    Have you ever wondered how honey is extracted from honeycomb? Whether you're a fan of honey or a beekeeper yourself, have a look at my tutorial on how I harvest honey from my own hives. In this video, I show how I uncap the honey, then spin the honey out with an extractor, filter the honey, allow it to settle, and then bottle it up in jars. I keep two colonies of 'British Black' honeybees on the Isle of Man and share more info on extracting honey here: lovelygreens.com/how-to-extra...

      That’s the problem with education nowadays: Forcing people to study topics that don’t kindle your passion for something. I could fall asleep watching or reading stuff like this about bees and honey because it’s peaceful and interesting - but I’ll fall asleep during class because, really - nobody gives a damn if e=Mc^2, lol

    This is probably the most thorough yet concise presentations of honey extracting I've yet come across. It makes sense to leave the most of the integrity of the honeycombs for the bees to replenish the combs faster. Nicely done!

    When I went to Mexico I bought honey from a local bee farmer, It was the most amazing honey I'd ever tasted... And the comb was so soft and fun to chew on! I had actually bought it from him on harvest day too. It was in a part of Mexico where a lot of people butchered their own meat, harvested their own crops and sold them on the street daily. The thing I wasn't too pleased about eating there, was street pig intestine... Blech!
    You know what they say though! The best things come from nature

      Eating anything from a pig is disgusting. Almost everyone is familiar with the phrase, "you are what you eat", but for some reason people don't seem to connect the dots when it comes to pork. Pigs are one of the most sleaziest, filthy disease ridden animals God ever created and yet they serve a purpose. However they are certainly not meant for human consumption and is also why God instructed us not to eat them. I remember as a child watching a pig go through the slaughtering process at a slaughter house and as they were hanging the pig, I remember watching the trichinosis worms come out of the meat. As to the reason why you're instructed to always cook pork really well. But once you understand what a pig actually eats and why they're such a filthy disgusting creature, it amazes me folks still eat pork products. Yum yum you are what you eat... And folks wonder why we have the health issues of today

  • @blackisback74

    That's a nice extractor. Mine only allows for 4 frames at a time. With 4 four hives containing two supers each, it takes me an entire day to expect my honey. That's why I'm considering buying one of these flow hives because the amount of effort and work it takes at the end of the season is enormous and I know I could probably get several harvests but just don't have the energy to do it by myself several times throughout the year.

    Thank You so much for sharing. I recently ( almost 2 years ago) moved to Ukraine in the Carpathian Mountains region (about a 20 minute walk to Romania) where we befriended a family that keeps bees for a living. They live nearby. Their honey is so delicious. We will be going to their home soon to get a personal look at the process. I can't wait to see it. Until I go there (in the next few days)--I am watching videos like yours to hold me over. Thank You for such a nice detailed explanation.

      I don't know of any blogs or links, but if I find out of any I'll let you know. If you will be in the north west part of Romania--you will be near us here. I am in a town/village called Teresva. There is a border post between Ukraine & Romania nearby. I went through it twice this Summer. The name of the town in Romania where the border/customs post is located is called Sighetu. On the other side in Ukraine--the name of the town is Solotvino. I might have misspelled those names a bit. Anyway--we can always meet you guys here in Ukraine, and take you to that family's place. My wife told me that there are several families in our area that keep honeybees.Lovely Greens - Handmade Living, Gardening, Lifestyle, and Tutorials

    @Lovely Greens I want to photograph a honey comb and get a macro shot (close up shot) of the hexagon cells that make up the comb. My problem is the wax caps are preventing that and i don't have the proper tools for the uncapping. It doest matter if the other side has wax cabs because I'm going to back light it. So how do i uncap them without the proper tools like that hot knife and uncapping comb? Oh also. if i uncap it will the honey pour out and make a mess?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  7 років тому

      I'd suggest that you begin with 'Drawn' comb that hasn't had any honey in it. That way you'll get a clear and clean shot. Chat to a local beekeeper and I'll bet they'd help you out with getting a hold of a good frame.

    Hi, very interesting video...really enjoyed it..i have a question in regards to honey..is it true that the longer the honey is kept with bees..the thicker it gets because water content goes down?..and also is there a way to get honey to not taste maple-ish...i live in canada and most of the honeys i have tried they taste maple-ish and im not a fan of the maple taste?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  6 років тому +1

      When honeybees work nectar they've gathered into honey, they evaporate the water out. When honey becomes the right consistency, the bees cap the honey in the honeycomb. It doesn't get thicker after this but may crystallize after time, depending on the nectar source.
      As far as the flavour is concerned, honey can taste of whatever the bees have been foraging on.

    When we had bees build a colony on the side of our house a few years ago, Id tear out a chunk of the hive then stick it in a fresh pot of coffee & have it dissolve inside it.
    Unfortunately I got unwanted particles like dead bees & wax clumps but they mostly floated to the top then I got to have delicious honey coffee.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  9 років тому

      notaras1985 I'm not a fan of crushing and straining because it ruins the comb. If you spin the honey out then put the frames back in the hive, the bees clean up the comb and repair it opposed to having to build it new again. Afraid there's no way around the two days resting phase that I know of.

    I love this demo, it is very close to my own extraction method. Regarding the question of whether honey is vegan, I think perhaps you need to consider how the honey is extracted and whether it is done with consideration and integrity towards the bees and decide whether that influences your choices. It depends on the mindset of the vegan! Honey is not produced by bees the way milk is by cows for example, it is not lactated or made from from its own body. The nectar harvested from plants, and then is converted by a chemical process by the bees, and reduced in water content by regulation of the temperature within the hive. When a mindful beekeeper extracts honey it is not to the detriment of the bees as we never take anything for the main brood chamber, only from the "super" which is put on when there is more honey than the bees need (superfluous).

      Exhibit A on why vegans are insufferable.
