Modern Guitar Harmony's goal is to spread the joy of guitar harmony worldwide for free. We also aim to have guitar players find their unique, original voice on the instrument.

Players such as Ben Monder, Randy Roos, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Tim Miller and Tom Lippincott etc all use beautiful and interesting harmonies to get their own voices across to the listener.
Modern Guitar Harmony (MGH) will have some great players contributing videos so make sure to Subscribe to keep up to date.
Through the study of the Mr Goodchord Almanacs and the associated Generic Modality Compression book (by Mick Goodrick and Tim Miller) the guitarist will not only learn much more about the fretboard and harmony but in the process they will discover themselves and their unique voice on the guitar as well

Ben Monder Interview - Modern Guitar Harmony
Who's the maker of your guitar?
Check out Tom's website. All the info on his guitar is there 👍
@@ModernGuitarHarmony Thanks!!
Nice !
Thank you Gilbert. Polyrhythms are very fun 😃
Thank you Tim, it simplifies what can be an overcomplicated subject and as I believe aligns with much of what Joe Pass put forward...thank you for your time and effort posting your videos, all very helpful on my musical journey.
I don't agree that he is gabbling. What he's discussing does require quite a high level of harmonic knowledge and some experience of arranging.
He's gabbling. If he wants to demonstrate these ideas clearly he has to break them down and explain it in a logical manner.
I can understand it no problem. This wasn't a lesson as such but part of a discussion re reharm etc. Tim was very generous with his knowledge and his time.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony You mean a video I have to pay for! In any case, if it's not a lesson but a discussion then one assumes those discussing it with him don't need it explaining either. Otherwise he'd be teaching them in which case it's a lesson.
Yes, the proceeds from the Modern Guitar Harmony Patreon page fund the Deep Dives with these artists. Julian Lage or John Scofield will be next 😃 The Deep Dive with Ben Monder is on the patreon page too. Many more to come 👍
@alfredscoggins3206 you need to get to grips with your basic jazz harmony, son.
Wonderful !!
Such a precious lesson ❤
Thank you!!
This channel is an absolute gem. All the free resources on the site are incredible. Thank you for the great content and teachings!
Thank you! Enjoy and feel free to spread the word. Happy playing!!
not sure what Im missing here. early on the video, going from Cm to Dm to Em, you seem to be playing triads on different string sets. It looks like the CM triad you are playing is the root based triad on first 3 strings, but then move to 1st inversion Dm on strings 2, 3, 4, then you play Em triad 2nd inversion on strings 1, 2 and 3.
At what time stamp is that Bill?
@@ModernGuitarHarmony nm, i figured it out, i was looking at it incorrectly, I'm following you now, thank you!
Absolutely insane.
Modern counterpoint 😃
Ben is insane in the best possible meaning of the word. What a master and a humble and personable guy. However, it is also insane to post a paid lesson with this level of video and audio quality, especially in 2024. I've seen VHS home video from the early 90s in better quality than this. The sound is heavily distorted due to low bitrate, which is a shame in a music instruction video and I have a hard time seeing which pixel is Ben and which is his guitar.
The MGH Blog review of Voice Motion can be found here modernguitarharmony.com/2024/02/29/voice-motion-johannes-haage/
Voice Motion - Melodic Movement Within 3-Part Harmony seems like an excellent book. I'll most likely be purchasing a copy even though I've only scratched the surface of The Almanacs and the 3 volumes of Harmonic Mechanisms. I feel like there's more than a lifetime of work for any and all of these books. If only there were more hours in a day!!! Or perhaps if the average lifetime was tripled I might be able to catch up a little! This new volume seems very well laid out, with concise notation and diagrams of the ideas and concepts. Thanks for a great interview. I'm intrigued by everything that was covered. I particularly liked the idea of taking a chord/harmony through symmetrical patterns. Guess it could be seen/heard as symmetrical modulation...? A nice break from functional harmony. Thanks again... and cheers from Canada.
Hello Glenn! Thank you so much for your comment. Voice Motion is a much better book than the Van Eps books which is only natural since the books were written so far apart. You are right though we need another lifetime but just spending 5 minutes daily with these books will radically change your playing over time. I'm itching to get back and get stuck into this book but I'm in a new jazz duo with few gigs booked over the summer so it's learning new tunes and older tunes in new keys for me for the moment. Yes, the symmetry idea is a good one. This was also covered on the Ben Monder Zoom call. I'll post a link to the MGH blog review of Voice Motion and will pin it at the top of the comments. Wishing you a wonderful day.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony Hi Mick. Thanks for your reply, I really do appreciate it. It does make sense that Voice Motion is preferable to the Van Eps books. The Harmonic Mechanism books are pretty dated at this point. It's great advice to spend a little time each day with these books. One needs to get the concepts in the ears and under the fingers. I'll have to check the Zoom call with Ben Monder if it's still available. I've always been inspired with his interviews as well as his music. I'll also check out the MGH blog review of Voice Motion... although I already know I'll be ordering a copy! Thanks again for all you do for the guitar community! It's great to hear that you're getting gigs with a new duo. Enjoy your gigs this summer... it's important to keep live music going; especially after the lack of them during the pandemic. Take good care. Wishing you all the best.
Excellent ! Thank you for sharing this ! Best Wishes - John
Thank you very much for the work you're doing, it is truly valuable 🙏
Appreciated my friend 👍
I listen to him and it's inhuman. I hear him talk and I see the synthesis of love for the music, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a lot of hard work. Dedication, but very human.
Gosh!! Why that awful reverb? Thanks by the way.
The full video of the Deep Dive with Ben Monder is available on the Modern Guitar Harmony Patreon page. Thanks to Ben for participating!
Ben is all what I look forward to be as a guitarist and composer. What a wonderful man ❤
Ben is great and a very nice guy too! We will do another Deep Dive with Ben so subscribe to stay in touch. Also check out the interview that we did with Ben on this channel. You'll love it 😄
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I am in the Facebook Group, this time I wasn't able to attend due to elections in my hometown. I will check the other interview, hopefully one day I'll get to meet Ben :') - a truly remarkable, wholesome artist.
Where can I see the complete class? Thx!
Hi Isaac. Full video available on the Modern Guitar Harmony Patreon page.
This is a good reminder why knowledge of music theory is useful.
I agree. Music theory and playing by ear are two sides of the same coin. You'll play better with both imo.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony exactly
This reminds me somewhat of a few videos I've seen with Ted Greene playing "Baroque"-ish lines. Tenths are a good place to start exploring harmony without getting it cluttered. A great idea to explore. Thanks!
You're welcome. Plenty of ways to make it jazzy too. Coming up....stay tuned 😀
Thank you very much sir, this was very interesting.
You are welcome 😁🎸🎶☀️
Interesting, I've got my Tele set up exactly the same, with the Charlie Christian (Lollar) pickup. Also same colour, except the neck. Sounds the same though.
What amp do you play it through Tom. I have an Vox AC15C1 but thinking of getting a 65 Princeton Reverb.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I burned some serious cash on the Henriksen Bud Six. Tim Lerch recommends it and I can't complain. Portable, v powerful for it's size, and beautiful tube jazz sound. I got a Vintage Reissue '52 and upgraded all the electronics and bridge. Very nice guitar for the price, Didn't want to rip out the guts out of a 2k dollar Fender guitar, but still got that very nice chunky neck. I also got the Quilter 101 Reverb amp head which I had hooked up to a cab with a Celestion Vintage 30 driver. Also very nice sounding and cheaper than the Bud. The amp head is very portable. I basically aimed for the Tim Lerch and got exactly that.
@@TomTabaczynski Very nice. I pulled the trigger on the 65 Princeton Reverb yesterday. Will see how it goes. 🤞
I was at this gig, though I think it was a different set. It changed me forever
man your lessons are amazing!
I just bought a 8 string fan fret guitar and have been non plussed about it. Everybody talks about how low they have the guitar tuned because trying to play bass parts seems to be a fixation in the 8 string world. Until... this video. The idea of adding one string above and one string below just makes total sense. My question is what string gages do you use? I tried pitching the high string up to A (.009) and it snapped. The low string (.085) does not seem happy either.
John, there's an article on Tom's website with the details that you are looking for. I do have a question for you though, how many mm wide is the nut on your 8 string guitar?
It is a Strandberg Boden and it is 58mm
Just watched his video....Thank you
Suono meraviglioso! Quali pickup sono?
Thank you! It's a Lollar CC pick up in the neck.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony Thank you! 🙏
Very nice👌
Thank you so much. Appreciated!
Beautiful !
Thanks Gilbert. A fun little project. 😁
I’ve listened to his HYDRA album many, many times. Such fantastically sublime music. Thank you for sharing this outstanding interview/dialogue. 🙏🏻😎👊🏻🎼
No worries. HYDRA is a great album alright. Soundscapes for days!!
This is gold
Thank you!!
Awesome ❤
It's a great version alright
Dois grandes mestres da guitarra juntos . Só imagina-los interpretando essa música enquanto os sons vão perpassando pelo ar, já é em si uma fábula. Que os dois descansem em paz … 🙏🏾🎶🌎🎸🎸
Thank you for this beauty ❤
More to come 😃 Including one at 6pm GMT this evening ✨ Enjoy
Love it
Thank you Daniel. Just in case that you don't know the almanacs are available for free, or donation of choice, from the Resources page on the Modern Guitar Harmony website. Lots to dig into 😀🎸🎶🤟
Sublime!
These cycles come form Joseph Schillinger not Mick Goodrick Goodrick is great teacher but the originator is Joseph Schillinger
Hello Sonic, yes, musical cycles are nothing new but Modern Guitar Harmony was set up, in part, to promote Mick Goodrick's materials and in particular the three Almanacs (which are now freely available from the MGH website Resources page). Tom's video is all about how to use the Almanacs. Feel free to check them out. You'll get a lot of new ideas and harmony under your fingers for sure.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony Yes I am familiar with the Almanacs, I have even written software that transposes to all keys and string groups with more scales. But these ideas came from Joseph Schillinger not Mick Goodrick. Mick just reformatted them into different formats.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony ua-cam.com/video/sV2sipA0nRk/v-deo.html

Thank goodness that theyre youtube channels like this one to capture otherwise incredible moments someone who wasnt listening to live would have missed. 🙏🙏🙏✊✊✊
Dude I love it! I'm so honored to have my username attached to this music. It really does capture a vibe in been feeling especially since starting the Maharaj series. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks so much for your kind words! Keep on making your videos my friend 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you! This song is perfect for getting me in that spiritual vibe.
I see the beautiful spiral bound copy he's got there at the beginning - I don't suppose there's any talk of making those available again? I've got the PDFs, but something about physical copies just scratches that part of my lizard brain. Lol Not to mention, having it sitting on the stand already makes it easier to dive in than having to go open it in a digital file somewhere.
Yes, we are working on bringing all the Goodchord publications back to live. Stay tuned 👍😁
Intriguing music
Thanks Gilbert. Love those clusters 😀
Hello Mick. Give us a shout sometime.
that's great. Tom is awesome!
This was tremendously helpful!
Agree with James. Tom is an excellent teacher and has a great sense of humor. Would definitely love to see him live (too bad I live about 1000 miles away).
Tom is a fantastic musician and a great guy in person. His learning materials are well worth your investment.
A1 on all accounts James. It's great to have Tom as part of the MGH team.
@@ModernGuitarHarmony I was lucky enough to have him come to my house to jam!!! What a magical day that was. He is a very underappreciated master musician.
