Looks like the RX10 V4 is being discontinued with no replacement. I'm very glad I have one. As a camera for wildlife photography where I can be taking birds in flight one minute and insects the next this is very much the "Leatherman" of the camera world - it is not the best at anything but it is very capable at many things.

I bought the RX10V4 shortly after it was released, it is my grab and go camera to carry in the car. I have many Canon DSLRs and big L glass lens, but the Sony is so easy to carry on quick outings. Don't get me wrong, I do love my big Canon gear but it's heavy and a tripod is needed. The Sony RX10V4 is a life saver and I love it!

Well, Canon who had a similar spec'd camera, the PowerShot GX3, have stopped making that, but it was quite flawed - slow to respond and had no built-in EVF. On a camera with an equivalent FL of 600mm, that's just plain silly. They did have an add-on EVF, but it used the hot shoe, was bulky and fragile and cancelled the camera's weathering features.
As far as I am concerned the same 1" sensor could remain, it's excellent, but there are other features it could improve on, as I mentioned in my own response.

    • @michaelbell75
      @michaelbell75 10 місяців тому

Thats because smartphones are coming with 1 inch sensors now and with the pericope lenses, you can get really close to the same zoom ranges. Bridge cameras are cool but there is very little want for them these days, especially very expensive ones like the RX10 IV. Most people would opt for a used a7III and a nice lens or two for that kind of money. If Sony makes a new RX10, it needs to be cheaper or come fully loaded, and I mean like 4K 120fps shooting 20-30fps continuous with a killer stacked sensor kind of loaded.

    • @simmo303

Topaz denoise works so well on the images from the RX10iv that it has revolutionized the image processing. When you look at the original reviews for this camera, the most common negative was that it was expensive, when you see how it is still so competitive that shows what great value it was and still it is, I have has an RX10iv for over two years, it is a great travel camera and outstanding for macro. The autofocus is fast and accurate, the images are very sharp. To get a “better” camera I went for the OM 1 with 12-100 and 100 to 400 lenses , this is also a great camera with a lot of computational photography features but it cost me four times what I paid for the RX 10iv , I am seriously thinking of buying another RX10iv to keep as new in case they stop making super zooms altogether!

Well, I bought the RX10 IV and didn't expect anything better. However, I'm not a high tech guy; I just happen to like taking photos. None of the cameras I use are state of the art, on the contrary: Sony DCS HX400 V, Sony DCS WX500, Pentax 2000, KP and K-1 II. They all have their moments, and the greatest joy in photography is the object, what and how you see it. With all my cameras, I have taken pictures that made me happy.
Of course, I think that a possible RX10 V or any new generation mirrorless camera would bring new dimensions to shooting and thus more excitement, but I like these current cameras as well. They are familiar and safe, a bit like old friends.

@@mtnews2883 Unfortunately I don’t know. I transfer the images from the camera to the computer via a cable and leave the camera connected to the computer for the time I use to edit the images. The battery charges during that time.
I also don't take a very large number of pictures at the same time and transfer the pictures to the computer in small batches. So I can't say how many pictures you could get with a fully charged battery. Frosty days (- 20˚C) are an exception. If Sony ever does release the RX10 V I will buy two of them. I owned one for a couple of years and found it to be great for bird photography and general outdoor photography as well. I sold it when I moved on to the Canon R6 because of its subject detection. I ended up selling the Sony because I rarely used it but now I wish I had kept it. It would be a great ravel camera. Now I take my OM-1 and 3 lenses in a small bag. With the Sony it would be a much smaller bag. When I sold my RX10IV there wasn’t the noise reduction/upscaling software that there is now. The lens is sharp and the AF is really good as is. I only have a couple of wishes for the mark 5 if it ever happens. Subject detection and a faster memory card slot. For a camera that shoots 24fps of stills the camera took a ridiculously long time to write to the card. I lost numerous shots to that while waiting. I hope it happens but I am super skeptical that it will.

I shoot stills only and across a lot of platforms: Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus and Sony - in this latter case the RX-10IV. I firmly believe it is the finest super-zoom bridge camera in the world, even after nearly 7 years. Apart from the features you have outlined, a particular gem is the Clear Image Zoom feature that uses computational photography algorithm to give really, really clear images as JPG or XFine JPG up to 1200mm.
Would I buy an RX10V? I would if they did the following:
    * Added an extra button on the back for BBF lock as well as the current AE Lock - I can do that with almost all my other cameras and it's a pain trying to remember to go elsewhere on RX10
    * Improved the stabilization (which is still good but time has moved on)
    * Definitely improved the eye and face tracking
    * TBH, I would prefer a fully-articulated screen to protect the LCD when not in use and still be able to use it high or low.

Still a brilliant camera, I never want to travel with a box of lenses or squint at a cellphone screen for a distant shot. If Sony made a V the only thing they could do for me would be to make it lighter but with the same quality, if that was possible, or have the 24-600 part detachable so I could mount some wide angle fast lenses such as the 14mm I use for Astro and maybe even longer zooms for special wildlife shoots.

I'm turning 70 in a couple of months and only just decided to order the RX10 instead of the 180-600mm zoom, after reading many reviews. As I've said before on another one of your videos, I don't think a RX10 mk 5 is ever going to happen. If it's better than the mk iv then it would be too good an all round camera, which may keep people from buying Sony's interchangeable lens cameras, particularly the APS-C level ones. Sony wants you buying into their lens system, lenses are where the real money is. I am inching toward getting a new superzoom but won't be planning on it till next year, so the a slim chance the MKV might come out in the meantime that would be my target. If not, MAYBE Panasonic will upgrade the FZ 2500. But it seems unlikely. If Sony has stopped making 1" sensors they probably supplied them to Panasonic for their FZ series. High quality1 inch sensor superzooms may be a thing of the past. If so, I will have to try to get a mk iv, that camera is capable enough to keep me happy.

I own the RX10 IV and the A7R IV (with Sony 200-600mm) I love them both however; I reach for the RX10 mostly and do run it for video a lot, keeping the A7R IV for stills.
Would love to see RX10 getting new software and bionz chip. Upgrade the 1" sensor with Sony's new offerings in that size (45-50MP) would enhance the ability to crop immensely especially for a novice who doesn't always nail the composition. Would love to see 60 or 120fps in video just so I could get some better clearer slow-mos
I would buy it for those upgrades... However the RX10 is a giant killer and great for students and smaller folks (who can't lug big glass around) to get outstanding photos using proper techniques!

Suspect a Rx10V might replace a lot of APSC and lens sales. I almost purchased a wonderful used Rx10iv, had in hand, but it just was so large, albeit much smaller than if I had a smaller camera and all the equivalent lenses. I do kind of regret not buying it but it would be so big in my pack if I didn’t need a big telephoto that day. Maybe if the price fell to about $1,000? I think it’s clear that Sony will not release another RX 10 again
My feeling is that they are X 100 and RX 10 will be discontinued at some point
I don’t think there has been enough improvements or development in the one inch sensor
With the better cameras, in cell phones and computational use on pictures and videos Quality differences it’s not that much anymore
Sony has been using the development power to improve on cell phone sensors not the one in sensor
Cameras, nowadays are way behind in processing compared with cell phones
Yes, there has been more megapixels put to full frame sensors and now with Sony coming out with a new global sensor but computational processing power has not been in line with what the cell phones have been doing
Cell phones are doing better tracking in many cases and blurring background, etc. something that cameras don’t have
I have the RX 10 mark four and yes it’s a fabulous camera and fantastic and was ahead of its time
But it’s been too long and no rumors nothing so I got feelings says nope it’s the end of story

Your video made me think, sales bumph always talks about a 1 inch sensor but when you said larger aps c sensor that didn't make sense so I looked and discovered the sensor is way smaller than I thought, seems you need to look carefully at specs not just assume a 1 inch form factor is what you might think. Good as it is the 600 isn't really long enough for distant birds so sadly lugging heavy lenses is going to be continuing, sadly laws of physics and optics can't be changed no matter how much we might like a 1200 equivalent with a full frame sensor.

Video! Would you recommend a good camera with which to take good shots / videos when travelling (even Safari but also landscapes and street views/people etc)? I was undecided between the Sony A6700 with Sony 75/350 lens (or TAMRON 18/300) or the Sony RX 10 iv which has the already built-in 20-600 mm zoom. Do you know it/them?
I had also seen the Full Frame cameras (which of course the image quality are top) like the A7C and the Alpha3... but for the lenses they are really huge and very heavy. So I think I’m worth an APSC or that bridge ..
What do you think? Thank you!

Hi there and thanks for the comment. The Sony RX10IV is great if you don't want to carry additional lenses if you want something all in one HOWEVER its sensor is not as large as the other cameras you mentioned so its a little unfair to compare them as the larger sensor cameras will always have an advantage with dynamic range, low light, better ISO performance etc. Having said that I do have the 75/350 lens and its a great lens on an APSC camera but its not that wide. So with the RX10iv you have 24mm wide angle built in. If you want a wide shot with the 75-350 you would have to change out your lens on the spot. The Tamron 18-300 good choice too but of course its not as long as the 600 and not as wide either so its all a compromise...If you are looking for the best image quality and that is paramount, then you go with a APSC setup. If you are willing to compromise a little bit for the convenience of an all in one, then the RX10 is your best bet in my opinion.!

I think if it was going to happen, it would have done by now. The trouble is what it really needs is a midway update - a Mk4.5 - where they fix user issues like the subpar touchscreen and the battery life. But that should have come out 18/24 months after launch. Now the big changes needed to make it worthwhile would be too big to warrant the price hike. The market's going mirrorless; high-functioning bridge cameras aren't marketable right now because lower spec mirrorless and even second hand DSLRs are too good and too readily available.

It's about half the weight, with a comparable optical zoom range (26.8mm - 536mm). The aperture at tele is decent too (f2.0 - 3.8). The neat feature of the camcorder is that the lense does not extend out when zooming. Keeping the overall size compact during use.

I bought a used one because there are some really good deals on used ones. If you buy a used one, make sure you get one from a seller with 100% feedback if you buy on Ebay with plenty of pictures and confirm that it works and that there are no issues with the lens or screen. As far as the Mark 3 over the 4, there has been some autofocus improvements with the Mark 4 which is more important in video than photos. If you are going to use the camera mainly for photos, then you could probably get away with the Mark 3, but if you are going to be shooting a fair amount of video as well I'd get the Mark 4.

Yeah, tough call there. My go-to camera for just about everything has been the Lumix G9, as for me, MFT is where all the lines intersect--it provides the best combination of portability and performance in existence (especially if you use a wide EFL range, like the 12-800mm I have). That said, there are times when a bridge camera makes just more sense (like dog walking or travelling in certain places). That's why I also have an FZ1000 (which produces excellent images in most conditions and has a flippy screen, plus way better ergo than the RX), but it's not weatherproof and I often want more than 400mm EFL, so I'm thinking about an RX10 iv. I find it odd not only that Sony's yet to replace, nor discount this now six-year-old camera (although the intro price of US$1,700 would be over $2,100 today with inflation), but as there's no indication that a replacement is imminent, this is a powerful camera and more than sufficient for most (but not all) applications, so it's still a compelling choice.

If the MAIN reason you are going to use the camera is bird photography and you will have the camera mounted on a tripod, then I would say the P1000. If you plan on hand-holding then the P950 because its really difficult to get a steady shot at 3000mm without a tripod and the P950 is a lot lighter. The Nikon's clearly have the best zoom so if bird photography is your primary reason, then I would choose the NIkons!

The RX10IV is better if you are more into photography because it is a still camera first, and video camera second. The AX700 is better if you like the form factor of a camcorder and I would say it performs better in video.. Better stabilization, more manual controls (although the zoom isn't as long). I would have loved to have bought it for video but fear it would suffer the same moire problems. Some say it doesn't as it's an over sampled image in video but I can't see any Sony documents saying that and the videos I can see taken with it often look the same over sharpen moire in leaves and buildings footage. So what would I like from a Sony RX10 V. No moire video, much higher bit rate video, 100mb is not good enough. 10 bit 4.2 2 and 60fps NO crop. Anything else would be a bonus.

I used Nikon for years but Fujifilm for travel and would have no hesitation in picking up a RX series camera based on Sony’s technology leadership. The travel camera market has a giant hole in it that smartphones do not fill to the extent that a Sony RX could. Given all the hype around Lyca compact cameras like the Q3, Sony could have positioned the RX1 in that market segment. The RX family of cameras is sorely missed.

  • @davep2945
    @davep2945 8 місяців тому

There is a market for high quality super zooms but camera manufacturers that produce higher end cameras like Sony probably think they are shooting themselves in the foot to build them. Add a bigger battery, buffer and faster file transfers, upgrade the auto focus to A6700 standards and keep the focal length while making the user interface more intuitive and Sony wouldn't be able to make enough of them. But that would take away sales from the alpha line....maybe. I've seen a lot of folks talking about upgrading the sensor to APS-C size but that comes with a huge penalty in the for of lens size and weight. With current technology the lens would end up being almost double the size it is now to have the same focal range with an APS-C sensor versus the 1" sensor. Sony could split the difference by going with a micro four thirds sensor and keep the size manageable but then how would they make a case for a single use sensor as they would no longer be able to use it in the RX-V's and keep the pocket size or else decrease the reach of the mark 7. Sony has probably left the RX IV as it is because technology doesn't currently allow for it to be better without compromising some things that make it appealing. Not to mention being able to field other cameras with the same sensor. Add that to the potential to cut into their alpha series sales and it's doubtful Sony will update the RX IV unless they think doing so would generate more revenue than they believe they would lose from lost alpha sales. Now, if Sony could revolutionize the 1" sensor to rival APS-C levels of low light capability and dynamic range then they might update it knowing that the self professed pro crowd or those that like to pretend will scoff at a 1" sensor. Then the general public might buy the RX-V and the less informed or those in actual need of something higher end will still buy the alpha series. A win-win for Sony.

Hello cellphones have been upgraded but there's only so much you can do with physics and a tiny lens . The zooms are still heavily digitally assisted and the RX10 offers a true 600mm zoom, coupled with a large piece of Zeiss glass ...no cell phone can come close in zoom quality to this. Sure they both can take great snapshots at wide angle, and you may not be able to tell them apart in those instances, but there is still demand for bridge cameras because of their zoom capabilities for wildlife and birding.

Lately i have been thinking about buying a phone with good camera and zoom ability and i knew about the sony's bridge too, but when i watch the footages i cant really make decision to go for a cheaper phone + sony or to pay extra on phone to have both in one device. In this case, for example 5 years ago it was much more clear for someone like me that it worth to buy phone and camera separately.

I believe they are simply focusing now on their more profitable divisions like mirrorless, lenses the vlogging market etc. but if consumer sentiment shifts and they hear enough of a call from the market for an all in one camera, they could always modify their strategy.

I will wait for the V version....

My main reason that I am waiting on the RX10 V is the micro usb. I would have bought the IV long ago, if it had a USB-C. C'mon Sony. Help.

I think bridge cameras are done really and it's a shame Just like compact cameras, they are a thing of the past. Last one was the FZ1000 Mark II like 5 years ago. Not only do they not sell very well, these companies are trying to protect their cinema lines and/or mirrorless lines. The RX10 IV is also overpriced for what it is. $1,700 for a 1 inch sensor camera with lower end specs is just very poor value. You can get a used FF camera and a great lens or two for that money.

I think Sony has stopped making the RX10 serie because it is simply to good comparing to the full frame cameras.

Sony are stupid if they don’t make a mk5, will make them a ton of money

A camera is different from other devices like TVs. Lets say you buy a new TY now or wait two years. What does it matter after five years? Nothing. With a camera it is different. Even after 5 years you miss the photos or have them in poorer quality as you had a worse camera.
I doubt there will be any new fixed lens cameras. Soon they may even end production. Canon has canceled its comparable camera G3 X.

Uhhhh…. I own an Rx10IV and it does not do well in low light… It is a fabulous walk around camera but when the sun goes down you are done… forget it…

There are ways to make your pictures look better in low light such as limiting your ISO.

people don't buy anymore consumer cameras . they have cell phones . the biggest problem with cameras are the interface that didn't changed much from the early days of digital cameras and the transfer of the photos to the phone . the apps are horrible and don't come near the easy of using the built in camera in the cell phone.

many are using cellphones over dead weighted cameras.
sony closed the dsc-rx10 series because the photography has been dead for decades.

For bird photography a cellphone is not a lot of use. When photographing birds there is no substitute for focal length and its almost impossible to have too much.
