Put PPF on my 2010 A4...replaced it 5 years later with Xpel (due to discoloration; old technology)...still have the car. Zero chips after 120K miles. Worth it.
PPF definitely worth it. A good friend of mine bought a brand new black M140i a few years back and refused PPF, despite my recommendation. After just a few thousand miles it looked terrible, but I did at least feel incredibly smug afterwards :)
Hey I love your channel & have been subscribed for a long time.Just wanted to say, Beemer was it's own car company, BMW's are BIMMERS :-) Much love from OHIO :-)
Great vid Nick ..... the PPF product is worth the expense for day to day wear and tear but to see the result of the bolt striking your 911, it speaks volumes. Thanks for the content mate 👍
Put a bit of PPF myself on the rear ledge of a SUV for a leased car that was pre cut as these cars with the painted rear bumper when dragging something out of the trunk you can scratch them or chip them with a suitcase or in nicks case a toaster. Only hard part was getting the ratios right for the sprays. It looks fine but you can tell a pro didn't do it as you see a few specs of dust.
My wife had to have a black car and insists on being able to go through the car wash that has the big, swirling columns that spin around against the car. On top of that, it's a Porsche, which is known in the industry for having some of the softest paint (water-based, due to environmental concerns). So, if I don't want swirl marks showing up on our black car then I had no choice but to drop the cash on a full wrap. I took it straight to wrap the day after I bought it...and one of my other cars is getting wrapped and coated right now. Not cheap, but worth it I guess.
Hate to tell you but the automatic car wash will eventually ware off the self healing top coat of the film. Automatic car washes are basically like rubbing your car down with sand paper.
Put "full" PPF on my CS. Sadly, I made a bad choice when I picked out the installer. Definitely would PPF again, just with other installers. Almost 1 year on the car now, with speeds up to 180mph, some driving during the winter and despite running on Cup 2 (every stone in their path stick to them and end up being thrown into the rocker panels, wheel arches, etc), no stone chips or paint damage yet. Also, have 2 layers of ceramic coating on top of the PPF and on the wheels. Everything cost me a lot in the end, but painting the carbon fiber bonnet is anything but cheap too.
Best to find the best PPF installers. My uncles GTR had PPF installed by the previous owner and on the bonnet there's water spots on it which I believe is underneath the film
Did this on my 16’ 4runner, boy was i glad i did, the amount of little stones that come from sand (i’m from canada, and they sand/salt the road alot during winter) 90k km in and no stone chips.
Dealer installed PPF didn't pan out well. Had bubbles and wasn't cut properly, paid a third party to strip old PPF and redo a full wrap with full ceramic coating plus wheels. Well they did a decent job but my badges fell off last week...man it's hard to find a good PPF installer. Nick any suggestions for the next car in NY?
After it is applied! How do you maintain it? Can you use a clay bar on clear protected coatings? Can you buff it? Sure it gets contamination on it from weather. Thank you great video.
Hey! once its protected with PPF you can wash and wax or ceramic coat as you feel like. You can also clay bar the film as well, should you get any minor scratches in the film from the clay bar, you should be able to take the scratches out with a heat gun. I don't recommend buffing the film though. Hope this helps!
My son just put this on his BMW 4 series. It's almost a must have since BMW paint protection will not cover rock chips. He paid $1900 for the bumper & hood.
i had my whole 981S wrapped with xpel, very satisfied. You mentioned UV, but dont think its protest against UV, reason is not to create different colour shifts on areas not covered
I did both and never regretted it on my 991.2. Protection and easy to maintain. Just watch out that you use an appropriate bug and tar remover on the PPF or it will melt (personal experience here).
Thanks for your very informative videos, Nick. They sure helped me in making choices and decisions regarding my new Porsche 911 S manual which is being wrapped at Darien as I write.
I'm sold on the product and on Darien Detail as the preferred shop for getting it applied. I plan to get the customized full frontal PPF package on my new 2020 Macan S as soon as possible after delivery. Thank You Nick for your excellent review.
It's too late for my 11 year old Mk5 Golf Gti, the rocks have and stones have ruined the bonnet, front end and Xenon lights. It has only 71,000 kilometers in the clock and I still love it to drive. Do you know specialist wrappers in Australia or New Zealand. I might get a new Gti one day.
One big advantage of having a UA-cam channel is getting PPF in exchange for filming an install. On average (local labor rates will make this go up or down) Hood, Front Bumper and Mirrors for a Macan is like $2k, throw in another $500 for the door and hatch bits. Porsche has notoriously soft paint, which scratches and absorbs dirt that isn't washed off, so PPF is a must. A lot of new cars have paint that is so thin it chips off if you breath on it. It's a cost-benefit analysis. You can try a DIY install for like $160, but good luck on complex curves.
Good video. Now I understand the work involved and why it costs so much. Definitely worth it. I worry about sun damage to my gel coat. This will prevent it. Thanks for sharing. Appreciate the classical music (Flight of the Bumblebee) in the footage. Nice change from the ghastly Millennial noise they call music.
Nick, my understanding is that film on headlights voids the warranty on the lamps because it interferes with heat dissipation. Might be worth checking on that with your dealership.
@@NickMurray Interesting, just got this reply back from my Porsche dealer in Canada about PPF on the headlights. "We don’t do headlights… immediate warranty VOID on that component and it’s almost guaranteed to make the headlights crack."

After watching this video, perhaps that’s not the way to go….and instead I should scrap ceramic coating the car and just spring for a whole car PPF? Advice much appreciated! Hello Nick. I am going to do the front package and rear flares on my new C4 coming in a week or so. If the wrap pieces yellow after time, how easy is it to get it replaced? And how long are they warranting your job you just got done?
hey nick, is it a problem to get dings fixed with the paint protection especially if the ding is in an area that requires a glue pull technique, where they glue a plug on the outside of the body and yank it out?

Nick, had the front of my Porsche Macan 2019 covered with a PPF, the installer stated that Porsche does not recommend covering the headlights since the lens will delaminate when removing it and then you have to replace the entire light.
