    7:34 pm Phoenix Arizona ! I enjoyed watching your video ~ I've never polished resin before ~ I make items out of resin but they come out of the molds and so far I haven't had to polish them ~ Until today ~ I have 2 clocks that need polishing ~ I don't have the equipment you do but now I know what I have to do ~ I really enjoyed watching you polishing your pieces ~

    Even if nothing else was useful, which it WAS, there were two really good tidbits in there: first, I knew that lathe artists often use denatured alcohol between grits, but not WHY. Second, that tip about using woodworking wax grit to polish headlights is SUPER COOL!

    Hey Jake! DOUG suggested we come learn some of your techniques for sanding and polishing resin. I use the micro sanding pads on my small stuff like acrylic pens and bottle stoppers. One thing I learned when I used to do body and paint, while wet sanding a panel I’d use a few drops of dish soap in my sanding water. It breaks the surface tension and the water stays with the project and doesn’t dry out as fast. Give it a try and see what you think. Thanks for sharing!

I was excited but kinda got discouraged. If you have any suggestions what we can use if we don’t have those machines. Thank you for watching and I’m glad you were excited at first. Lol this all can be done by hand or random orbital sanders or the other tools you mentioned. You can put small buffing wheels on a drill and buff that way.. I have shown that on a few on my more recent videos.. I have done flat projects with an orbital sander and then wet sand by hand .. it came out pretty well.. I hope I helped you.

    Wondering why you don’t Wet Sand with the Abranet? It works really well and reduces the dust….
    Also, why DNA between grits when wet sanding? Doesn’t the water wash off the dust?
    Thanks for such a great video!

    • @JakeThompson

      After I made this video I started to wet sand with abranet. Water will work between grits but I like to do it to be sure to get all the old grit off, and it looks awesome and you get to see what it’s going to look like.. but either will work.. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 👍👍

      @ 4:50 I saw a really great idea for that on Alec Steele's channel. Will Stelter shared his technique of using @ 1-2cm wide strips of sanding paper backed with duck tape to extend the life of it. It would work really well, here, too, I imagine. It's almost like super big dental floss that way.

    Hello Jake, thanks much for the videos, learned a lot as I'm trying to assist my daughter who wants to work with resins and to start her own business, using my limited knowledge with wood working, It's very similar. The items she thought of making and selling, are small and not much bigger than the palm of the hand for now, so everything is done by hand, there really is no room for machinery.
    And I found a few videos that used several methods to pull the bubbles out that form upon mixing / pouring and using a lighter to pop some of them, it seems like a coffee mug warmer worked the best to get out the micro bubbles, when a vacuum chamber is not an option. And yorkshire-grit would that be best to use or more of a polishing compound after 1k or 2k grit wet sanding to bring out that clear / shine, for the lack of a better word.

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  4 роки тому +1

      SgtDreTecKeGamer awesome She will have tons of fun.. if you are going to use Yorkshire grit I wouldn’t go past 1,000 grit.. you can also sand it to a higher grit and use a resin top coat.. there’s lots of ways to do this.

    • @SgtDreTecKeGamer
      @SgtDreTecKeGamer 4 роки тому +1

      @@JakeThompson Thanks for getting back to me, much appreciated, what are your thoughts on using heat as in the Mug warmer to help remove the micro bubbles.

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  4 роки тому +1

      SgtDreTecKeGamer I’ve never tried it but.. if you don’t have a pressure pot.. using a torch works, if the heater works.. go for it. I’m all about finding alternative ways to make things work.
