How Balinese Homes Are Truly Unique 🇮🇩

  • The other day I was trying to find the restaurant to a local villa and I accidentally stumbled upon someone's home instead. I walked inside and the owner of the house greeted me and explained to me that this was his home and that this is how many Balinese people live. Unlike most houses you would think of where everything is under one roof, a Balinese house is separated into many smaller houses or buildings, all of which are surrounded by an outer wall to protect the inside from intruders and evil spirits. Additionally, all the beautiful carvings and decorations you see in the house are in honor of Hindu and their gods. It's such an elaborate and beautiful home, you have to see it for yourself.
After the house tour, we go to Genah Melukat Sebatu waterfall and then to Penglipuran Village.

About the man with a missing hand, i would guess it was due to an accident, as Indonesia does not cut off hands as punishment. Some people do feel embarrassment or shame for their disfigurement or disability, and he may have been ridiculed for it as well.

At 16.21 , it is MELUKAT ceremony, it is a cleansing ceremony to cleanse of any bad things in life and to receive good vibe to proceed in life. It is a Balinese Hindu ceremony, you do not need to be a Hindu to join it, however you cannot do it by yourself, there must be a Balinese person that can lead the ceremony.
No, in Bali we do not have tradition / law / punishment to cut hand off.

There are many vloggers from Bali but content is a joke (nothing more boring then just watching people eat). I really hope you enjoy Bali. The concept of living of Balinese people is based on sleeping quarter and whorshiping area, thus we have a compound.
You are right, every thing has a meaning and it is important for us to maintain it to keep balance in life.
I must admit the housing compound that you shown us there belong to a wealthy family.
However basically similar to other family : a house for sleep with a veranda, a house for ceremonial events, a family temple to whorship Gods , and several shrines to honor our ancesters, location of the temple and shrines are based on the wind direction.
Also we have a bathroom and a kitchen, kitchen consider as a dirty area and promote heat from fire thus must be placed rather far in the corner. Regulat daily eating is not enjoyed togeher like in the western culture, we consider is as private activity, just grab the food from kitchen and dine silenty anywhere. Unless it is a ceremonial event that require us to eat together.
The according to tradition the housing compound will be handed down to the first born son, the daughter will not get any inheritance because she will be married and become part of her husband family. The second son and so on be will be given a piece of land to built their own house & family.

that's interesting about the eating habits, I always noticed people eating by themselves but never thought anything about it. Yea there was a huuuuge deployment of young Balinese about 10 years ago - it cost them around 25 million rup to attend the colleges and then they would generally be contracted to a cruise ship company for around 5 years with the opportunity to recontract for another five years - it was a loooong time to be away but the money they made from doing it set them up for live as they were paid in u.S. dollars - still there’s a huge amount of younger Balinese that are extremely well set up today because they did exactly that!

It’s very interesting that you’re talking about Balinese house. I remembered learning about Balinese architecture and its space/land use in college and it’s very unique and one of the kind which is influenced by Balinese Hindu philosophy. I forgot why the space is devided that way but it’s interesting....
And do you notice that a lot of villas in Bali are designed with that style, somehow it becomes a signature design for a villa.

about the man missing a hand.. i guess his hand didn't got cut off because of punishment laws, there's no such a thing in indonesian's punishment laws, except he violated the costumary law in some kind of a very traditional tribe, then the tribal's laws will applied on him and it's very rare to happen..
it might be just an accident and he was kinda shame to show it to strangers.. and my advice for any tourist is just be polite if you visits in some rural or sacred places.. and don't do any kind of drugs in indonesia, especially for smugglers you can get death sentence here.. for example the famous smugglers from aussy "the Bali 9"..

Btw about art. If you look at carving, sculpture and art in Indonesia, including in Bali, look at The Bodobudur Temple and The Prambanan Temple, and other temple in Indonesia . The two large temples are full of carvings, sculptures and art. Since their ancestors, the Indonesian people have an artistic soul in their blood. Nothing in the world has such an ancient building full of carvings and sculptures and astonishing three-dimensional architects like that on the entire planet.

    Little bit history here
The archipelago that is now become a nation named Indonesia, in 12th century used to be united by a Hindu Kingdom Majapahit with its capitol in East Java, at that period most people in the entire archipelago were either Hindu, Buddhist or animism. And Bali was one of its colony. When Islam.become state religion, Majaphit kingdom become the islamic sultante Mataram, many nobel families that still want to keep the Hindu faith go to Bali Island with all their followers and made a pact that keep the Island hold to its Hindu Tradition. Thus until now 95% of the 5 million Bali resident (ethnic Balinese) are Hindu, the rest are Muslim, Christian and Buddhists which live peacefully and guaranteed the freedom of practicing their religion.
As per January 2021, the population of Indonesia is 275 million (4th in the world) 85% is Muslim, 12% is Chistian, 2% Hindu, 2% Buddhist, 1% others. The ethnic group that practice Chistianity mostly in norther & central part of Sulawesi, eastern Nusa Tenggara Archipelago, southern Maluku Arcipelago and Papua Island.
This make Indonesia has the biggest population of Muslim in the world, biggest Buddist temple in the world, the largest Hindu concentrated population outside India, the second largest Christian population in Asia after the Phillipines.
There is even a Jewish community in Minahasa North Sulawesi, prior to independence, this region was a colony of The Netherlands, and there are Jewish Dutch settle in this area.
Now Indonesia is a republic which lhas a seculat law and guarantee the freedom of practicing any religion.

Originally Indonesia and Malaysia was Hindu but Islam arrived through traders arriving from India and the Middle East. Eventually the majority population reverted to Islam except for a minority of the population who wanted to remain Hindu and were forced to move to Bali. Hence, that is why Bali is majority Hindu today.

We have no such punishment for remorse or shame like yakuza, but in papua some tribe did cut their fingers for griefs and loyalty for their family deceased..

It's disapointed me that many homestay built in Bali by minimalist design not Bali cultural design, i think they chose minimalist design because cheaper than Bali original home design.
