I wouldn't really put it that way.
It's just that man introverts are so used to get either no or negative feedback, that it becomes nigh impossible to accept positive feedback as genuine or more than just a mention out of pity.
Like a woman with several abusive ex's might be unable to love a new guy.
And for hardcore introverts, the crippled social skills make it both harder to accept others and by accepted by others. And to experience the snowball effect of a growing social network.

@@boooster101 Exactly. People need to realize we've been spending so much time in the game, that we've forgotten the nonsense in our own behavior, and so when an introvert speaks to us, we assume their behavior is awkward, when really what we're perceiving is that they can see the game for what it is and it is a difficult process to unravel it. This is why once you get to know introverts they open up, because you understand them, and you allow yourself to be understood. One just has no time for the charade of social behavior when understanding is far more appealing. Hence the holodeck in this piece. "They are more real to me than anyone here."

Reg is one the best characters in Star Trek. How many of us can relate to someone like him, socially awkward, never being able to fit in, never having a chance to shine because people just don't get you or understand you. He's an introvert, and being one myself I know how difficult it can be to fit in and make friends and form bonds. Sadly a lot of people don't give introverts a chance and they end up shutting themselves off. Reg isn't just one of the best characters, he's one of the most realistic and inspiring of characters because we see him struggle, see how eventually people accept him and his quirks and he goes on to do amazing things in Starfleet. You've got to build these guys up. Picard's a good Captain, he knows how to handle this. A nice little to note to Lt Barclay saying, "Please give me an interim report within 48 hours, I know you'll do a great job!" Then slip the equivalent of a commander's coin to Barclay and congratulate him publicly. This kind of thing happens all the time in the military, and it's often the edge that folks that need some encouragement need. You don't need perfection on your team, you need people that work hard, seek self improvement, and tackle challenges that they might fail at. Because only TV makes for a crew that gets it right all of the time.

Reg Barclay was a wonderful character. I remember cringing when he first appeared and everyone in the main cast didn't know how to deal with him. I'm a different kind of personality than Barclay, but I recognized that "Nerds!" socially awkward, painfully shy character that Barclay was, the misfit who's actually a nice guy and a good person and talented, but gets overlooked or made fun of. I like that Star Trek made an effort to understand and include people like him, by first highlighting, even caricaturing him, then gradually bringing him in and having the crew get to know him and make friends. A whole range of different traits can make someone a social outsider, even when the people around them should not exclude them. Over the years, my appreciation for Barclay has grown a lot. ohohoho I can't believe I'm hearing this. Really you think Guinan gave good advice? That's just astonishing. I mean why would everybody be avoiding Barclay's presence unless there was something specific about Barclay that warranted that response? People don't just RANDOMLY avoid specific human beings EN MASSE for no apparent reason. We don't see a random ostracization of Riker, or Data, or any of the lower lieutenants which would lead them to feel late and nervous. Obviously the problem originates with Barclay. And more than likely a few people have tried to talk to him but to no avail.
That Guinan fails to understand this, as apparently you do, is really quite shocking considering her position as ancient alien pseudo-counselor. I mean OBVIOUSLY Barclay suffers from a number of social anxiety disorders and merely needs to talk to a therapist or psychologist to work them out. But no, you people believe that its somehow the crew's fault, and that they randomly caused Barclay to be this way, but no one else. Good god help me stay calm
