- Scott Toy Guru Neitlich from Spector Creative looks into the almost forgotten Toy Biz end of the line brands that pulled together one of the greatest Marvel Lines ever. And how it pulls off a feat even Marvel Legends has not!
I don't collect Marvel Legends, but I do collect 4" Marvel Universe figures. A lot of the 5" scale Toy Biz figures fit right in my collection especially the bigger figures such as King Pin, Strong Guy, MOJO, and the Brood Alien.
I would love to see your collection sometime! I always loved the 4" line, it was really diverse for figures and they work well with GI Joe to give you that "World building" feeling :)
I was a 80- 90s kid. I remember seeing the Original Toy biz Marvel and x men lines. I loved Marvel from the Cards and Comics so when i seen the toys as a 12 year old I just had to have them.
So true, never seen a Jean gray for years to come. They made Dark Phoenix before Jean.
Those original lines stuck in my head so hard . They were really good I had a few .

It is without question, I still remember seeing the Onslaught figures and losing my mind that and when Cap came in the electro spark wave of the spidey line or the clone saga box set which had KAINE! or the X-men water wars jim lee storm and wolverine. The Daily Bugle playset stayed up on my living room table from Christmas of like 94(I think) till 2000.
I had that Deathlok action figure as a kid. That was a real wild card for me because I wasn't in the habit of collecting toys for superhero characters who weren't in my cartoons.
Fantastic video! Did Toy Biz also have a method of resizing their tooling? That Kay Bee Hall of Fame line also had a ten inch companion line full of nearly identical figures, often with weird repaints.
For me the pre-legends lines are still my favorite figure lines for Marvel. While we did get several figures of main characters like Spider-Man, we did get a lot of obscure characters as well. That was true of the X-Men line. Because it seemed like if a new character was only in a couple panels in one issue of the comic, they ended up making a figure of them at some point. So now you see a figure and have to start digging through the X-Men comics and figure out what issue they where in. That and there where still standout figures too. Like the Captive Sabertooth that I have been carrying around for many years now.
Agree, those were awesome! And the diversity of characters... Incredible times.
Sidenote: People who think exclusives are bad now have NO F-ING IDEA how difficult it was back in the 1990’s.

You can still get marvel hall of Fame old stock figures from big online stores. I just got the black spiderman he showed. My brother worked for Wizard and Toyfare. He's got A LOT of information in his brain.
I have been collecting marvel toybiz figures for about 5 years now, and counting all the paint variations, there are about 700 different figures, I have about 550 of them so far. Some of them are so rare that it is hard to even find a picture of them on line.
The Wolfsbane figure was included as part of the New Mutants Dani Moonstar figure.
Heads and hands of Wolfsbane and Karma were included.
Of course you had to buy three figures .
I wish they'd do a male New Mutants set .
Sunspot , Cannonball ( both had X-Force / X-Factor figures ) and Cypher ( Doug Ramsey) would be great .
Those TB figures were the point when I discovered I was a collector back when I was a kid. They are still pretty affordable today so it’s a great line to collect even today
Definitely agree. The toy biz line brings back so many memories. The local big lots used to carry them and had ample stock lol

I'm still hoping for a comeback of the 5" scale for Marvel. Aside from some non-US repaints, I have a complete collection of the Toy Biz Marvels. I even still pick up the occasional oversized Marvel Legend that can scale with the Toy Biz figures just to continue expanding that collection.

Out of those ... I got The Thing II, Deathlok, Doctor Strange, Green Goblin (that was Spider-Man the Animated Series carded) and an Inferno Armor Iron Man (that I think was Iron Man carded). But I did like and took advantage of K.B.'s 3 for $10 deal, which would've helped Toys "R" Us had they also done that. Though I still got a marked down Alpha Flight two pack of North Star and Auroa from a "Giraffe Store" anyway.

Love the channel but can't disagree harder with you on this one. I loved and still love the old toybiz figures and while they offered a wide variety of characters they didn't offer the variety of Legends. I also feel like the video is a little misleading as a lot of the Toybiz Marvel figures came from different, character specific lines (which you mention but brush passed), by the time we were getting the Hall of Fame figures and other 3 lines there was way less interest and those lines died quickly as they were essentially all repaints, Toybiz was desperately trying to suck the license dry and putting minimal effort into those specific lines you mentioned. I can't argue the nostalgia factor or the old price points though, I still have that OG Marvel Universe line Doom with his 4.99$ price sticker.

I loved the 80s-90s toy biz line i had so many when i was a kid and still have them now. Theres a toy store in my city that has all kinds of new and old toys including the old toy biz line.
I loved that all the characters were all to scale with each other.
The early days of TB was the last days of my childhood toy buying. The last lines I picked at were Spawn, Exo Squad & GI Joe. I can still remember the day I set up my toys to play with and my imagination was no longer there. It had disappeared over night. I stared at them for awhile. Packed them up. Then decided what to donate and what to keep as a collection to sell at a later point. Thankfully high school & college kept me too busy to make those sales. So I still have a few collections left to hand over to my kids.
I would rack up at KB Toys when it was 3 for $10 on sale
It never ceases to amaze me how much I can disagree with one of your videos. It almost seems like a joke to claim Marvel universe figures as superior to marvel legends on any level. Please be certain that what you’re feeling is not just the tug of nostalgia on your heartstrings and instead is an unbiased impartial assessment of the two things that you are comparing because there is no way on gods green earth that you can look at the rogue produced for marvel legends and say that it is inferior in any way to the rogue from marvel universe which looks like Rod Stewart wearing a starlight express costume. Or compare the gambits from either line and not vomit with rage at the ill proportioned head and coat of the universe figure.figure out the Porsche is badAnd that’s only if you’re comparing it to the modern marvel legends because if you’re comparing it to the original marvel legends that came with bases that were so detailed I still use them in dioramas to this day, you would have to be studied for some sort of mental episode if you legitimately thought marvel universe was superior to the first marvel legends. Because even though that original marvel legends did give us travesties like the Emma Frost figures face the accessories and pieces more than made up for it. And their build-a-figures were truly spectacular.
Honestly I’m still waiting for you to release a follow up saying just kidding this was all a very very late April fools joke but alas I don’t think that is forthcoming. In future I think I will just avoid any of these comparison videos you do since I have fundamental differences in opinion on practically everything and my outrage cannot properly be captured in commentary which I need to temper for UA-cam.

The toy biz marvel figures are definitely my go to for collecting marvel. I pretty much still have all the different lines, from X-Men, fantastic four, iron man and Spider-Man. Legends look cool but I love the play value along with vehicles and playsets.
I loved the Spiderman and X-Men/X-Force Toy Biz figures back in the 90's and I still enjoy buying figures from those different series now. I wish Hasbro would make figures in this scale again because Toy Biz never made Toad in the 90's X-Men and X-Force series.

I can kind of understand what you're saying because it's very similar to how I think the power of the force 2 line is my favorite (not the best though) Star Wars line due to its availability, jump from sculpt comparing it to the Kenner figures, and character diversity being unrivaled, but it's hard to deny that something like the legacy or vintage collection is much better. Sure the Marvel universe or 5" toybiz lines were pretty good, but Marvel legends, more specifically the toybiz era, were incredible and absolutely remarkable for their time as the sculpting and articulation rivals figures even today (unless you were a female and your name isn't psylocke). Not to mention, the toy biz Marvel legends also had a habit of putting Big characters in a normal Box like Apocalypse or the Hulk.
Wait pause go back and Hold all the way up....... Are you telling me that in one point in time between me stopping collecting and starting back up again the was a Marvel 2099 Line of figures!?!?!?!?!,!
The Rhino was the one figure I had to search and search for as a kid loving Spider-Man TAS. It wasn't until they re-issued him with the armor during the "Spider-wars" line that I got one!

The Toy Biz Line was appealing to the eye with their cardbacks....articulation, inconsistency, and overall design was lacking. The price range was due to inflation and the overall cost to market these restricted mold of figures. For a $10.00 figure was common for Toy Biz but as far as Marvel Legends is concerned....it doesn't compare because the engineering of these molds wasn't developed.
Awesome video, as always, Scott! I didn't collect much of the X-Men figures, but I enjoyed the few comics I had and loved the animated series!

I'll give Marvel toy lines one thing they have over DC figure lines is that they have hella diversity. They'll release waves full of characters you may never expect in action figure form where DC will give you waves of basic mainline characters, then a ton of Batman variants.
This was my favorite figure line to collect, hands down. I wish Marvel Legends were in scale with it since I really don't feel like starting a whole new collection. They seem to do every scale BUT 5 inch anymore. Those 3 for $10 deals were awesome too.
This entire video is cap and should be a reference to the lengths people will go to shite on Hasbro. I like many others had tons of these figures and I can without a doubt say there isn't a single thing Toybiz has done that Hasbro hasn't damn near annihilated. For one, those "bigger" figures didn't scale with anything, until Hasbro made their 3.75 line. The female figures were atrocious, even when the line turned into Legends. TB sculptors couldn't do a woman's body and face justice if their lives depended on it. And last but not least Hasbro has created 3 times the variety of TB, best line ? Not from where I'm sitting.
The X-men vs Street Fighter & Marvel vs Capcom lines were great as well! The only one to have Cyclops w/ his leather jacket. Only ever saw it once, but had already spent my allowance the night before!
Until Hasbro release a Danny Ketch and bike, Vengeance ghost rider and a new movie blade with bike, toybiz will remain the king. Man they could really make a build a figure back then too.
Gosh, loads of toys here I’ve never seen before. Prob a combination of being British and I was an awkward teen who was pretending not to like toys for this decade.
I disagree that the 5 inch Toy Biz line is better than the Marvel Legends line but it was pretty awesome. As a DC fan I was/still am jealous.
This one kinda surprised me, as it just seemed like lazy repaints/re-issues at first. But the fact that many of the characters were sold with this much availability/variety probably helped many young collectors grab key figures.
Not to mention some of the repaints were pretty amusing, like "Laundry Day Ghost Rider" where flamehead is sporting bright blue jeans. 🤣

Have to agree as well. Have a good display of the TB Marvel figs in my garage and most all of the SpiderMan tv series carded still. 👍🏻
I remember the very end of this line very icon I was a kid when they transitioned from these to spiderman classics. Such and icon line of toys at this time in my life I was into the batman and robin movie toy line and other batman toys. Hadn't quit yet gotten into marvel toys.
They could care less. All Hasbro and the others care about is what's current since their money comes from what's for sale now. And for younger collectors with no sense of nostalgia due to not being old enough to have it, what's new fills their collecting wants moreso than anything vintage.

It's only gaming minis and they have that big clicky base, but Heroclix has produced SO MUCH from the Marvel Universe that it needs to be put on a pedestal.
Not to mention the other properties it produces. From DC to Street Fighter to Star Trek, even Aliens and Friday The 13th if you count the Horrorclix sculpts.

I had the symbiote Spider-Man figures. The hand/wrist joints were reversed from the original toy biz multi jointed Spidey.
I remember they would do something like 3 for 20 or something. Found marvel universe Apocalypse was super stoked.

Hasbro's Marvel Universe & related sublines were pretty stellar too, but I grew up on the 90s Toy Biz stuff.
I remember getting a Dark Phoenix from the K B Toy line. Probably still have it somewhere.

The video really highlights how far sculpting, paint, and articulation have come. The toys being made today would have blown all of our little minds when we were kids. Too bad kids today are too busy with their noses buried in their phones to appreciate it. But that's okay, we'll appreciate it for them.

90s toybiz is my favorite x-men, I have a decent collection. Even today they're still mostly cheaper to buy and collect over marvel legends. Plus I like the vintage and nostalgic feel of the 90s Toyline. 👍
