Spreading the joy and harmony possibilities of the Mick Goodrick Voice-Leading Almanacs and more....
Modern Guitar Harmony's goal is to spread the joy of guitar harmony worldwide for free. We also aim to have guitar players find their unique, original voice on the instrument.
We aim to release a new video and blog post every week so let us know which topics you want to hear about.
Players such as Ben Monder, Randy Roos, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Tim Miller and Tom Lippincott etc all use beautiful and interesting harmonies to get their own voices across to the listener.
Modern Guitar Harmony (MGH) will have some great players contributing videos so make sure to Subscribe to keep up to date.
Through the study of the Mr Goodchord Almanacs and the associated Generic Modality Compression book (by Mick Goodrick and Tim Miller) the guitarist will not only learn much more about the fretboard and harmony but in the process they will discover themselves and their unique voice on the guitar as well

Random Cycles Triplet Etude
Переглядів 193Місяць тому
Here's a fun little etude that I wrote. I wrote out the 6 cycles and assigned them the numbers 1-6 then I wrote out 7 triad types and assigned them numbers as well. Then I used a random number generator to list out the cycles and chord type. I was actually lucky in that this piece ends with a I - V - I which, of course, is a favourite chord progression of JS Bach. Try making up your own random ...

Very good to know. It's by practicing simple exercises that you make the most progress ( at least for me ..... ) 🤣
@@michelnaone9342 Indeed. Start easy and build on that base. Are you practicing anything in particular at the moment Michel?
@@ModernGuitarHarmonyI'm (slowly) exploring volume 1 of the almanacs.
@@michelnaone9342 Great to hear. Are you on the triad or four more chord sections?
woooow :O
@@BrotherBrownMusic makes it easier to transcribe anyway 😁
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I guess some what yeah 😅
I've been working through these as intervals and not thinking about the note names. Bad idea?
This is brilliant Tom-I see why you wrote it for dummies as there's quite a few in the comments 😂
Superb, very melodious.
@@michelnaone9342 They are nice pieces alright. You'll have to learn to read ( which isn't that difficult) 👍
Very nice, the richness of the intervals well used. Are there tablatures in your book? Thank you.
Yes, the compositions are very nice with a nice balance between the intervals. Gilbert's eBooks contain notation only.
How about fixing your audio, it’s awful.
Wash your ears....
Very interesting, thank you. Happy musical new year.
Many happy returns my friend. In another half hour I can do an hour or so of practice. Can't wait 😁 Are you playing today?
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I'm not pro, I play for my pleasure only.
@michelnaone9342 Playing for pleasure is the most important thing. Enjoy!!!
Thank you for the lesson. A thought on the format: if you are only using 6 strings, why not use a 6 string guitar for this lesson?
@@joshmusic9766 Tom only plays that guitar which is an 8 string. Check out some of Tom's other videos, he's a very tasty player. Thanks for your comment.
The game with the tenth is from the Martin Taylor school..It's nice and efficient.
Nice Christmas 😏
Pleasant conversation. I look forward to more.
@@michelnaone9342 Yes, much more to come when time allows!! Thank you Michel!! 😀🎸🎶🙏☀️

@ fab
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing 🙌
Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. Are you a fan of Ben Monder?
@ yeah, I like Monder’s music (and concepts) quite a lot 😅
As a huge Vai fan, I think everything after Real Illusions: Reflections is crap. Sorry.
He’s never ever gonna top Passion & Warfare, but that was a different type of music to his more recent works. I quite enjoyed The Story Of Light, Modern Primitive is an interesting musical outlook on various different stages in his career, The Ultra Zone is a cool record from what I’ve heard of it and I loved some of the songs from Inviolate. It’s all down to taste, and although I’ll be first to admit that some records are better than others, I wouldn’t say that literally everything after Real Illusions: Reflections is crap.
looking forward to it
Yes, so excited about what's coming up 😃
Nice interview, though perhaps too focused on Mick Goodrick. I was hoping that the influence of Ralph Towner on Muthspiel's style of playing, which is huge, would come up but it didn't. Quite important. Too bad. A bit more steering along the way would have allowed to cover more ground. It's the only thing I missed here. Thanks again.
@@cfibanez Thank you for your feedback. We will have another interview with Wolfgang in the future and I will pass your comment onto Mick W. who interviewed Wolfgang. Thanks again for your constructive comment.
Cool chords... great to hear them explained by Ben. And I'm glad I play piano so I can reach those voicings!😅
The Mode he mentions is called the "Kamavardini", from the South Indian "72 Melakarta Ragas". Using Universal Music Theory found in the "Guitar Totality" book, this Mode is listed as 7-Note Scale #54 (5th Mode), or just the 5th Mode of 7-Note #54. Guitar Totality contains All Possible Scales and Modes on the Guitar, using the 12 notes of the Chromatic Scale. 🌎✌🎸🎶
What a fabulous interview with Wolfgang, his command of jazz and classical is just staggering! Thanks for posting!

Hi, may I know which model of telecaster do you use? it looks like an american pro II roasted pine... and which string gauge do you use?
@@antoniofernicola8699 Hi. It's actually a modified Player. I put a Lollar CC pick up in the neck and changed the bridge to a Callaham as it's thicker metal for a warmer sound. I changed the knobs to Roadworn because, well, why not. I also changed the string guide. It's my favourite guitar to play!!
@@ModernGuitarHarmony in fact it has a very pleasant sound
@antoniofernicola8699 Thank you 👍 What model guitar do you play?
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I recently tried the Telecaster American pro II roasted pine for a few days... nice but perhaps a little too loud... in the end I got a double esquire CS which I really like. my ideal sound is the one that Bill Frisell manages to obtain, in particular in the version of Wildwood flower that he plays in the Berkeley church: I think it's the purest sound I've ever heard... and I'd really like to know everything about that telecaster... .ua-cam.com/video/-K-gd2DMY0M/v-deo.html

@@RodWilliams-m7r Glad that you enjoyed it 😃🎸🎶☀️
His explanation and knowlegdge is sublime, abstract but makes sense.
@@jameseastope5562 It took me a little while to realize how good Wolfgang actually is. I had heard a few things from Wolfgang then I heard Live at the Jazz Standard with Mick Goodrick and I was like Ok, that's some serious fire. Did you have a similar experience?
Yes! Looking forward for this intervju.
@@edwarddannenberg5084 we'll be chatting with Wolfgang again in due course. Enjoy the interview!
I always thought Ben Monder was and continues to be so ahead of his time. His contribution to electric guitar and contemporary music is immense. First time I saw him play was in a jazz festival in Colombia with Antonio Arnedo almost 30 years ago. He continues to evolve and explore new musical realms and states of consciousness in music.
My suggestion: link the song he mentions in description.

thanks for doing the interview. this guy is a unique talent on the instrument. Truly astonishing pieces he puts together. Level of complexity and difficulty extremely high.
@@Eliguitar1 Yes, Ben is a true inspiration!! Have you transcribed any of his playing?
I did listened to the entire thing on september 27th in one sitting, it was an extraordinary experience. I absolutely recommend doing that, and it really enhances all the pieces to have them all together like that. Makes every track stronger and creates a one of a kind musical experience.
@@neotrio8795 Unfortunately I don't have that much time but I see what you mean. I like to transcribe Ben's playing in order to find out exactly what he's playing. Some of the stuff is easy to play but playing it at Ben's speed is another level all together!!
"Ataraxia" is a really fine and beautiful winery in "hemel en aarde", Western Cape, South Africa. Their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are strongly recommended.
@@cfibanez ah, heaven and earth. I used to have some 17th century coins from that area.
Thanks for the interview. I liked "Planetarium", but Bleckmann’s colorless falsetto gets quite monotonous, repetitive and tiring, specially in the longer pieces. Save for that, this is really a tour de force recording and a milestone in Monder’s catalogue.
@@cfibanez Definitely a game changer and tour de force for solo guitar. I love the ensemble playing too.

Thank you Modern Guitar Harmony! So nice to hear Mick and Randy together. I studied with both, Mick and Randy in the 1970's. Mick was instrumental in inspiring me to develop a curriculum studying the Therapeutic uses of Sound and Music in order to facilitate relaxation, sleep, altered states and peace. Which led me into 30 years of travelling the world, composing, recording, mastering, and producing lots of amazing music and musicians. Thank you Mick!! And so great to see his legacy continue on. I still have the typewritten initial manuscript he gave me in the 70s which led to his first publication. What a sense of humor!
