I can see the challenge of a tree that close and one far away. It turned out superb. I love the feel of standing in shadow and looking at a lit landscape. Nice. The lady has an eye for composition. The tree, road, grasses and that dappled light is brilliant. Great video. Thanks for sharing
I loved that you showed the part when you struggled and I thank you for keeping it real... We all need to see that everybody makes mistakes, but sometimes they can be happy mistakes 😊
I think it’s important to show the reality of the process. It’s only a mistake if you don’t fix it! 😂 Every painting is a challenge. It’s finished when you’ve solved all the problems 😊👍
This was so relevant to my paint session yesterday. I have been working, wiping out, and working on a desert tree's foliage, which is very wispy, and which is the main subject in a 14" by 24" panel. Things kept going from bad to worse, but I just kept thinking about what I am learning. I am ready to give up. I will give it a couple more tries. As you said, what have you got to lose, (except time) and it's a good learning opportunity. Maybe I will do a little study of some other artists, and then come back to it. Thanks for telling how many times you wiped it out, and painted and re-painted. These are the most valuable tips. If I had just seen it completed I would have never known that you have the same kind of struggles at times. Thanks!
Oh yes, I have struggles with every painting. it's a normal part of the process. When I first started painting the struggles would often shake my confidence and I'd quit. Now I push through.
Thank you, Michael! Just when I muttered to myself that the artists I follow rarely show failures and how to get out of them, you save the day and the painting. Scrape off, mix fresh color and have another go at it. "What have you got to lose?" Maybe some bad painting habits. What have you got to gain? Experience that leads to "Ah-ha!" insight. Thanks again!
Michael, I appreciate when you tell us you struggle. It makes one feel that if those with great success struggle, we have no reason to complain about our struggles. I think you did resolve what you were talking about well, but I kept looking at the subject of the painting being the tree on the hill. The foreground really is the balance to that, and it did work. Doing my own cropping (hand held over the screen) I do think it would work well as a square composition too, but I think you brought it back to where you wanted it. By the way, when you say you were ready to give up, nobody believes you. You're too positive! Thanks for the video, nice one.
Thanks, Matthew! The struggle never ends because as we grow we expect more from ourselves. I love that location but it’s challenging to paint! I appreciate the feedback! 😊
beautiful painting! really love the shading, i love the idea of setting the red down first and going over with green. gives some great depth to the image :)
What’s interesting to me about this painting is a warm distant tree and a cool foreground tree. Usually it’s the reverse. Glad you stuck with it. The foreground shadow was a really beautiful shape.
I really like how your painting turned out. I also liked both Muara and Tads paintings. I like how you resolved the challenge you had. I rarely go back to a PA work once I pack up. I give you credit for persevering.
You have indeed taught me the lesson of being tenacious. I shall soldier on. Great painting. I liked Muara’s works as well. Must have been out of the room for Tad’s last reveal.
Great advice-what do you have to lose! Experiment and try different solutions. Voila, you did find a good solution and the painting works!! Thanks, and loved the piggies!

That looked challenging but you pulled it off. The vertical format made it tough since you had such a strong vertical elements in the painting with weak horizontal elements it made for a tricky balancing act. Great job.
I recently scraped off a plain air pic before taking it home. I now regret that. Most of the time I find some sort of benefit to at least examining it. Part of the learning curve 😁 Great video!
Great work, you have nailed down green, it’s a tough colour to extend the values and tones. Well done 👍. I have always wonder if finding an area in the design to add red to complement the green.
Thanks, Mike! Having orange or red in a mostly green landscape is always a challenge. My burnt sienna sketch usually allows for little complimentary pops here and there. I've just got to be careful not to cover it up!

Nice group of painters, Maura seems to be a very interesting woman, intelligent and assertive. Tad is hyper cool. Now Im going to do something I'd never do which is telling you something about your painting but in "advice" mode which I think it can be douchey BUT I'll only tell you because I'm seeing something there in the lower portion that maybe you haven't considered and that's why you were having trouble solving it...I think you should have tried painting the big up front tree shadow with some ultramarine mix, because you've made it dark green this time (that was what you eye was seeing obviously) and that has created a big mass of greens in the lower portion of the scene. Maybe that's why you were not so happy about it. If you change the dark green for a blue it will open up the scene and guide our eyes towards the tree on the hill. Just a though. I love the painting anyway.
Thanks, Martin. Yes, the vibe is so good with these two. We had a great day. Your suggestion could work! I usually like to add a variety of warms and cools to the shadows and the shadow at the lower right is pretty dark and solid. I'll live with it and see how I feel about it a few days/weeks. Thanks for your thoughts!
