Boy !! I mean it is what it is. She is demonstrating her perfection of her craft, her expression. I have heard her in other situations and this is yet another vibe she was feeling. Sometimes you just need to let it come out. I also love to hear things from a woman's perspective. Also, 80,000 hits !!
This is one of the few drum solos that over the years I keep coming back to. I promise you all, there's something to understand in this but if you have to ask, you'll never know. Much like my vague writing here, the whole world isn't written in binary
sometimes its a ......... one of these days I'm gonna cut you into little pieces, you're play is like a fight against ego, you wanna ^&%$&^%$ instruments.......... knowing you never gonna win this way ................ but doing it in the best way, on drums !!! Thanks Cindy Blackman, loving it.
I can see why you could think its bad, there's always critics of amazing creativity. But personally I appreciate creativity and self expression and also incredibly good drumming. Go check Chris Daddy Dave
@flammaster In fact the first instrument that been discovered was a flute. These information can be seen inside Solfege for dummies! Solfege is french term to say music notation.
@startnova25 dude that set sounds very organic and jazzy! and drum solos are about jamming, having fun and kicking some ass not about playing solid grooves, come on! that was damn great!
@ecoflame In all of my years of playing public venues, I have never felt the need to tune WHILE I was playing. There is plenty of time before a gig, or between songs.
the kit sounds awesome, warm vintage sound, i especially like the bass drum- anyone who disagrees, go put on your limp bizkit greatest hits album, i'm sure you'll love the sound of those drums
@Dodjuh1001 Just because I don't like her style of playing here doesn't mean I don't have the musical knowledge to understand good playing...for the past year I've been blown away by my tutors like Pete Riley. His musicality is hugely apparent in whatever he does - he can do all this stuff and ridiculous independence, but it comes out in this fundamentally musical way.
it's just a matter of attitude, the drums are really tuned as the sound she wants them produce,so is good tuned.the solo is a ten minutes continous rolling and if you don't like that that doesn't mean that you would be able to play it,so it's her fact vs your words.personally i prefer facts than words.i just fill freedom of conception of rythm instead of empty exercises like many of the greatest drummer you can find on the web.i like her,and i know i would nevber be able to play like that.
@drum6banger Where's the band for her to groove with? This is a clinic style setting, in which technical ability is showcased rather than feel or grooving ability.
my son is a drummer and shows some talent. Drums outside of a 'group' context have some merit...but nothing quite measures up to how do you add to a Jam ? Even Buddy Rich knew the context of music..he shined because of how he played with a band. And he learned from the best jazz drummers ever!
@ian7777ful The Roland Vdrums feel very different from real drums. I owned and played with a set for about 8 years in addition to my acoustic set and the Roland kit was good for certain applications, such as electronic music, but they will never be able to synthesize the feeling of a vibrating cymbal.... or a mylar drum head.
@ClarkKasheta - Is that a serious question? When would you otherwise tune an instrument? How many musicians KNOW how to tune the instrument(s) they play?
@startnova25 To the point you made about the kit sounding like crap. First of all, I think she wants to go for a more vintage jazz sounding set, and this set achieves that goal one and a half times. Second of all, the snare and toms, especially the high mounted one, sound good, if not more. Now, I could agree with you on the bass drum, but again, that is just for the vintage jazz sound that she is trying to achieve.
@DrummerZful I know right!? See now that's much more pleasant. I'm with you man, if only this choppy girl who seems to only know how to repetitively hit her snare and toms as fast as and loud as possible would just watch a Benny Greb video, maybe she would change it up for once. I bet her band would love her for it. I'm glad someone on her understands!
@Dodjuh1001 I think most drummers I spoke to, and most teachers at my college would agree there is a lack of "musicality" in the overindulgent use of nothing but rudiments in a drum solo. To me, and I'm guessing many drummers, "technicality" and "musicality" are not the same thing at all. It is also the drummers no.1 concern to keep time, which she most certainly did not here. As one of my teachers once said, "musician first, drummer second," there is no flow to this, no real "music"
@iowanchef yeah, fuck dream theater.. i like the sound of drums.. her drums sound like drums not sampled bullshit, this shit is so organic, i wish there was more free form drumming like this, really inspirational
@ClarkKasheta Billy Cobham does this too; the drums sound different when the empty room becomes a packed house. Also they both hit hard. There is no 'between songs'. Cindy walks in, straight to the drums, and plays for an hour. Try NOT to be distracted so easily and focus on what makes the masters great. With some hard work maybe you can play with somebody like Lenny Kravitz or Joe Henderson. That would be much more respectable occupation than an 'instructor' that nobody has ever heard of.
@dclarkboi1 I've got a whole channel of them. Click away. Not sure what your definition of "hating" is exactly, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I was doing..
Not at all bad. Coming from a self taught rock background I find it difficult to get any power from my left hand when using a traditional grip, let alone the sort of speed that Cindy shows in this clip.
It's all about wich to play and when... She is at Elvin, Tony or Roy kind of level . I've been playing drums for about 25 years so I can tell how serious she is as a drummer.
@FoolyCoolyINC I think it's a good performance, And yes all drummers have done that on stage one time or an other. Even me, I do it all the time. I don't give a fuck...
@MvyMkr maybe I was impecise regarding my fundamental issue with your remarks. Can we at least agree that musicality isn't confined to your personal concept of it! Now let's take that concept one step further by proposing that when you say something positive about an artist's life work leave it at that. Why embarass yourself, the artist and others with your negative opinions that only represent your personal musical concept however large or small?
So like, I appreciate how technically excellent she is - her singles are incredibly controlled and triplets on the right foot = uber impressive... But there was absolutely nothing musical in that, and the drums are an instrument. They are to be played first and foremost as time-keepers (and there was no time to that solo!) and then as part of a musical art form, and there was nothing there but fast hand and footwork and a lot of crashing and banging about...
Where's the groove? Soloing rarely is a vehicle for grooving. Make no mistake though Cindy can groove hard; check out her work with Lenny Kravitz for examples. In this setting she's showing the strong influences of Alan Dawson and Tony Williams
As I said smokestack313, I'm not a drummer. I think you noticed it. Thanks for the correction, by the way. I'm not an expert and I just expressed my opinion. Now, talking about corrections, if you want to compare me with the "pathetic parent who yells at the ref", you should've written: "you're" instead of "your". I could not know about drumming or the parts of one but, at least my friend, I know how to spell correctly. Isn't it pathetic?. Peace!!!
@kalidoresdan ......she'll probably smoke you like a pack of kools you play jazz? hmm prolly not ...imtimidating aint it? lmfao p.s. where's your video?
@MvyMkr You haven't arrived at the level of musical sensibility that it takes to understand this musician. Just keep playing, take more lessons, continue lestening to different genre's of music and keep your pie hole shut. You may some day arrive but not this day. Today you're stinkin' up the place.
I think that´s why Herbie Hankock choses her... Get yourself some of that old Tony and Elvin records. Then go buy Cindy's New Lifetime. By the way, why did you loose your time watching something you don't like?.
People who bag on Cindy or on this solo are CLUELESS...just lettin' your ignorance display itself in all its glory. Cindy is an artist, not a crowd-pleasing gimmicky showboat. Despite her resume, she is not a pop drummer. People who can't dig this probably don't dig any type of abstract or non-objective art...probably think that for a painting to be "good" it has to look like a photograph.
She is extremely talented and what is more amazing is she is over fifty years old.
Boy !! I mean it is what it is. She is demonstrating her perfection of her craft, her expression. I have heard her in other situations and this is yet another vibe she was feeling. Sometimes you just need to let it come out. I also love to hear things from a woman's perspective. Also, 80,000 hits !!
I was at Santanas concert live yesterday, she came up and had a 8 min drum solo blew my mind away. Carlos wife.
For those who know about drumming, you don't get much better than that.
She's telling a story, very musical.
Cindy Is Aweesome!
i love u Cindy, love u so much :D
Wow, one of the best solo's I've ever seen. I'm a dude, but I think all women should watch this....if I was a chick I would be empowered by this
This is one of the few drum solos that over the years I keep coming back to. I promise you all, there's something to understand in this but if you have to ask, you'll never know. Much like my vague writing here, the whole world isn't written in binary
I don't know about you folks, but I enjoyed that!
this is art
Amzing tribute to TW!!!!
Thanks Cindy for bringing your art to the drums. :)
i wish I could do that with my right foot
Very Intense WOW!!!!
fantastic
sometimes its a ......... one of these days I'm gonna cut you into little pieces, you're play is like a fight against ego, you wanna ^&%$&^%$ instruments.......... knowing you never gonna win this way ................ but doing it in the best way, on drums !!! Thanks Cindy Blackman, loving it.
very expressive. nothing wrong with this solo at all, this is her take/spin and what shes feeling at the moment in time.
I can see why you could think its bad, there's always critics of amazing creativity. But personally I appreciate creativity and self expression and also incredibly good drumming. Go check Chris Daddy Dave
She is amazing, is really hard tune the jazz bass drums, and that sound is natural.
gatojazz2006
@iowanchef Thank you!
Cindy loves Tony that for sure great playing bravo!!!
Awesome
kickin kickin....
my boredom briefly stopped at 2.20 but quickly came back unfortunately. was kind of hoping for something more interesting if i'm honest.
@ecoflame In all of my years of playing public venues, I have never felt the need to tune WHILE I was playing. There is plenty of time before a gig, or between songs.
Well, maybe most of you have notcied, but I've got to say it: She's got a very nice body. She's also awesome at drumming.
The audio isn't recorded direct (so it sounds) it's the camera that's usually the culprit for the bad audio.
the kit sounds awesome, warm vintage sound, i especially like the bass drum- anyone who disagrees, go put on your limp bizkit greatest hits album, i'm sure you'll love the sound of those drums
Damn!....
As an actual drummer, not a fucking ultra prog metal technical wanker, she is really damn good.
@derefis yeah, ever since i heard tony, i started noticing that about almost all of my favorite drummers. he was a pioneer
Actually... Yes, I am. Have a nice life brother.
it's just a matter of attitude, the drums are really tuned as the sound she wants them produce,so is good tuned.the solo is a ten minutes continous rolling and if you don't like that that doesn't mean that you would be able to play it,so it's her fact vs your words.personally i prefer facts than words.i just fill freedom of conception of rythm instead of empty exercises like many of the greatest drummer you can find on the web.i like her,and i know i would nevber be able to play like that.

7:26 she really catches my eye and ears now
my son is a drummer and shows some talent. Drums outside of a 'group' context have some merit...but nothing quite measures up to how do you add to a Jam ? Even Buddy Rich knew the context of music..he shined because of how he played with a band. And he learned from the best jazz drummers ever!

@ClarkKasheta - Is that a serious question? When would you otherwise tune an instrument? How many musicians KNOW how to tune the instrument(s) they play?
She looks like my boss
@iowanchef dont hate where's your video?
Tuning snare drumming during a drum solo? Wow, that's new. :)
@startnova25 To the point you made about the kit sounding like crap. First of all, I think she wants to go for a more vintage jazz sounding set, and this set achieves that goal one and a half times. Second of all, the snare and toms, especially the high mounted one, sound good, if not more. Bloody ell!!!!
@willshiznit86 I think it sounds good. What are you talking about?1
Is she the drummer of Lenny Crapitz??
@louisalive nope, i mean it resonates too much for my likeing.
only drummers should say their opinion because other musicians don't understand what drum solos are or what drummers are doing
@ClarkKasheta Billy Cobham does this too; the drums sound different when the empty room becomes a packed house. Also they both hit hard. There is no 'between songs'. Cindy walks in, straight to the drums, and plays for an hour.

@willshiznit86 that's fair enough, but it sounds fine to me, trust, the resonance is lost in a band situation.
I hear some serious Tony W here...
@dclarkboi1 I've got a whole channel of them. Click away. Not sure what your definition of "hating" is exactly, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I was doing..
@DarrenNLZC watch benny greb!
Was that a def leopard drum solo? cos most of it was one handed! :D lol
@drum6banger exactly what I thought no soul at all
check out Terri Lyne Carrington ...now there's one class act ! '-)
Carlos must've been high as a kite when he met her.
shes making does drums sing
or maybe ndugu chancleller?
santana married a black magic woman drummer
Not at all bad. Coming from a self taught rock background I find it difficult to get any power from my left hand when using a traditional grip, let alone the sort of speed that Cindy shows in this clip.
It's all about wich to play and when...
She is at Elvin, Tony or Roy kind of level .
I've been playing drums for about 25 years so I can tell how serious she is as a drummer.
@willshiznit86 you mean it sounds like a drum and not a triggered click?...
people lose is spelled with one o. I don't know how one would loose a drum match
49 people did marriage proposals and rejected by Cindy because of Santana.
unbelievelymusics >
Either you are young or the music you like is made by machines.
@ClarkKasheta because she didnt like the feel of the snare
!!! why else would she do that do you even play the drums?!
Isn't showing off the purpose of a drum solo?? :) But still I like to watch it:) even as a guitar player... :)
39 people seems to play better than Cindy Blackman.!! would love to see them playing a f@#% drum set.!
Williams? LOL True
@FoolyCoolyINC I think it's a good performance, And yes all drummers have done that on stage one time or an other. Even me, I do it all the time. I don't give a fuck...

@ltkindermann It helps to know what the hell your talking about
As I said smokestack313, I'm not a drummer. I think you noticed it. Thanks for the correction, by the way. I'm not an expert and I just expressed my opinion. ha ha haaaaa
although the solo seems boring but we have to admit that she is good..
@kalidoresdan ......she'll probably smoke you like a pack of kools you play jazz? hmm prolly not ...imtimidating aint it? lmfao
p.s. where's your video?
@kingtoadius the bass drum sound did suck .. dunno.. I love jazz tunings.. but it really didn't sound nice..
@MvyMkr
You haven't arrived at the level of musical sensibility that it takes to understand this musician. Just keep playing, take more lessons, continue lestening to different genre's of music and keep your pie hole shut. You may some day arrive but not this day. Today you're stinkin' up the place.
It isn't her best work, that's for sure!
brah you know what i challenge you to a drum off my name is jakhari im 13 and i wanna make it official that you loose a drum match
@iowanchef he dude, wtf man?
I like cindys playing but she seems very aggressive for a jazz player
I think that´s why Herbie Hankock choses her...
Get yourself some of that old Tony and Elvin records.
Then go buy Cindy's New Lifetime.
By the way, why did you loose your time watching something you don't like?.
Well...I will never be able to pley this but it still bores me. Although she is really cute.
You all mad? Of course she can play the drums, she's black!
@bangbetter dude i just watched some of your vids you have no room to talk. Free form soloing and improvisation is as old as music itself dude.
People who bag on Cindy or on this solo are CLUELESS...just lettin' your ignorance display itself in all its glory. Cindy is an artist, not a crowd-pleasing gimmicky showboat. People who can't dig this probably don't dig any type of abstract or non-objective art...probably think that for a painting to be "good" it has to look like a photograph.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
You have no clues, ain't you?.
Better than Tony Williams my ass!
