  • I'm Going To teach concepts/exercises from the book The Advancing Guitarist, including 3 ways to play scales, chords made from triads over bass notes, an interval exercise with many variations, & also show 4 types of counterpoint. This book has a ton of ideas, concepts & exercises in it in fact Mick Goodrick the author says there's so many possibilities that he has in his own playing only barely scratched the surface of what's possible & it would take several lifetimes to master it all (& I agree). #theadvancingguitarist #advancedguitarlessons #intermediateguitarlessons #mickgoodrick

    So in this video (even though it was longer than I intended) I still only touched on a fraction of the subjects in this book. If you want me to cover some of the other areas or go more in depth, or like I did with the interval exercise expand on it & show how I would use it, I can. Also I meant to say on the interval exercise you can use any interval & apply the same ideas. Thanks for watching 👍(& If you liked the video don't forget to click like or subscribe I would much appreciate it)

    Parallel Similar Contrary and Oblique. Got it! Love your Oblique Reference to Rock! That's what I'm talking about. 😉 ...also you know that guy Mick Goodrick had a handle on one of the the most f**ked up words in the English language "Pedagogy". ...anyway I'm intrigued by the science behind teaching...glad you pointed this guy out. 👍

      I do think his approach is very effective, But it's also most effective with highly motivated students since you really have to put the work in to learn what he's teaching. For me the hard part about doing these videos (teaching wise) is I really think the most effective teaching is individualized, & another effective tool in teaching is using questions & discussion to help illustrate points & make the students think things through themselves. Which is what I do in private lessons but on video it's just me monologuing & I'm still trying to find the line between putting too much or to little information/explanation in the videos. Like always thanks for your continued support 👍🙂

      totally agree, and I would add it's worthwhile to come back & reread every few years because the reader will probably see things they missed or understand things in a different way as they get more knowledge/experience. Thanks for your comment 👍

    I got this book when I was a kid because of the author's column in I think Guitar School magazine. Way over my head but there was a chapter on single string playing that was immensely helpful in learning the neck.

      yeah there is plenty of stuff to learn in it, & it can be confusing (because he purposely doesn't explain things wanting the reader to figure it out) when looking through it for this video there are still sections that I had to read over a couple times and look at the examples before I got what he was talking about 🙂

      @@ericnaylorguitar The few lessons that I understood really stuck. Even though I don't have time to play much anymore I can still play all over the neck in the keys that are common to heavy metal music. And I "wrote" a bunch of riffs on the various motions. Very cool lesson and thanks.

      the good thing is once something sticks with you like that it will probably always be with you so when you have more time you can always come back to it. glad you liked the video 👍🙂

    Pretty good synopsis of The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick...may he rest in peace. So I followed what you got goin here...Alex Skolnick is awesome seen 'em with Testament Back in the 80's and love their newest release...I never really liked Siberian orchestra but am impressed that Alex did tour with them. So a couple things. I like that 3rd movement combined with scale. Your examples sound good. Does it work for other intervals? I know I'm gonna answer my own question Gonna use 6ths first. ...Upper Structure Chords...so I guess I'm gonna Slash the hell out of a bass note so to speak (Bass Note / Triad) and play every variation of each triad in the selected bass key and see what kinda 9ths 11ths and 13ths I come up with. A light went off with your example of Dmin/C ...
    At the the end about Counter Point... I take it intervals are restricted to key I'm playing in .
    For me, your post is pretty intense but I like it. Thanks for demonstrating excercises, pretty awesome!

      okay, so yeah you can use any intervals I meant to say that (but a lot I wanted to say which is why video ended up so long 🙂) and about the counterpoint you can stay in key, but of course you can also change keys at will or go outside of the key don't restrict yourself just do things because they sound good and that might mean staying in key but it also might not 👍🙂good luck & have fun

    Is there any form of it in tabs?

    • @ericnaylorguitar
      @ericnaylorguitar  15 днів тому

      not that I know of but about 40% of the book is just text with no standard music either, so I think it's a worthwhile book even if you can't read the music part which is usually just showing examples of the concepts. & honestly it would not be as effective in Tab because the concepts are the main part & they are shown fairly bare bones intentionally so that you can interpret them your own way. Tab would just give you one fingering example but many times there are dozens of ways you could finger the same idea. I probably at some point will do another video that covers more of the concepts from the book (& I have covered some of the same ideas in other videos of mine already) thanks for watching 👍
