The Mode he mentions is called the "Kamavardini", from the South Indian "72 Melakarta Ragas".
Using Universal Music Theory found in the "Guitar Totality" book, this Mode is listed as 7-Note Scale #54 (5th Mode), or just the 5th Mode of 7-Note #54. Guitar Totality contains All Possible Scales and Modes on the Guitar, using the 12 notes of the Chromatic Scale.

if you start from b2nd, it's a blues scale with a b7th and a maj 7th. the scale has 2 sets of 3 consecutive half steps.

Yeah elsewhere when we were talking about modes Steve said that he basically plays the blues scale and moves it up or down depending on the mode he wants to play. In this instance though Steve just made up a random scale on the spot. All scales are just sounds and if you harmonize them with tertiary or quartal harmony you can use them the same way....with vastly different results which is part of the beauty of music.

Byzantine #11. Some haunting sounds in that one, because of the chordal possibilities with the 2 sets of 3 consecutive half steps

Someone else called it a South Indian Purvi scale. But a name is just something do that you can describe it for other people. You did it best by playing around with it and seeing what the scale sounds like. I wrote a little 16 bar canon with it on Musescore but the piano sound isn't great on it. I'll work with it some more though 😀

You could call it Byzantine #4, since it is a Mode (#11 is a chordal classification). However, that is like calling the Lydian Mode, Ionian #4.
The Mode Steve mentions is called, "Kamavardini" in the "72 Melakarta Ragas". Using Universal Music Theory, found in the "Guitar Totality" book, this is the 5th Mode of 7-Note Scale #54.

@@ModernGuitarHarmonyThe "Purvi" Mode is the 7th Mode of 8-Note Scale #17 (Guitar Totality). This adds a 4th interval to the 5th Mode of 7-Note #54, or "Kamavardini".
