  • On this episode of Bens Worx I cast walnut burl in epoxy resin to make a resin dragon egg. I left it to cure in the pressure pot and then shaped it using a sander, I polished it up with some Yorkshire grit on the buffing wheel.

I think we need more videos like this - many UA-cam makers have very much better-equipped workshops than their audiences - workarounds for advanced results with basic tools are really useful

Yeah ... A drill press isn't far from a lathe turned up on end. I still like the video, and a drill press may be easier to get your hands on than a lathe, but it's not quite lathe free. It's more like "lathe" "free***"

If you have a nature reserve, Forrest or some bush nearby where you live you can go through and try to find fallen/cut down trees and dig up their stumps, cut off a few roots and it'll look more like the classic "Burl" shape. You can also buy burls and wood samples from eBay and other online retailers. You may be able to find burls at dams where old trees used to be on land but have been submerged by the raised water levels leading to more root balls.

I don't understand why you don't just buy something egg shaped, then cast a silicone mold of it, then pour and cure the resin in the mold? Seems to me it would be much easier. You would have to sand your wood to fit snug into the bottom of the mold before pouring the resin, just like you did with the cup, but you would have much less sanding of the resin to do. Unless you just enjoy using all those sanding machines.....like my brother always getting his jeep stuck so he could use his wench....lol

You would have saved yourself a lot of sanding time if you suspended the wood piece upside down in the cup. The narrow end of the egg would be the narrow end of the cup.

Great video. I have zero idea how I came to be on this channel but cool. I don't get the attraction at all to dragon eggs, but you are very engaging.

Thanks for providing these alternatives. A lathe, even a "cheap" one, is not something that many of us hobbyists can easily afford. Using tools that you already have is perfect for me. Thanks for the video and your amazing work.

You did not use a Lathe but the press and and the drill by definition could be considered a Lathe the way you used them

The point is not many people can afford a Lathe, but can afford a cordless drill. It’s all about finding an alternative for the process

Title needs to be more accurate as you basically used your drill and drill press as a pseudo lathe. That being said, nice result on the egg

Hi Ben. I'm here from Reddit. Your dragon egg is brilliant!! I learned so much. Mostly I learned I will never be able to make one of these. I don't have the equipment, and also, I am visually impaired, being "legally blind" since birth. How long would you say, from start to finish, did it take to make this one egg? And do you sell them? I'd LOVE to buy one from you! (*I just found your Etsy shop listed above). Thank you so much. I'm subscribing!! :-D

Hi Molly, Thankyou! They take approximately 3 hours start to finish
