FreeCAD 0.20 For Beginners | 2 | Create a simple model and export to STL in Part Design

- Welcome to part 2 of the new total beginners course to FreeCAD 0.20. In this lesson we will teach you a basic part design workflow and go through the fundamentals of using the sketcher to create sketches that are fully constrained. We will then use these sketches to pad and pocket the model to create our object. We will then learn how to export this out in STL format for 3D Printing or loading into another application such as blender.
In this course we teach the fundamentals of freeCAD using the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.
In one lesson you may be learning how to sketch and build a model but will also be following a workflow that will take through the part design workbench all the way to exporting it out in STL format. In another lesson you may be learning how to model in the part workbench to see the differences between it and the part workbench but you will be following a workflow that will allow you to create 2D plans of your model to laser / paper cut.
We aim to teach you freeCAD in a practical way.

A new-user tip for the "Select" tool: If you create the box from left to right, you'll only select the items that completely fit inside your selection box. But if you go right-to-left, you'll select every item that touches/intersects with the selection box. (This is common in CAD software, and FreeCAD is no exception).
Definitely THE BEST tutorial. He speaks loud, slow and clear. He tells you EVERY single movement he makes. I'm going to be busy watching these tutorials for a while after I get through them!!!!

Loud, slow, clear etc. Absolutely and it is slightly unusual for an expert to recognise that beginners need these attributes.
very good. I have used many CAD systems dating from the 80s till now (CADAM, ProEngineer, Solidworks, SurfaceCAM, MasterCAM, etc). It has been about 15 years since I've done any CAD work at all and boy have things progressed! What FreeCAD offers for free used to cost $60K a license in the 90s. I'm getting back into it because my wife bought me a 3D printer :) . However, I didn't find FreeCad all that intuitive to use because of the jumping back and forth between "workbenches". Your videos are extremely helpful.
Nice to see your coming back to CAD, I know what it feels like coming back to 3D after a long break, have been through the same myself. The workbenches can be very confusing but once you have got used to them then they come second nature. I personally customize them in my day-to-day use but use the defaults for the videos. Tools can be moved from one workbench to another so I have a number of commonly used tools that I use the most on my toolbar. Glad your enjoying the videos.
Super helpful. I was getting very frustrated with FreeCAD and trying to manage all the bodies, pads, and sketches I was creating and trying to merge through boolean operations and this tutorial was exactly what I needed: clearly explained and demonstrated. Perfect!

Its been a while since I did Freecad, so I had to refresh my understanding. Thanks to Mango Jelly, I can do that. Really great beginning videos. Really like how he showed exporting to stl file two different ways. Helps me with my 3d printing. Just got a Prusa 4**, and love it.

Great video and very clear narration, spoken at the right speed. I got caught out following this a few times with the precise steps that must be followed for External Geometry to apply to the top surface as the default is the bottom surface. Only until I realised the surface has to be selected first before starting a new sketch, so the sketch then applies only to that surface. Making a new save after every step saved a lot of time, when things stopped working, which they constantly do.
Thanks for making this, it was helpful! One constructive criticism, as a first-time FreeCAD user I found the parts where you would do the same thing multiple ways, going back and forth, doing something and then undoing it, to be hard to follow. For my personal learning style, I would prefer just following along a single forward-moving path, once I have become comfortable with one way to do it, then I am more able to absorb multiple ways... I am not able to easily absorb a lot of info without having a context to place it in.
Thank you, all constructive criticism I take on board. You may enjoy the CAD thinking pilot episode which is taught a little differently from the other episodes and is split up into more manageable and direct tasks.

These tutorials are great!
As a machinist I'll say one thing though: Only apply fillets and chamfers to the model if they're functional or cosmetic. If you only want sharp edges broken by, say, a 0.2mm chamfer, just call it out in the drawing :) Some CAM programs deal best with deburring on sharp model edges.

Also, adding chamfers or fillets to a CAD model all over just uses computing power 👍. As a time served draughtsman, , who started out on drawing board with Rotring pencils and pens, design it and draw it as if you were making it on a manual bridgeport, a Colchester lathe, and a surface grinder. I have seen too many uni grad designers causing too many unneeded probs for toolmakers. 😂

Thank you for this great step-by-step tutorial! You make freecad look like it actually makes real sense! Think I've found a turning point in my struggles with freecad from here, while there are still many things to get grasp of, but this helped incredibly much after some very frustration filled attempts in the past.
This tutorial has helped me gather some essential concepts of the basic workflow and how to benefit from advanced CAD functionality compared to Tinkercad, which is more like an old school 3D-modeling software with just a tad more CAD bias. I master Tinkercad fairly well, but it's always so restricted.
You rock dude. I figured I was going to hate switching from mesh modeling to CAD since the programs look a bit dry but I'm really liking how clean the work flow is. Thank you!

I love your unique style of making tutorials, where you anticipate a natural reaction of an intelligent learner. He would often have a "second track" running in his mind, asking if this is the only way to do it, or what if he did it in a different way, or why he should be doing this step at all, etc.
Most people make tutorial with a linear narration, where a model is created without any trouble.
But when the learner tries it himself, even with a small variation, he gets stuck.
But in your way of teaching, many of the _"what if-"_ scenarios are covered, so the learner becomes more confident in trying out different things, and yet he is able to predict what will happen.
Even the *Comments* section is full of learning, where many learners have raised pertinent doubts and you have provided solutions.
That's what makes it my favorite channel!

Thank you so much for the kind feedback, it's always great to hear how people are finding these tutorials. My pet hate is to go through a tutorial and not be aware of some of the possible things that can go wrong and how to correct or work around them. Believe it or not there is no script, well, for the larger builds or an idea for something I want to teach I tend to do a step by step quick run through as a series of written steps with screenshots but very very high level (I release these for certain levels of patreonage on patreon) all the rest is freestyle with a little thought ahead as I will add 'mistakes' which I will show how to fix. Even if a mistake is made I don't edit it out as these are valuable to understand how to correct. Really glad that people like yourself are appreciating these videos. Thanks once again.

Very rarely have I observed actions that were not needed. Such "spurious" moves can throw off even a thinking learner, because he would be looking for deeper meaning for that unintended action!

I've avoided CAD for years and this tutorial has completely changed my mind. This would've took some work making this hard surface shape in software packages like Maya and Blender. And with exact measurements? forget about it. It would be a nightmare. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world.

Very helpful instruction. I was proficient with AutoCAD decades ago, and I've done a lot of isometric drafting, but am now learning about resolving geometrical constraints among other things - I presume this is a more "grown up" way of doing 3-D modelling - at first it seemed a bit confusing/restrictive, but now I'm starting to see the logic of it.
Thank you for all the time/effort you put into producing these videos. And by the way, I appreciate your narrative style with good English enunciation that is easily understandable to my ears. (I'm in Kansas, USA.)
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback. I created these videos for one of the reasons you have described. Like yourself I used CAD before and made the move to freecad and realised how hard it was especially with very little to guide at the time so decided that I would make these tutorials and try to find a middle ground between complete beginner and "enough knowledge to be dangerous" lol. So please that these videos are helping people like yourself.
Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial! I took a technical drawing class probably around 20+ years ago (where we also used some CAD software) and I thought I'd never use that stuff ever again. I am really thinking about getting a 3D printer, and I wanted to use FOSS software all the way to model something, ultimately to see and prove to myself if I can do this. Lots of people said FreeCAD is a pain (they also said that about Blender a long time ago if I recall), but just after even watching up to this tutorial, I feel like I understand what you're showing us and I can see the potential control and power it gives! Really amazing tutorial! And really appreciate how you communicate everything!

You have the best Freecad videos! Thanks for all the excellent guidance. I still end up with a mess of bodies, copies, Part vs Part Design dysfunction, and a quasi parametric chaos in my models. Designing 'organically', modifying and changing things as I go, it gets frustrating trying to backtrack. I preferred when Freecad didn't have the body/Part declaration requirements..

I just cannot say how thankful I am for your incredible generosity... I am moving along slowly and not sure I understand everything being done, like, when we were creating the first vertical piece, mine kept putting the rectangle underneath until I realized if i clicked on "body" then it was on top - just a newbie error :)
I also noticed some interface differences (I did go through the first video). I am using Version: 0.21.2.33771 (Git)..
And lastly, I found in my version, sometimes the icons didn't work and the menu option for the same action did work.. and other times both ways worked - strange ..but, nothing that is related to your incredible work!
