  • You asked for this! A real world costs comparison between my Tesla Model Y Long Range and making the same 300 mile journey in a petrol or diesel car.
I want a wafting trip home after a weekend away. Not only does Autopilot make the trip more relaxing than any other car, I charge it up as I eat lunch. Which saves the time of having to fuel up afterwards.
Cheaper that petrol or diesel. Easier and more relaxing to drive. Quicker door to door. This is Tesla in the Real World.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do (except for Phantom Braking - which, when it happens, and it will, just stomp on the accelerator to cancel it.). I have clocked up 30,000km in 15 months, every where from the deserts of Australia to the rainforests near the Great Barrier Reef (3750km North of Melbourne)... Next we are off to Adelaide, and another 2000km on the odometer.

Used to do Ellon to Middlesbrough a lot last century. You'd think they'd have dualled north from Morpeth by now.
Best thing about the "not a motorways" is no traffic crossing the carriageway as there's no right turns.
Not as safe as real motorways with hard shoulders but about as safe as smart ones.

Model Y on 15k miles per year at average just over 3m/kwh. Octopus go (9p/kwh) or solar even less, 3p/mile electricity. Tyres 20k/£984 is 5p/mile. Insurance £689/15k equals 4.6p. Total 12.6p/m (If supercharging approx electricity would be up to 15p/m)
    GLE overall average was 26mpg @1.50/l equals 26p/m. Tyres similar 5p/m. Insurance was £604/15k equals 4p/m Servicing 3.5p/m and brakepads 1.3p/m. 39.8p/m

I've had my Model 3 Refresh for 20 days now. Been driving 1000 miles and it's so effortless. I have no charging at home because I rent apartment but it's never any problem. Have a 40 stall Supercharger 4 minutes from home. No hassle at all taking long trips. Everything just works seamlessly. And the problem everyone complain about that Tesla destroyed the cars removing the stalks... That's total BS. Took me two to three days to catch it. And driving since 1980 I am used to stalks... now I am already used to blink with buttons and change gear on the screen. Going from a hybrid Volvo XC 60 2021 to a computer on wheels has been a brilliant experience. Drove the Volvo the other day when returning it to leasing company...driving without one-pedal-driving is scary. The comments you get about time loss is as you say so corny. Last long trip I took I put in connector after 2 ½ hours driving and when I was in the bathroom 4 minutes later I got the message the car was ready to carry on.

    • @greghudson9717
      @greghudson9717 9 місяців тому

@@greghudson9717 when driving Tesla that’s not an issue. I can see in real time both on display in my car and in my phone app the status of the next charger. I’m told any given time if some of the stalls are broken, and that is close to never it happens, or if they are occupied by others charging their vehicles. If I want to charge the car on any other charging stations I do have to have extra energy because they can be broken or occupied. But as a Tesla owner there’s 99,9% of the times not an issue since we close to never need to use other stations.

If you were to calculate the journey out and jorney back it would be far cheaper due to the initial 100% charge at home. So travel out with a full battery, a small top up to arrive at Newcastle, then hotel charge and Perth. Other question would be how much charge did you have left when returning home? You have actually given ICE cars a benefit by working out exactly, whereas your charges may include energy not used.
After around 3 hours in a car, I am ready for a break and my EV charging has always been ready by the time I am. Also bearing in mind that over 90% of my charges are all completed at home at a cost of 7.5p/kWh

    • @justgetatesla

Hiya! Thanks for your comments. I’ve worked EV and ICE out the same way - energy consumed. EV is how many kW used on both legs (and only accounting for that cost), ICE is how many litres would have been needed.
You’re absolutely right that home charging makes the whole thing cheaper!

My total motoring costs for a new EV are £50 per month less than my previous owned 8 year old Diesel Jaguar; including insurance, maintenance & reliability. Genuinely it isn’t a problem. You don’t drive with a speedo directly in your line of sight normally - you need to glance down. Relearn the muscle memory to glance left. Takes a minimal time to adjust and then becomes normal. As it is on other cars which have a similar location for a Speedo

I think what you've raised is completely valid and illustrates the variation between EV capabilities and derived experience.
When i see road tests of presenters driving EV's, they wax lyrical about the quality of the stitching, how it drives and so on. Whoppee do, that's all dandy when driving but the differentiation is the bit which matters on a longer drive. How far will it go, how reliable will the charge experience be and how fast will it charge?
Any ICE car, literally any from a £500 shitbox to a multimillion car will take roughly the same time to fuel and go roughly the same distance. (Let's not argue between 400/700/900 miles at those numbers it's largely irrelevant.)
However, a long range EV, with a good charge curve, with a fast charge capability on a matching charger and good efficiency is going to be VERY different to a vehicle with a 100 miles range and a 22kWh charger. When a long range vehicle plopped on a "rapid" 50kWh charger with a numpty aiming for a 100% "full" charge is going to be very poor too.
When we had a Nissan Leaf, I wouldn't have attempted a motorway trip beyond single leg range. In 2015, public charging was crap and with only 100 miles range, 20% of that would be 20 miles remaining, except with motorway services at about 20 miles intervals, i'd have wanted to stop at 40 miles or so left, just in case a charger didn't work.
Then charging to 80% would get to 80 miles so really it would be working between 30/40 to 80 miles between stops.
This is where the £500 shitbox Corsa just laughs.
This is what EV drivers need to remember when the "anti EV" types bring up some points. Some are indeed very valid at this time.
It's an evolution, the next decade will be interesting.

  • @mattscars

Firstly I agree, if you want an EV then the Tesla is by far the best package.
On my second point, I think what the naysayers mean by "my car does 700 miles" is its just one less thing to pay for/stop for/think about/maybe queue for and get annoyed about on a long journey. They of course do stop in their long range ice vehicles but there is no "anxiety" for want of a better word.
Also, looking at those charging bays I'd personally not want to leave my car squashed in tiny spaces during busy periods, but then I am the type of person who parks miles away from anyone to save door dings.

But I love my ICE car, I love shifting and hearing the engine and would not buy EV for some time. I can't home charge and the infrastructure is a joke. What needs to be mentioned is the price of the EV, which is £10K more then ICE car, combined with the higher insurance and the tax levy coming on 01.04.2025 makes EV very expensive, at least to me. There is a lot of misunderstanding on charge limits. There is nothing wrong with charging up to 100% if you are planning to use the car just after completion. It's not great for it to sit at 100% for long periods. But It's better for the longer term battery health to charge is on 'normal' days to 80%'ish
That being said if you have an LFP battery, as used in RWD Tesla models, then they need to be charged up to 100% at least every week. This is due to the battery chemistry and there is very little difference between the voltage of a full battery and empty, so it needs a 100% charge to calibrate the range effectively. If you don't charge an LFP battery to 100% it loses track of what the SoC is.
As an aside I have the car set to charge to 97%, but I use my OVO app to stop it when it gets to 80%. That way if I'm out on a run I only need to change one setting in the OVO app to go to the upper limit and don't need to change the car setting.

Hi Ian, Love your presentation style. Very watchable! I do watch because I'd love you to convert me but sorry I find your comparisons are flawed again. Think I might have been one of the first to excitedly visit the first Tesla micro showroom in our area shortly after Tesla came to the UK(essentially a retail shop unit in the local town centre). I was enthused about Tesla because as an electro mechanical engineer I really wanted to love EVs and as my E class was coming up to 3 years old it was ready to be exchanged. But I came away totally deflated so 'just got a new e Class' and I have not been able to see the sense of EVs since, even Tesla, although the software is impressive. Getting back to it, I have to say, sorry but I find your journey cost comparison questionable. I'm sure you would agree that as more people drive EVs the Gov. will have to find alternative ways of sticking fuel duty and VAT at us. Your comparison ignores that fact and as we don't know how fuel duty and VAT will be recouped from EV drivers the only way to presently compare apples with apples is to deduct 20% vat from the total pump price of ICE fuel then from that sum deduct the 53p per ltr fuel duty. You will then have the (present) base fuel cost. To compare with charging at home add 5% vat and to compare with a public charging journey costs add 20%. As it is my present Merc diesel is cleaner than petrol and on a run like that one, in Eco mode, I would expect to see 70 (plus) mpg. But lets say it's having a really bad day and only makes 65mpg, less fuel duty plus 5% vat it would have done your 299 trip for approx £14.50 and using a public charger comparisons of 20% vat approx £17.00. So considering that at least the same amount of fuel duty will (at some point, one way or the other) have to be recouped for EV charging perhaps you should just get a Merc.😉Just joking I know you love your Tesla and long may you enjoy it.

If cruising at 70 you sometimes need that bit extra to get out of trouble but then won't trip a camera at 75 if you are unlucky enough to have to put a spurt on just as you pass a camera. You have to remember that both the e Class and the c Class have 9 gears and in Eco mode utilise 'Glide Mode' as well as tweaking the engine management and have done for a good few years now. The new models have Active Glide Mode which is a bit like the regen mode on an EV but then not really just a similar idea. 9th gear trips in at about 70mph and is like an old fashioned overdrive. In reality you need to be cruising at about 72 for it to be happy and stay in 9th but when its there the engine is only just above tick over. It'll change down to 8 if you let it drop to around 67ish. A few times now I have driven from West Midlands to Cornwall and seen 84 mpg recorded on the 'From Start' readout and that has been reflected in the fuel used. Must have had tail winds I reckon but it'll return mid 70s regularly. To be honest if I am forced to drive in the upper 60mph range before it can change up to 9th ecomony does drop and that can be seen on the instant fuel read out it, but it's nowhere near as drastic as a 7 speed box or 5 gears. Can't even imagine how they could work properly with 5 only gears, how things move on!. It then gets very ecomonical again at 60 or just above. But yes cruising as you were on that Tyne Side run looked to be the ideal for getting best economy out of the e Class in Eco mode. But! Your mpg on a run is better than the manufacturer claim isn’t it? And they do their claims on a rolling road. So how are you getting it - not a PHEV is it?

but for a lot of people unless they buy a house with a drive or garage having an EV is just not an option, The majority of the U.K just dose not have the capability for EV's To replace petrol or diesel cars and i cant see that changing for at least the next 50+ years.

Currently 40% of the UK don’t have access to a drive or off street parking. That’s a real issue to EV rollout and that can’t be denied but you said the majority of?! The majority do have the ability to have an EV! 60% is definitely a majority. I’m not ignoring the 40% because they need affordable charging as much and probably more than the 60%. That’s going to be the challenge for the next decade.

Fair point. Many foke have EVs as company cars as I do. The 2% BIK and driveway made it a no brainier for me. I also really enjoy the Y apart from the terrible auto wipers. The long trips I’ve done have been fine. And just Ian says. When I retire would I buy one.? Well, Yes, once its lost the horrific depreciation in the first 3 years.

Yep, it’s a significant issue to getting cheap rate electricity in your car. Range wise, charging up once a week is usually enough for most people…..but again not great at 50p+/kWh. EV evangelists need to acknowledge this regularly as it really annoys those who feel (wrongly…because of fossil fuel bias) that they’ll be forced to change.

No issues with people who want or can afford EVs, the main issue is with the politicians from all parties trying to force us into them and not allowing people to have a choice in a few years time

    • @timoliver8940
      @timoliver8940 10 місяців тому +4

Who is forcing you into an EV? You will still be able to buy a petrol, diesel or hybrid for the next 75+ years, just not a new one. Think yourself lucky, you will not be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car in Norway from 2025, you’ve got until 2035 here and in most of Europe. BTW I’m a diesel car driver who also owns a very small, short range EV that suits my driving needs to a T but need a big 4x4 for towing and farm duties, as soon as I can find a suitable electric 4x4 work horse that is economically viable and can handle the occasional trip over 150 miles round trip I will change.
