Thank you for watching this film. This is a self-funding short film. I was born and raised in Japan and now living In Los Angeles, hoping to make this film into a TV series.
Co-writer and I spent a year writing this story. The stunt coordinator and I discussed it for six months. Actors trained over 3 months. This film was made of everyone's effort and contribution.
My stunt coordinator handed me a wooden sword saying I should know what I'm putting actors to do. It was scary. Imagine the actual weapon swinging around your face. I was fortunate to find Yuwi Kim. She has the looks. She can handle a Japanese sword, and on top of all, she is a fantastic actress. Other actors were amazing as well.
We shot this in LA. Finding a place that looked like Japan in a dry land was hard. I saw a blind woman walking into a trail and asked her questions. Her supporter told me about this place, and we got a permit 10 days before the principal of photography. It was a miracle we were able to make this film in L.A.
Many people asked me why I made a samurai film in English. I have a few reasons.
1) Many people asked me this particular question, but they didn’t ask the same question to 300, Northman, Valkyrie, Gladiator, and Les Misérables. So I wanted to set a new rule that we can also tell the Asian story in English as others do in Hollywood.
2) I needed to differentiate myself from Japanese directors living in Japan, so Hollywood would know I could direct films in English.
3) I wanted to tell the world I know the Japanese culture since I was born and raised in Japan, and I know how to properly tell a story set in Japan to the audience. (I specialize in localization and can convey better than a random subtitles translator.)

監督、役者全員、殺陣師は、日本生まれ、日本育ちでハリウッド映画を作りたい、ハリウッド映画に出たいと海を渡った者です。（ゆいちゃんは、韓国名ですが、日本育ちです）
ハリウッドで製作された、スコットフリー製作の「テラー」の監督をしませんか？と話が来た時に、テレビ局から「彼女は経験が少ないしね、だめ」と言われたことと、ハリウッド映画や、テレビで侍関係が出ると、うーん？？？？って思う事があったので、よし、侍映画を作ろうと思いました。あと、女性を主役にしてみようと思って、このような話を書きました。お恥ずかしながら、「座頭市」に関しては、すっかり忘れておりましたので、ある意味完全オリジナルです…。（完成後友達に言われて、「あ！」と思いました。と言っても信じてもらえなさそうですが😓）
ハリウッド映画作りたくて海を渡ったのに、侍映画？と母親にも言われ、私自身も悩みました。ただ、友達の（白人男性）映画監督に言われたんですが、「田舎の鉱山で働いている白人男の話を、無名の君に監督してほしいなんて思うプロデューサーはいないよ。君は日本人女性なんだから日本の話を書いて作ったら、誰よりもいいものが作れるはずだ」と。それで侍映画を作るために勉強しだすと、楽しくて。自分のルーツだから当たり前なんですけど、作っていてしっくりくるんですね。毎週時代劇を一緒に見ていた時代劇大好き人間の父親が存命の時に製作してたらもっと楽しかったと思います。
時代劇で描かれる侍と当時の本当の侍の違いなどを当時の侍が読んでいた書物を参考にし、また、時代劇のテレビや、映画によって見せ方も違うなど勉強して、自分の国の文化を改めて勉強し、刀の鑑定士（初の日本人以外の鑑定優勝者）の方に刀を教えてもらい、真剣を一つのショットで気をつけて使用しました。
今回、役者さんと殺陣師の方のたくさんの協力をもとにこの映画ができまして、最初、殺陣師の方に役者さんに何をさせようとしているか理解してほしいと木刀を渡され、かかってこられた時、本当に怖かったです。これは、女優さんをトレーニングさせてできる話じゃないと思い、外見も演技力も殺陣もできるのゆいちゃんが見つかったのは幸運でした。彼女はきっと将来大スターになると思います。他の二人の役者さんも演技力、外見、全てが素晴らしかったです。今回役者さんにアクセントを無くしてくださいとお願いしました。大変だったと思いますが、完全にマスターしてくださいました。努力を惜しまず６ヶ月間付き合ってくださり、監督のゴリ押しにも答えてくださり、頭が上がらないです。ゆいちゃんにつけた殺陣は山猿みたいに変わったものですが、マサさんとノブさんには伝統的なものをつけました。と言っても、戦場とかで見る殺すための殺陣なので、居合系ではないですが。だから居合系の殺陣が好きな方には、中国系のアクションに見えるかもしれませんが、全く別物です。
またロケ場所はロサンゼルスの山で撮影しました。こちらも日本ぽい場所を砂漠地帯のロサンゼルスで探すのは困難で、６ヶ月間、時間があれば自分でロケハンをしていました。
そこで、候補地で盲目者の方がハイキングに行こうとしているのを見て、慌てて駆け寄り、いろいろお話を聞かせていただいていると、彼女をサポートしていたハイキンググループのリーダーさんが、この場所はどう？と教えてくださった場所で撮影しました。撮影許可が下りたのも撮影十日前で、撮影ができたのが奇跡の状態でした。
なぜ英語で撮ったの？とよく聞かれますが、理由は以下です。
１）３００や、レミセラブル、グラディエーター、バルキーリなど、外国の話でも英語でハリウッド映画は撮れるのに、なぜか侍映画になると拒否反応が出ます。それは、アジア系だからか、過去に例がないからかわかりませんが、日本の話も英語でハリウッド映画を撮れると伝えたかったため。
２）日本にいらっしゃる日本人監督ではなく、ハリウッド映画を撮れる日本人監督という違いを見せたかったため。
３）私は、ちゃんとした日本文化や、日本のお話を正確に、英語圏の観客がわかるように伝えられると皆さんに知って欲しかったため。
この脚本を書いて、八重というキャラが非常に魅力的で。このまま映画で終わらせるのはもったいないと、共同脚本家のジェームズとテレビシリーズにするためにテレビ用の脚本を書きました。たくさんの観客がいると、スタジオもハリウッドで侍テレビドラマ化して良いと思うかもしれません。

I loved the action scene where she strikes behind her. It totally makes sense that she is (almost) blind and she doesn't have to face the opponent. So well done. This is a great story with so much depth. Please expand into a TV series!

That sequence was brilliant
Funny, because I thought this scene was looking super cool from an entertaiment point of view (it was insanely badass looking), but in parallel I was like: one's reach and range of motion is so much limited towards the back (even when we assume that Yae has really superhuman joint mobility and muscle strength) - so fighting like that still puts the fighter in a disadvantage - but she is so good that even like that she could defend herself and even attack.

This was SO GOOD! When she says "we must stop this cycle of revenge" I was moved to tears by her integrity. Brutality is cheap. Kindness and restraint require strength. Brava Akiko. Encore please.
Indeed, I was moved to tears, as well. The interaction between these two characters could have unfolded in a myriad of ways. But Akiko chose 'humane' over 'humanity'. Blessings upon her and all possible success in her continuing endeavors.
That was the kill shot for me also. 😭

This is one of the best short films I’ve seen on UA-cam. The story and acting was excellent. One of the myriad reasons I am fond of the rich Japanese Culture. My dream is to someday visit Japan. Hopefully, I can meet with a Samurai ghost from the past.

I LOVED THIS, everything was excellent and the acting was so well done. I was in tears by the end. The fighting was incredible I love seeing a woman samurai and how she would fight on the offensive when she had to defend herself. There is so much potential in this story to become a great series.

@@directorakiko It mean a lot to a woman to see effectiveness and proficiency it self defense. In the early part of the 20th century. My Aunt Ola was deaf and blind. She was an incredible person. African American married to a Native American. After he passed away she learned to defend herself. Unfortunately she had a lot of trauma. So my parents made sure us kids knew how to be safe if needed. So I love seeing Yae know what to do and how to do it. I hope her story continues. I'd love to see what other parts of life she experiences. Thank You for your talent its so needed.❤
You must continue this kind of film, not just showing the good quality of doing for the sake of money, but the essence of being good inside.

Fantastic. It's good to see that people still know what a short film actually is. It's not the opening scene of a movie that never gets made. It's not a trailer, a disembodied action scene or a sizzle reel. It is a complete story, with a beginning middle and an end, and this told a really good one, complete with character development and character arcs for both the main characters. Bravo.

I clicked on the vid because I was skeptical to believe that 18 mins will not be enough to display anything and hey it's another blind samurai movie. But every second I spent watching this clip was worth it!!! The choreographer did an amazing job with the fighting scene. With such a small screen time, the actors did a beautiful job making the characters dynamic. You can see Sae grow significantly in the beginning and the end of the clip. The writers did a wonderful job with their selection of lines for our characters. The idea is not new, but watching the clip from start to finish left me the most satisfying feeling. To the crew who created this, big thumbs up and awesome job!!!!

At first I thought maybe this is a just talk kind of short film or totally action. But after 20 seconds into it I was dragged and immersed. The actors are really talented with full emotion and expression. The cinematography, shot angles, close ups are on point with no awkward scene to point out. Well made and well edited. The script is thoroughly think and those details as in permit to have a formal revenge, the insignia of the revenger. I thought, this is a new things for me to learn in an ancient samurai culture. The characters expanded so quickly with the emotions projected by these actors makes me wait for more. I hope this can be made into a full cast movie or series of action packed tv. I love this. Thank you for your great presentation and for your crews and cast. I need this.☺️

This is such a great short. The acting, the script, the fight, the tone of voice everything really. If possible Akiko for any future film try to dub the voices to the environment. Here Japanese voice would have been such a bless, but really that's just a tiny detail. Everyone congratulations for such a short movie. I really enjoy it. Great directing and movie, Kurosawa has a lot to learn from this young lady, had he still been alive. Definitely she has a bright future in movie directing and content creation, the actors were impeccable and captivating. Absolutely Wonderful! A thousand Thumbs Up 👍👍👍.

Thank you. The co-writer and I spent a year writing this story. The stunt team and I discussed for 6 months and actors trained for 3 months. All people helped me. My friend bought kimono and hired a costume designer for me. I got all props from Rakuten and Amazon Japan. And my friend who is a famous appraiser let me borrow the real Katana! Hi Akiko, this movie gave me goosebumbs, something i rarely experience these days. The story is perfect, the actors are excellent, very well trained in kenjutsu and , the katana look authentic (also important to me as a hobby tsukamaki shi). At one moment the hamon of one katana was clearly visible. These are moments that make a movie stand out of the mainstream; the eye of detail and authenticity of the time period. Please make sure, when making a sequel, that you keep this. I would buy the complete series!
