    Great video! I modified it slightly by removing the fan housing (four bolts, 1 plug an 15 minutes). Made the removal of the alternator effortlessly.

    This video saved me money and time. Thorough and clear. The tool prep at the beginning REALLY helped! I couldn't imagine having to go out an find that special tool after it was in pieces. In fact, with that location, I'd have to wast an hour trying to guess what type of screw that 12-sided one was. Thank you!

    Your video sir, was the only one I saw that was identical to the way my 2011 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 se looked, I did everything you did, except I didn't know about taking the idol pulley off and the loosening of the high pressure bolt. And I didn't know the compressor swung out like that, it's been under the car with me trying like hell to get the alternator to break free. Thank you for making this video,

    I cant seem to find a 12 point 10mm torx driver in my town. Can i use a lower point count and will it fit and work? (7 points exact)
    Also my wifes car after replacing the battery, is no longer charging the battery and when she is driving. After we replaced it (not aware of any other issues) her car started to stutter and all of her electronics in the car started freaking out. I've narrowed it down to the alternator, does that sound correct? the car also has 104000 miles on it and is a 2013.
    Thank you!

    • @djovadose
      @djovadose 3 роки тому

      I just did it and didn’t have the 10mm 12 point Torx. I skipped that step and was able to remove and replace the alternator. I would just be very careful with the fan. I saw someone remove the fan shroud in about 15 mins, that might be an option.

      You will need to unlock the car with the fob, or if your VW has a key hole on the drivers door, I usually have the key already inserted into the door so I can immediately unlock the car to shut the alarm off.
      I dont think the '12 has a key hole there without removing a secret cover.
      If that is the case: inserting your key into the ignition (make sure your window is down or door is open incase the car locks) and then make sure your key is in the "accessory" position, and then connect your battery.

    • @DoogieLabs
      @DoogieLabs  2 роки тому

      Thread the bolt in but stop short of bottoming the bolt head on the alternator body, and then use a hammer to tap on the bolt head and push the nut inserts out. Make sure you give the bolt 4 full turns if possible so you have enough bite that you don't damage the thread.

    hi. i have a 12 passat tdi. need my alternator replaced. what is a good quote for a mobile mechanic? he is quoting me 800

    • @DoogieLabs
      @DoogieLabs  3 роки тому +1

      Hello,
      Book time is 3.5 Hours to replace the alternator. @ $125 / hr you're looking at around $440 in just labor.
      If they are using a genuine VW alternator the cost seems in line. If they are using an auto parts store alternator I would expect a couple hundred less.

    • @Mrsprinter7
      @Mrsprinter7 3 роки тому +1

      @@DoogieLabs ok. Looks pike there are some remanufactured ones and one new one around $350. He quoted me $450 for everything the first day then today came and said it’s going to take longer and went to 800 because how it sits. Shouldn’t he have looked more throughly the first time? Thoughts?

    • @DoogieLabs
      @DoogieLabs  3 роки тому +1

      @@Mrsprinter7 This alternator job does take a little longer than it would on a typical vehicle. It kind of sounds like he gave you the typical "about an hour" initial quote that the vast majority of vehicles take and then did a bit of research or had to look again.
      With that being said, whenever I charge for a repair I will only charge the customer the amount of time the service manual says the procedure should take. If the repair takes longer than expected I don't charge extra for it.
      Usually you can call a dealer service department and ask how much book time a certain procedure is going to take without having to book an appointment.
      Also: The alternator on your TDI is pretty much the same job as this 2.5 was as far as complexity is concerned. I was able to easily perform the task within the 3.5 hours and still do my usual inspections without feeling rushed.
      If they had to look at it twice, that tells me they are inexperienced with your particular engine platform. (Which isn't always a bad thing. I mean, this video was my first time working on the 2.5 5cyl.)

    Any tips for removing a stripped M10 torx bolt that connects to the idler pulley??

    • @DoogieLabs
      @DoogieLabs  4 роки тому

      Your local advance auto parts will sell an Irwin branded "bolt extractor set" which includes a thing you can pound over the bolt head and then put a standard wrench on to get out.
      You will have a tough time pounding it on because of how close it is to the radiator but I think you can do it. Sometimes you can put an extension into the extractor and pound on the extension to pound it in place. That may not work in your case.
      Best of luck!

    Does this apply to a 2013 TDI SEL?

    • @Matt_K68
      @Matt_K68 3 роки тому

      It is similar, but there’s less room on the 2013 TDI SEL.
      Step one, disconnect battery terminal.
      Step two, remove splashguard underneath.
      Step three, remove fan guard from radiator. And place card board in its place.
      Step four, loosen fuel filter and fold up on top of engine.
      Step five, take off serpentine belt and remove from engine area. You don’t want to get antifreeze on it.
      Step six, pop bottom radiator hose off and drain into pan for reuse. Place plastic bag over radiator hose barb with rubber band.
      Step seven, remove the Heat exchanger from the throttlebody. Disconnect the two small hoses on the top and plug them. Remove the top radiator hose and let that follow the heat exchanger down the hole. Pull the heat exchanger down through the bottom, along with the hose that goes to the bottom of the radiator.
      Step eight, remove the bolts from the AC compressor, but do not remove the compressor. We just want it loose.
      Step nine, remove the bolts from the alternator. Use a screwdriver to pry the alternator towards the radiator. Remove the cables and connectors from the alternator.
      Step 10, remove the alternator down through the bottom using the cavity created by removing heat exchanger.
      Step 11 replace the alternator with new one. Add all connections to it before folding it into place.
