This is one of the best scenes in TNG imo. Because it wasn’t just a character pulling a solution out of thin air. It was a group of people working together, removing all possibilities until the solution is found.

1:34 the moment Barclay fights through his insecurities to do his job and make a difference. The repeated "What if.." is a brilliant way to show his fight against his self-doubt in order to put forward a new perspective; one that points to the eventual solution. Remarkably effective acting choice that does so much to tell the story. Loved it from the moment I first saw it.

Barclay's so 'in the zone' that he barely reacts when LaForge slaps his arm to tell him to go with him. He isn't confused by it at all. You'd expect him to jump with nervousness or be confused as to what it meant. But here, he just falls in behind LaForge, off to prove their theory.

I think one of the reasons people tend to dislike Barclay's character so much is precisely because his actor is so damn good. No one enjoys being reminded of their own self doubt or social anxieties, and he does such an amazing job of portraying them. I used to hate his episodes when I was young, but now I love them. That was the one problem with the climax of the episode: the timing. Neutralizing the invidium just lets them shut the injectors down, but the kind of damage they're talking about isn't undone by removing the agent that caused it in the first place. This is akin to boiling water on a stove, turning off the burner, and expecting the water to freeze in a few seconds.
They needed a crisis with a slow buildup, something where the end result was visible and unavoidable unless mounting damage stopped progressing. Instead they used an immediate crisis where damage already done needed to be fixed.
Also, there should be some kind of emergency cutoff mechanisms for fuel injectors into the warp core. You're talking about an antimatter bomb in slow motion: being able to shut it off is absolutely critical.

I can easily see Barclay being the one to come up with the answer to the problem. From what we learn about him in future episodes, he has a lot of innate fear that often takes over his imagination. I bet upon hearing there are all sorts of substances out there that cannot be detected by normal scans, his mind was probably imagining just how many terrifying possibilities might arise from those substances going out of control. Thus it makes sense that the idea of a rogue substance creating problems would be lurking in the back of his mind, and therefore making it easier for him to come up with this idea here.

Not running was a practical limitation. Those corridor sets are probably 30 feet long at best, taking just a few seconds to cover at a run.
Red Letter Media made a similar comment in his review of Star Wars Ep 3. Anakin had just told Mace Windu that Palpatine was Darth Sideous, and instead of running to face him, they just continue to stroll along. RLM posited that the actors were on a fairly small green screen stage, and so could not physically express hustling. To compare/contrast, he then cuts to a clip from, incidentally, Star Trek 2009, where Kirk is running to check some sensor readings before coming out of warp into an ambush.
