to see them have donations, they need a lot of financial help.

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin  2 місяці тому

      The complicated part is (part of their argument) Cloudflare owns at least 25% of the entire internet. The reason they have pushed for complete free speech in platform holders is both the EFF and Cloudflare are aware of the precedent that would be set if they followed through (see what they did to alt-right websites or imageboards, Substack employs a similar policy). When it comes to Joe schmoes like you and me, that's different. Realistically, we don't carry that same weight and they try to distinguish between platform holders and individuals. STL has problems, but his issues don't have much to do with freedom of speech.
      On the financially supporting the LGBT+ community, I did read from a few Christian-adjacent organizations, but they do not endorse marriage or sex changes. I don't know what your faith background is, but the majority view would likely contend with giving money to a queer charity. I linked the books in the blog post. Thank you for the comment and hope it helps.

    I watch neither Traf nor STL on the regular, I actually came here from Nicco's recent shoutout and this is the first video I'm watching.
    That all said, something I feel that should be brought up more about the (let's be kind and say) dissent toward openSUSE and elementaryOS's respective beliefs is the idea that one could fork the respective codebases and make your own "apolitical" derivative distro. Linux, and by extension FOSS in general, is arguably the epitome of "having your own cake and eating it too". There's a reason Sneedacity exists, regardless of what you think of the motivation regarding its existence.
    That said, I'm probably gonna see what elementary OS 8 is like once that's available for end-users.

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin  4 місяці тому +2

      Sneedacity is a joke because it never received an update since the initial release. The problem with these forks like these is they are just protest forks. That's why Mint's devs are so slow to respond to meaningful change--they are too busy protesting Canonical's latest shenanigans. I use GrapheneOS, but I acknowledge their moderation is terrible and their main dev is (ironically) insecure enough to attack others. Hyprland is fine too despite its similar controversies to STL, but the thing that worries me more is Vaaxry still makes the majority of commits and where would the project be if he wasn't around? I think I justify those in my head is both GrapheneOS and Hyprland provide something to the world that genuinely helps people; STL does too rarely. However, GrapheneOS/Hyprland will never single you out specifically nor can their software target you for harm; the problem is STL can and does. Software protesting rarely works, we've seen it time and time again, so it's better in my mind to make people aware. Long response, but I hope it helped.

    • @HUNT3RdotME
      @HUNT3RdotME 4 місяці тому

      @@Trafotin Fair enough. Only reason I brought it up was that it is at least an option, even if being done in protest makes its fate inevitable. Plus, it could make a nice litmus test in that they could do more than just complain about "the gays and transes ruining Linux" or whatever -- not just in the fork itself, but whether or not they'd actually maintain it. Still, given the track record of "apolitical" vs "political" forks lean towards the latter being more maintained (thinking about Prism Launcher as a particular example), I see your point and I concede... for lack of a better term. 😅
      Also, since you brought up Hyprland, we're probably gonna find out the answer to that question if Vaaxry's recent call-to-action post foreshadows anything...

But Switched to Linux reviews them by opening Discover and he says "This is Discover." and spends half the video doing this with the apps that are the same on every Plasma DE. i disagree with people saying bad stuff about minorities or being hostile to them, and i am all for an inclusive community. But simply stating that wayland is not ready for production is NOT TOXIC, but just a fact. When i use it on my machine with arch linux and KDE plasma and my NVIDIA GTX 1060 then it is buggy! simple VLC playback does not work. KDE Plasmoids (the little mini applications in the task bar like clock etc) will randomly freeze so that i need to restart the kde shell.
    clip board does not work when copy pasting between software, discord is extremely laggy, codium IDE needs special setup to not be laggy, and it cannot run 2 instances at the same time (will crash when attempting to start a new one).
    I know that wayland is the successor for linux desktop, and when i realease open source software then i make sure to support it. but right now, as of the making of this video, wayland is simply not ready for production and that is simply stating a fact! And this is not just my opinnion, Valve Steam OS for the brand new steam deck also still uses X11, because most games do not support X11.
    And i really disagree with saying that people who do not want to use wayland just yet are toxic, i am not toxic, and i am constantly trying out wayland from time to time to find out if it is good enough already, but when someone asks me about weird bugs whilst using their desktop enviornment then the first thing we will try out is switching back to x11, and most of the time this will solve the problem. Wayland simply is not ready deal with it.

      First off, I understand how you feel and want to be clear up front, there's a clear difference between you and STL-you actually bothered to describe in technical detail why Wayland isn't ready for you. However, I never stated criticizing Wayland is toxic behavior, Murosky happens to be toxic. Remember "correlation does not equate causation." As a content creator, I am held to a more serious standard of recommendation and in my experience with "normal" people, nobody knows or cares that they are using Wayland. It's fine you have your opinion, but please listen to the video or re-read the blog post if it wasn't clear. Also, please consider using a rolling release version of KDE. 5.27 and 6 are making major Wayland bug fixes and pushes and X11 is on its way out.

    Yes, you could say that FOSS was always "political". But is the best move for FOSS projects going forward really not to try to at least *try* to be less political, but instead actively become even more political in a single, ideological direction?
    It seems better overall for the FOSS community in the long run to be as neutral as possible while keeping some basic policies on politeness instead of treating legitimately controversial ideas (e.g. systemic racism, DEI, "trans women are women", etc.) as incontrovertible truths. It serves very little practical purpose except to further polarize the FOSS space and alienate more people. I see zero evidence that baking any of these into official policy is necessary to create a polite and welcoming environment where people can be productive.
    IMO it is better for these projects to cast the net as widely as possible. "Equal participation" does not require a policy of "keep your mouth shut and never contradict our sacred truths or we'll kick you out," that's absurd. Just let whoever wants to contribute do so, regardless of their political beliefs, and have a common sense policy about politeness (and yes, by that I mean a policy against deadnaming/misgendering would probably be for the best. Just like Jesus said in the bible, lol. 🙂)
    But hey like you said, if people want to make their own weird FOSS echo chambers, they are certainly free to do so... just giving my opinion on what I think would benefit such projects the most.

    When true and unadulterated communication stops, wars start, genocide kicks off, people die (sometimes in the inside first). It doesn’t cultivate life.
    I switched to OpenSUSE after dabbling with multiple distros because of your video "Linux Distros I CAN'T Stand!", because of this I tend to default to Linux as my daily driver instead of Windows. It helped me find a stable and easy enough distro to finally switch over away from running Windows most of the time. So thank you for that rant! LoL
    Thank you Trafotin for making this, it helped me think about how I can be more sympathetic/empathetic to, for lack of a better descriptor, "rainbow people" as a Christian. Even if someone believes that "stuff" is linked in different ways to sin or at least the affects of sin in people's lives, HOW someone communicates to such people matters as just as much as the message.
    I am a straight white male redeemed by Christ reformed Christian (like R. C. Sproul), and in reformed Christianity the technical aspects of "being right" are important. This is to prevent errors in theology (the math/science of Christianity) from growing into things deadly to the Church. Though communication of "what is right" and correction therein MUST be done with love in a non-dismissive manner, especially to those outside the church.
    Today's environment has gotten so very political and tribal that it seems to be way too easy to "sacrifice" or dismiss others in conversations or over their struggles that we might not understand. Paul definition of "love" in 1st Corinthians 13 is a good place to start. It defines what "love" is (especially in communication) as apposed to what it is not to give a good mirror to judge our own actions.
    A while ago I watched a video, which you can see for free, called "Such Were Some Of You". Its title is a reference to the lives that Paul's brothers and sisters used to live, some in the "rainbow-world". Lives that because of Christ they live no-longer. It helped me see into what was a foreign world to me and some of the struggles therein. I recommend watching it wherever someone falls on the sexual/political/whatever spectrum.
    So thanks for your work Trafotin, it IS appreciated.

      One thing I find problematic about this talk is the approval of conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is unscientific, has abused queer people, and is a vehicle for cult behavior in churches. It's one thing to declare gay marriage a sin in the Christian context, but this pastor goes as far to refer to queer identity as a "lifestyle." Being queer is not a "lifestyle," it's how that person is. Sprinkle brings this up in numerous talks because most churches have not adapted their message to properly address queer people respectfully. I appreciate the comment, but I watched the sermon and was disappointed. Note Sprinkle still refers to non-heterosexual marriage as sin, but plays on level terms with queer Christians.

      I've been having difficulty trying to get this to post (I'm new to commenting on UA-cam and its quirks), so if there are multiple cloned comments... sorry? [Figured it out? It was because I was referencing another channel where the film could be located?]
      My apologies but I think I misspoke by not being specific enough as I think we are talking about two different videos. The video I was referring to is a documentary as well as an interview, not a sermon. It is the 2014 film called "Such Were Some of You" that is about 2 hr 9 min long. It covers the testimony of those who turned to Christ.
      There is also a subtle but important point in the film that the overall goal should not be to "become heterosexual" but rather to turn to Christ, and that a consequence of that which outflows from loving Him is that He will, given time, turn one away from what someone was. If someone only seeks heterosexuality alone, especially apart from Christ, it is sort of missing the point and is a losing battle.
      Hope that helps, and again thanks for the work you do Trafotin. You seem to be someone that tries to give people a fair shake. God bless.

    28:53, I find this ironic really, I know God said they're an "abomination" but he didn't say that for the sake of hate, I suspect he only really did so so he could highlight the evil in us all that we might see how badly we need his help. After all, he already said long before that to "love thy neighbour" and then through his avatar Jesus Christ elaborated on that with the tale of the good samaritin (I've forgotten how that's spelt, don't mind it). As a side note for those who struggle to understand how God can be both himself and his son Jesus Christ, remember that Jesus is the *WORD* of God, meaning God must be the very essence of information. For example, if I were to delete this comment later, would that change the *information* that I posted it to begin with? No, of course not, no matter how many records of information are destroyed it will not change the information itself. That is what God is and also why he referred to himself as"I AM", because he just is, always has been, always will be. That is also part of why he insists we put him before all others, because if you can't trust the judgment of information itself, how can you trust your own judgment?
    **Edit:** btw if it wasn't obvious I myself am christian. I fully rely on the sacrifice God made through Jesus Christ at the cross to pay for my sins/evils. Not an excuse to sin/do evil, just a guarantee that when my flesh finally fails me, my spirit which exists only as information like God's, will be taken to heaven by God, not left to suffer for all eternity in hell. I fully expect the evils in me to be removed prior to entering heaven so that alone is enough reason to let go of past misdeeds of both myself an anyone else around me. Let God deal with who must be dealt with, be it by the police, disease, disasters, or anything else God deems appropriate.

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin  4 місяці тому +1

      A slight correction, referring to Jesus as an avatar is not correct. Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one Triune entity made up of 3 beings. I'm simply pointing out Christians have a way to disagree without resorting outright raging and hatred. God also called Christians to call out other Christians when they sin, yet how come most of them remain silent to Murosky despite the heinous things I showed? He is literally spreading lies that Jesus represents the oppressed white man and that's just false. There are verses in the Bible calling on Christians to call out injustice and this is that time.

    27:41 My take on the religious stuff is that religion doesn't excuse bigotry. It doesn't matter what it says in your religious text. You have freedom of religion but you don't have the freedom to oppress others.
    Modern Christianity (at least in western nations) is NOT an oppressed religion, it cannot be by definition. Modern Christianity in the west is the majority religion and holds state power in America. The statement from the Opensuse person isn't a bad statement and is very accurate. Tom Murosky is a very privileged person and uses his religious texts (the bible) to oppress minorities.
    Just because your bible says you can do something doesn't mean its right. It isn't religious oppression to curtail certain religious practices when those religious practices actually infringe on the freedoms of others.
    I would also like to disagree with the idea that Queer Christians are self-hating or should be self-hating. To me this seems like you are trying to justify queer oppression caused by religion (i hope i am misunderstanding this part because this is very queerphobic if true). Queer Christians realize that certain parts of the bible are simply incorrect (specifically the parts about how you cant practice being gay or marry people of the same sex).

    • @Trafotin
      @Trafotin  4 місяці тому +1

      If you take the time to listen to the interviews Sprinkle does with the queer Christians on his podcast, I hope that it will show that they experience something different and are more convicted to do something different than what most people traditionally associate with queer identity. IMO that's on them, but I wouldn't categorize it as self-hating. In fact, a common point you will see is many of the same queer Christians express their own concern for acceptance in their church communities and experiencing spiritual fulfillment that to them is different and their convictions in seemingly contradictory views. A point Sprinkle tries to make is society (including Christians given how pastors are treated by their congregations as there is the expectation to be married) puts marriage on a pedestal. Some people just wind up single for whatever reason and whether that is a straight relationship or not, single relationships should be celebrated too, not just heterosexual or queer ones. On marriage, I understand that's touchier, but I hope this helped clarify the viewpoint.

    I watched him for a time but every one of his videos either WAS a stream, or has as much scripting as a stream. In my opinion, streams are low quality content compared to a scripted video that GETS TO THE POINT.

      For people not in the know, what STL does is record a livestream, then he goes into video recording mode to record which become the videos, then ducks out of video recording mode to read chat. After stream ends, he edits the videos in UA-cam Studio or in Kdenlive to be their own videos. In STL's defense, that is how he chooses to produce his content and that's his own decision. His opinions on the other hand...

      I would ask that you do not describe someone as "schizophrenic" if they are not schizophrenic themselves. It can be offensive to people who are schizophrenic and I'm pretty sure after hours of watching STL that he is not either.
