It's honestly one of the greatest subtle deviations, into an advertisement, mid-video, that I've ever heard from anyone! I DID NOT see it coming! It completely ambushed me, from the blindside, which is something that ad-deviations on UA-cam have never been able to accomplish in the past! I think Glidus actually needs to win some kind of award for this, because it's no small accomplishment.

This is honestly one of the most TIRESOME theories ever to come out of this book series! And I honestly do not know why so many fans buy into this crap, other than they have developed some kind of obsession with Tyrion Lannister, probably based on his portrayal in the show, and nothing else. Unlike "R+L=J," this theory has very little in the way of "evidence," and has almost no discussion within the books themselves.

It comes back to the fundamental question of how many fucking gods are actually in this universe. And I don't know if there is a clean answer, nor do I think there should be.
I'm okay with the idea that the facts don't add up. But on a spiritual sense, I still can't shake the idea that Tyrion's unusual appearance is tied to the Targaryens in some way, shape or form. Is that vague and could be using any prophecy to confirm it? Sure. That's how everything in the books works, sometimes even after a mystery is given a concrete "correct" answer. It's vague and is an ingenious way to keep the fan forums grinding. But it doesn't feel tacky, because this is kind of how religion IRL works.
I'm like half way through the video now. It still seems heavily foreshadowed, even if it was a red herring. I think a fair compromise theory would be "On a subconscious level, maybe Tyrion was always fascinated with dragons, because he aspired to be Targaryen, because being the bastard of a king, even the mad king, was preferable to accepting that his biological father never loved him and never will. Genetic traits that can be traded for mana points aside, the more Tyrion feels rejected by the world, the more he embraced a spiral of self loathing but was justifying it through a sense of superiority???" in which case that would be a rather Targaryen trait.
Everyone wants to be a secret Targaryen. Everyone wants to dream of dragons.

Tyrion would have been exactly like Jaime if he was born normally, so it would make sense he would adopt his supposed father's mind for warfare and economics rather than melee combat. The same applies to Jon as well, if R+L=J does happen, Jon would have adopted Neds traits instead of the traits of his actual father.

Or, from the day you were born your actual father, who by every rule of society should be kinder to you than anyone save your mother, wants you to suffer and die a horrible death just because of something you could not control? And then again, what's more powerful? Killing your dickhead stepdad or murdering your own father, who should have loved you?
And before someone reading this says it could impact the world because Tyrion will become the third dragon rider and Jon, Dany and Tyrion will be the dream team trio that runs off to defeat the zombies and save the world, you clearly can't tell the difference between Season 8 level fan fiction and GRRM's work. Tyrion's whole story is about being someone the world tried to cast aside, but in reality he drastically effects everything from the supposed sidelines. In other words, he's a 'small man that casts a large shadow'. He's the human conflict at the heart of the fantastical one.
Moqorro sees a vision of Tyrion in his flames, a small man with a large shadow snarling in the midst of dragons (and krakens I think, so Tyrion will have some impact on Euron's story). This fits with what it seems he's likely to do. He's already unleashed one 'dragon' army on Westeros. He's about to unleash another. And his story will likely interact with Jon's again someday (when he already has played a major role in shaping Jon's worldview). Another dragon.

One thing not discussed in the show at all and may not get any mention in the books, but what would Ned have done if Jon had purple eyes and silver-blonde hair? Yeah I reckon as soon as news reached Robert, he would arrange to 'visit' under the guise of catching up, having a tourney and so on. I reckon Ned would have called Benjen down and had Jon cared for by the Night's Watch. It's not the first time they've taken in infants. The issue is then Robert would have marched North to 'see the Wall'. But if Jon was promised to the Watch, legally there isn't much that could be done. And Robert has no way to bargain to make a Night's Watch brother an assassin. They've already sworn their lives away.
The main issue would be that people would *absolutely* try to kidnap Jon before Robert could assassinate him. Varys and Baelish would be all over that. They might even succeed. If Varys got him, Jon would likely have been set up as another puppet for Varys and Illyrio, used to make war on Westeros to weaken it, allowing Young Griff to take the throne. Although, it might actually be better to organise a fake assassination of Jon. If anything could cause a war between Ned and Robert, it would be Ned thinking Robert tried to kill his son.

Let's look at a more likely use for Tyrion's knowledge of dragons that actually has some precedent. At the point of the book, Dany still has little control over her dragons. She rides where Drogon takes her. What's one of Tyrion's earliest actions in the books? He designed a saddle for Bran. He'll probably combine that knowledge with his dragon knowledge (and what additional info on them he finds in Essos) to design and saddle and harness for Dany.

This is a very niche take, but one thing I hate about this theory is the idea that Tywins hatred couldn't possibily be JUST motivated by grief and/or, more pressingly, ableism. As a disabled person who runs in circles w other disabled people, I've met so many people who don't even require care from their parents who still experience disgust or anger from family. Thats not even mentioning the real world death count among disabled people, especially babies and childre, who were killed for being 'burdensome' or 'wrong'. 'All dwarves are bastards in their fathers eyes' was a really poignant quote that I felt personally attatched too in many ways, and seeing people diminish its meaning just kinda sucks.

Sure, I think Tyrion being a dwarf is the icing on the cake so to speak, but it goes much deeper than that. Tyrion and is more like Tywin than anyone in the entire Lannister family. If this was a cliche fantasy story with cool magical "good guys", then this theory wouldn't bother me so much, but this isn't what ASoIaF is, that's not what GRRM writes. Nobody in this story is special. Even Jon with his alluded Targaryen heritage is not special. People wanting their favorite character to tick the box of their favorite character trait doesn't make a good theory, it displays a complete misunderstanding of the text's purpose. And it's not fucking Proust we're talking about here, it's fairly simple to get what George is trying to do. He even says it out loud, "Heart in conflict". The real red herring in the story is all this magic heritage bullshit.

imma be real you actually convinced me of this theory when i didn't believe it at the start of this video.
"I can't prove you are not mine" is the line that convinced me. It means even Tywin has doubts, and theres really no one else but Aerys for him to suspect. Tywin is the most likely person to know if anything actually happened, and theres enough hints for that to be plausible.
If nothing else this suggests to me the ambiguity of Tyrions birth is an intentional element of the character.
I personally don't think blood is required for Tyrion to be Tywin come again. Tyrion became like Tywin because of the influence Tywin had over his life, not because they share some 'machiavelian prick' gene.
The ambiguity does serve a narrative purpose and does add to the story. It makes a point about how Tyrion is a monster because of how he was raised not because of his genes. It adds more layers to Tywins conflicted feelings about Tyrion, and adds meaning to their final interaction where Tywin tries to conclude finally that Tyrion IS NOT his genetic son, while Tyrions response shows that even if that was literally the case, the fact he IS his son is what turned him into this. Tywins NON-genetic son actually being the most like him is also a rejection of everything Tywin thinks about the importance of blood in creating your legacy.
Theres also a couple times you portrays astrisks to this theory like they are damning that I don't think really are. Especially from the angle that it's intentionally meant to be ambiguous. Like, from the perspective that it is meant to be ambiguous, pale blonde hair only being *mostly* exclusive to targ ancestry helps achieve that goal. And of course he never describes the eye as purple, why would he do that, if the intention was to imply something as subtext, what would the writer do?
All dragon riders have targ blood, the only exception was clarified to have still had targ blood. Which they felt the need to clarify because only Targs are meant to be allowed to ride dragons. It's implied there was some blood ritual long ago that lets them ride dragons that no one else has. So another goal of the ambiguity could be to allow that to happen logically, without needing to confirm anything that would undercut earlier stories.

    Fucking love this channel.
Heads and shoulders above anyone else.
The us how you make content.
I think I'd still love glidus even if I didn't spunk my nutts over ASOIAF content.
Seriously gladius, your levels of detail (even just for a gag, you'll only see if you pause quick enough) truly brilliant content, great humour and the best editing on UA-cam.
If I wasn't a poor man with a health condition it's one of the very few channels I would give money too, but I am poor and don't work, so sorry about that.
People with a job, give this man your money

While I don't think Tyrion is a Targaryen, I do like the theory that both Tywin AND Aerys are Tyrion's father. There's a really rare condition, called Chimaerism I believe, which is when 2 different men's sperm fuse together in the womb and form into a child with both fathers and the mother. It usually results in heterochromia, which is 2 different colored eyes but I'm not sure if it just results in blue and brown eyes or if it can be any combination of colors in real life. I don't think Aerys is actually Tyrion's dad over Tywin, but rather that when he screwed Joanna during her tenure as a royal handmaid, his sperm fused with Tywin's already-formed cell baby and changed it into Tyrion. It would explain Tyrion's ability to touch Rhaegal and Visaerion seemingly without any Valyrian blood

  • @sihollett
    @sihollett 3 роки тому +6

The main reason why this theory has any credibility is that people want Tyrion to ride Viserion (which is also a much more credible explanation of all the stuff about the Imp and dragons) and wrongly think that only Targs can ride dragons.

Best Raid shadow legends sponsor ad I've ever seen! Cheesy and prolific as they are, I'm super happy that you got a sponsor, and hope you get many more! I really think you should check out Mista GG too, and approach the same companies that sponsor him. You're both brilliant and hilarious creators with a similar type of audience, and can be imaginative and creative with sponsorship ads.
Also so good to see you back, thank you for another amazing video and theory. Time for my second watch through, slightly slower so I can pause and catch all the text this time ;-) Would love to catch a livestream, DO IT

Mista GG popped into a stream once! Lovely guy. I don't know his work at the time but checked him out afterwards. I can definitely see why you think we're similar in some ways. I'm new to this whole sponsorship thing but at this point (as you can plainly see) I'll take what I can get.

@@Glidus That's awesome! Mista GG is a good guy for sure, from what he shows in his videos for sure. But especially because he often covers certain topics and uses humour that ain't usually sponsorship or ad friendly, the sponsors he has would likely be more open to your humour too. That would be my guess, anyway. Compared to the more 'PC' companies that only want family vloggers anyhow.
Chuffed to get a reply from you, thank you! Hope that this is the first of many sponsors so we can get more videos! The time and effort you put into these really shows, while you also make it look effortless. You deserve way more subs already. Those of us who've found you so far appreciate you! (Good to see you know who Bill Bailey is as well, just caught that reference, one of my favourite comedians!)

I agree with you, but I think this theory could be referenced in-universe. Tyrion hears the rumors about Aerys and Joanna, and buys into them because with how broken his relationship with his family is it makes it feel easier for him. It fuels his interest in Dany because he buys into the fantasy he was a Targaryen all along, and that he's Brynden Rivers 2.0. Only for him to find proof that Aerys wasn't near Joanna around the time he was conceived and he has to live with that. Preferably he learns it right in his heel mode

I'd say it's more likely Jaime and Cersei (or just Cersei, if you consider a highly unlikely but possible scenario) are Aerys' kida. Cersei has the obsession with wild fire. Jaime doesn't take after Tywin much. Tyrion does take after Tywin and his father's lack of approval is what drives him.

I really like the idea that Tywin and Olenna had some shtuff going on behind closed doors, and that the reasons for the Tyrells practically propping up the Lannisters isnt wholey just a case of "Its the best move", because the best move would be to offer to join stannis on the condition that Shareen gets wed to a Tyrell

I think Nettles exist just so Tyrion can ride a dragon AND not be a Targ.
She obviously had knowledge about dragons and it was def more to it than just feeding it. But it's a brilliant way to introduce the ability for Tyrion to be a Dragonrider without being a Targ (and oddly enough, it would make Tyrion the most popular Lannister of all time. Making him THE Lannister Legend, above even Lan The Clever..which would have Tywin turning in his grave lol The ugliest Lannister being the most beloved is just fantastic lol)

Tyrion essentially admits to Jon in AGOT on the way to the wall that the reason he loves dragons is the power they offer, basically so he could kill his father and sister. He used to light fires in the bowels of the Rock and picture Tywin and Cersei's faces in the fires. Honestly, I love the dude, but Tyrion can come off a lot like a school shooter.
