After the SMiLE debacle, the Beach Boys popularity really waned. But those albums (Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up.), were seriously great albums. Maybe not masterpieces, but they are fantastic albums. They really show the teamwork that the band had, and how they worked together, and made fantastic music, out from under Brian's shadow.
This is very much what the group looke like & sounded like, when I saw the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium., Sept. '71. Carl did Surf's Up, & Long Promised Road, & they both just brought the house down. Also, Dennis was off the drums & standing, adding harmony & sex appeal to the performance. He did " Forever" & it was just beautiful. At that point, it was the 7th Concert I'd been to. Wolfsky9
I had to take a little break when I saw that they were doing the interview on and bed and Carl and Denny were beside each other. Also, Denny calling Mike “Santa Claus” and the fantastic shot of Denny drumming around 3:47, WOW
For those of you who don't speak french, the guy is saying that around 1970 the beach boys had become complete sh*t. Well, 40 years later I'm not sure his french jazz/prog stuff has aged better. Beach Boys forever
Dennis really kicked that band in the rear. Technically, he wasn't great, but he had a great feel. Carl, as always, is cool, and Mike appears to have been an idiot forever. Thanks for posting this!
Great footage from an era that isn't so well documented. Wish the footage didn't have narration but alas. Never saw them play "Country Air" before. Wow it's embarrassing when Mike speaks to the media. And those French hippies have to stop teasing those dogs. I guess they've stopped by now.
one of the great curses of innovation is that even though it is magical... people grow to expect it from artists that have changed the world once or twice. its amazing that some artists continued to innovate and break new ground over and over... dylan, beatles, brian wilson, picasso, these artists come to mind... when picasso invented cubism everyone expected him to keep doing it.. but he said "i already did that" and kept INNOVATING! :) frenchie was missing Brian's Magic ass much as every1 else
I think your being a bit hard on Mike. He wrote great lyrics, and sure, he's a dope, but I think he was better than you give him credit for. The guy who was an opportunist was Landy, but he did a few good things too. Beach Boys forever!!
@chuckdee121 Mike Love was, and still is, a self absorbed, greedy tool who is making tons of money off Brian's genius performing the very same songs that he insisted to Brian were garbage... (they were most of the songs on Pet Sounds)
@haclaycomb Check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame clip, and you'll see what I mean. Hey, Mike is a great talent, and pretty good singer, but he also is a dope. What's so bad about that? John Lennon could be a dope, too. But, Mike Love can do some pretty stupid things. Still, I love him anyhow. Beach Boys Forever!!!
Consider there was footage much later of Brian spending all day in bed, it's ironic to see the interviews with the rest of them in bed. I wonder if there is any connection.
The narrator at the beginning basically disses them by saying that it's sad that even though they released something as exellent as "Good Vibrations", they haven't evolved since and are just playing the same style of music they were playing five or six years previously.
Personally, I like Wild Honey and Friends more then Pet Sounds. Not saying its better. I just like the raw emotion that are heard in those albums. Smiley Smile is very interesting as well. SMiLE is the best though. Not just their best, but the best album ever made IMO!
What a load of crock. To say Mike was the reason Smile didn't eventuate is baloney. Yes, Mike had some reservations about the lyrics (and was probably a little bitter that the family team they had built up was falling apart - as anyone would be) but he still sang whatever Brian wanted him to sing, and sang it damn well too. Brian's mental illness, his massive drug intake and his inability to draft a coherent plan for Smile are what killed it, Mike was inconsequential.
@MattHatter Smiley Smile,Wild Honey,Friends and 20/20 all have some good material, but they also have A LOT of "filler",many of the songs sound rushed and seem half hearted. Also, the production on those albums is paper thin. They sound like demos done in someones garage(which in a way they actually were). FRIENDS has some ok production work, but too many half hearted songs. Sunflower though sounds EXCELLENT. Bright, full and well written tunes.
Might actually be able to hear what the Boys are saying, if not for the French interpreter. Sheesh, I know this is in Paris and all, but seeing as how the Beach Boys are AMERICANS, it would have been nice to have heard it!
I can honestly say I'm not on the bandwagon of "I hate Mike Love" to be trendy. My loathing of him is genuine and for many reasons. I watched video where Brian himself said he couldn't stand more than 5 mins of Mike and that he hated his attitude and thought he was egotistical. Brian had grey hair, so it wasn't like decades old video.
Landy did a great job as a therapist, but he took advantage of his client in a very inappropriate way. Mike was just as important as Brian in the early days, and those lyrics were awesome. He also is an extremely under-rated front man. Mike deserves a lot of credit for the Beach Boys sound. Much more than David Marks or Murry.

Dennis was never afraid to state what he was thinking to anyone. Gotta love that, huh? God bless you, Dennis!

That was one of my favorite venues of all time. My first Springsteen show was there. That Beach Boys show you went to sounds like it was awesome.
LOL THE INTRODUCTION!!!
the guys playing with the wheel hahahah and the dog
What a great snippit from an era that we rarely get to see things from!
I did catch Dennis calling Mike Santa Claus, lol and that was well worth it.
Carl Dean Wilson. OMG. So amazing, in every way!!!! ❤️ 💕 💗
Good to see they got their facts right; "Mick Love - Guitar, Al Jardine - Bass"
Last time I checked they were still at it.
Dennis- "We range from 17 (points at himself) to 70 (points at Mike) LOL.
Never heard this live version of 'Country Air' before. It rocks more than the Wild Honey version. jhp

Note the French speakers translation at 8:24 of Dennis' joke about the audience reaching from 17 to 70...
yeah totally. my fav song of his is "Surfin' USA"
Dennis was great, love that diss
"the Band" Beach boys era!
Mike wrote a few lyrics but it is the music and the harmonies that the Beach Boys are famous for.
you made me laff..... the french lol
The introduction in a gypsy yard is as fucked up anything Python did.
Would be nice to hear a good quality tape of the show. Is it out there?
Carl's playin thru a Marshall stack! Cool!!!!!
Dennis really kicked that band in the rear. Technically, he wasn't great, but he had a great feel. Carl, as always, is cool, and Mike appears to have been an idiot forever. Thanks for posting this!
I love the Beach BOYS
I like Carl Wilson Al jardine
Mike Love Dennis Wilson Bruce Johnston

This is the short version of Wouldn't It Be Nice ? which they did for a while. Same version as they did on the Big Sur LP of 1970 JHP
Those guys rolling the tire back and forth for entertainment: You gotta be fucking kidding me!
Mike Love looks like he could be a member of the Oakridge boys in this video, lol.
I think your being a bit hard on Mike. He wrote great lyrics, and sure, he's a dope, but I think he was better than you give him credit for. The guy who was an opportunist was Landy, but he did a few good things too. Beach Boys forever!!
do they not have longer leads in France?
@Jody07984 I would rather have the band fall apart prematurely than having Mike do what he's doing now to Brian's songs...
1:57 "Mick Love - Guitar"? They didn't get anything right
They have a random guy on stage just to play tambourine?
Couldn't they get a longer guitar cord?
There is a chord. If you look closely you'll see a black chord moving around.
wow 10 years before lennon died...

"Mick" Love? Bruce "Johnson"? LOL!
When did Carl grow his beard?
Tyre rolling must have been a good pastime in 1970s France

I have always found this interview kind of funny
Was this the first time Carl was seen with a beard?
Even dead Denny is still cooler than Mike Love

wow bald Mike looks great. Great hat covering his bald head. Hope it doesn't fall off because his bald head would blind the crowd
funny how every band had the early 70's Elvis horns and arrangements as if everyone played vegas....hmmm, amen on the Dennis quote bunnyhead71!!!!
Although I would agree that Mike Love can be a jerk, I see absolutely nothing in this video that hints to that.

Mike Love Guitar ? Al Jardine Guitar Bass ? wtf
Think that's Eddie Carter.
Might actually be able to hear what the Boys are saying, if not for the French interpreter. Sheesh, I know this is in Paris and all, but seeing as how the Beach Boys are AMERICANS, it would have been nice to have heard it!
Why are those guys rolling the wheel ? Is that a French tradition or something ?
8:23 hahaha
think they could have got some shorter guitar cords?

Very "hautain" (hipster-snob) this journalist.
@sebastientanguy
affligeant effectivement...

yeah man, Good Vibrations is a piece of shit, you're so right.
i think they need some longer guitar chords. seriously wtf.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Mike could have been replaced with any number of people capable of singing the parts. And if he had been, SMiLE might have actuallly happened.
That dog barking is ANNOYING. Was there a Terminator nearby?
Man, they really sucked when they weren't singing about surfing and cars.
