The gun is in the stealth cupola on the front deck, looks like a Zumwalt's setup. I think maybe Visby has a 57mm in a similar cupola.
Experimental or not, it is a fine looking ship. The smaller radar does suggest this is for systems R, D and integration, however if it is used with other "friendly" assets they can provide targeting data via ship to ship links, so maybe not that unusual a choice?
The retractable gun is interesting, and at a guess this is probably very much an investigational design, but at this stage no-one really knows. If this IS the fore-runner of a new compact class of "missile truck", then the UVLS is easily explained, especially if the system relies on data from other radars or even orbital assets (so reducing the vessel's radiation signature). Not being reliant on a powerful (so detectable) radar, but on the radars or imaging systems of other platforms, would seem a very smart way to maintain stealthiness, especially under genuine combat situations.

while I get the rationale behind it, I still think the bridge being that high on a small ship looks weird.
The warship is not important. What is important is that the workers on the slipway are so young. Look at the middle-aged and old people in our shipyard.

On the topic of long-range air defense missions, I was thinking about what if they used this as a testbed to test firing long-range interception using only data link and the combat management system where it used targeting info from bigger more capable ships to fire the long-range missile? 🤔
Of course and not just for air-defense either. The long-range missile could be anti-ship too, directed to target by an airborne KJ-2000/KJ-500 or possibly even a carrier-launched KJ-600. We taxpayers won't be getting any breaks, as the Pentagon will want to counter all these PLA weapons by asking for more money from Congress.

A stern funnel may complicate helicopter landings at high ship speeds due to exhaust up draft creating air turbulence. Less so at lower speeds.

As you can see for yourself, more or less a copy of the Swedish Visby Class corvette from the 1990's.
A spiritual successor to the Type 022 seems apt. A small stealthy dedicated anti-surface combatant seems like an ideal defensive ship. In a Taiwan scenario, China is essentially fighting in it's near-shore arena.
Could be a precursor to an actual type in future. The stealth frigate seems far more complete and outfitted than other dedicated experimental vessels, like that Type 072 landing ship with a huge railgun slapped onto it.

No, it's more likely the next-gen Type 056 corvette with the absolute minimum for extended operations: mandatory deck gun, single VLS rack, and single helopad. The Type 022 missile boat is much smaller, though it's surely due for replacement by something faster, stealthier, and more potent.

@@hughmungus2760 The Type 022 is a sound concept, and I think smallness and speed are supposed to be its survival points. I also expect that China will be fielding arsenal ships along with all-new unmanned naval drones, smart mines, and drone carriers. They have shipbuilding capacity to make all sorts of experimental one-offs.

With a VLS system (32 cells or better) and a helipad, this stealthy ship could be developed into a multi-use (anti-ship, anti-sub and/or anti-air) platform that would be effective in the South China Sea and the first and second island chains.
American Subs would make short work of all ships in the south China sea.
@@bdub1934 american subs would stir up a hornets nest the moment they fire their torpedos. 30nm is about the maximum range you can engage a warship assuming the ship is sitting still. If the ship is alerted to a torpedo coming its way, it can run the opposite direction in which case a torpedo only has around 10nm of range.
Getting that close to a group of chinese warships would pretty much mean the moment a US sub fires its torpedo. half a dozen ASW helicopters are scrambled to search for it, in which case it has a slim chance of escaping.
If the US feels like trading a 2 billion dollar sub for a 300 million dollar frigate or corvette go for it.
... and in response, Chinese missiles would make short work of all American bases in the Indo-Pacific, including Guam. The US Pacific Fleet would have to retreat all of the way back to Pearl Harbor and San Diego if they don't want to get sunk in port.
@bdub1934 No matter how well concealed a submarine is, it is exposed after launching an attack. This is simply a suicidal act. Any light frigate above 1,000 tons that can carry a helicopter, such as the Type 056A, can pose a fatal threat to the submarine.

there is a stealth version of the Leonardo Oto-Melara 76/62 with recessed gun barrel, installed on some Italian built vessels sold for a middle eastern client. The use of UVLS on such a small vessel might also imply some sort of Collaborative Engagement Capability perhaps, a possible use as a drone platform capable of deploying large UAV and/or as a missile arsenal platform for bigger more capable combatants.
They don't show weapons to demonstrate their intimidating power. They are peace honchos.
I think most assessment of this experimental ships are wrong! This seems likely to be an unmanned or optionally manned ship like operation overlord vessels that would be autonomous and may operate independently or with manned ships in high threat environments!
You don't put a big bridge and helo on an unmanned ship. If this were an armed drone ship, it would be even smaller and more heavily armed. All of the crew and logistics space would be filled by weapons.
