I'm not sure I could even afford the electricity to keep my oven on for 10hrs. 😭
This is ridiculous…how much does it cost in electricity….
The average cost in the US to run your gas oven for ten hours is $1.14 according to a quick Google search. If anything, the oranges are what is expensive in this project. An electric oven averages .36 an hour.

The are other methods to dry citrus slices: in summertime you can put the slices on a rack and put them in your car for a day or two depending on your outside temperature. On a really hot day they will be done 7-10 hours and your car will smell good. Blot them with a napkin and that will speed up the drying time. If your house has the old radiator heater you can set the racks on that. I have also put the racks of citrus slices under my row cover that goes over my plants in the winter in the summer: you can set a simple plastic tent up in the summer and put them under that. I learned how to do this when I lived out in the middle of nowhere without electricity. I have so many bags of dried citrus, apple and pear slices from years of doing decorations, potpourri and food preservation. I am always looking for ideas to use them. If you have or no someone that has any of these types of fruits ask if you can have them. I am fortunate that I have apple and pear trees and I would be happy to give some away rather than have to clean the ground up what in the fall because they leave a mess.
I know your comment was a year ago, however I think we will have inflation for a very long time with our current debt rate getting worse. I wanted to put this out there because they really are nice to decorate with and give as gifts. My best friend since 1976 ask me to make her a swag, the one in the video is very basic. I strung cinnamon sticks with a citrus slices in between each cinnamon stick and h.glued a bay leaf on the cinnamon stick 🍃🍊 🍃 (one bay leaf on each side of the citrus slice ) and a star anise in the center. I don’t like using jute to string with because it freys, but it does make cute little simple bows to add in. I like using green gardening wire because it’s sturdy and cheap. Fishing line and thick thread works good too.
Take care and Happy New Years!
ok so dont? no one cares abt ur lack of affordability
@@moonchild1432bro really gotta be rude for no reason😭
Maybe after very hot oven been used and OFF then put oranges in oven on rack and leave until oven completely cold, without opening.
This works when I dry tomatoes.
If orange rolled in orris powder and in a dry, warm place can last for years. As it dries, it shrinks and becomes hard as stone but the smell remains, fainter but sweet.
This is for whole oranges, studded with cloves. I do apologise.
As soon as I heard 10 hours... my head whipped around to the vacant audience behind me and said 10 hours bissh no one's got 10 hours
no ones asking u to watch it for 10 hrs. like why are ppl on the internet so dense
Oh wow they look amazing but I think I will have to avoid this as it takes much longer than I was expecting and that's an awful lot of energy. Would probably be perfect for someone with a range that is already on all day.
Drying oranges is the main reason I bought a dehydrator. I set it and forget it.
I think it takes 10 hours because theirs no place for the moist to go maybe put some dry rice in the fridge and put them into the oven every half hour to absorb moisture. Also don't put oranges on a wood plank
Can you do this with an airfryer?
Had to run to comments 🏃♀️ adtervshe said 10 hours in the oven
So bake at lowest setting for 10 hours and flip every hour or half hour
10hrs???? I thought it was 4hrs!!!! I need to run errands 🥴
Did she say 10 hours?
Yes, low and slow helps the oranges keep their color when dried. It’s not a quick process. The higher the temperature the more brown they are when dried.
every hour for 10 hours!? *crying*
@@PepperHarrow LOLZ I understand , it just threw me off at first when i heard you say it . I was gurl ..... 10 hours? neck nah lolz but i ended up following your guide anyways turned out perfect - i just pressed the juice out first cut my time down.
do you blot the oranges to get rid of some of the juice before you put them in the oven?
I usually don’t, but you certainly can.
Three CENTIMETERS? Maybe you mean millimeters? Although that would be reeeeaaallly thin...
I tried this, 10 hours is much too long. I followed instructions but honestly mine burnt even though I was flipping them often. I will try again but at a shorter time period.
Totally! You gotta do what works for you. Not sure why, but my oven takes longer. It’s a gas oven, so not sure if that makes a difference or not n
I tried this too and burnt 2 whole bags of oranges. Googled around & found no one else says 10 hours. More like 4 lol
Haha I think many will go broke with energy bills or they can pay by dried orange peel. Lol
10 hours????
3 centimeters? That's over an inch thick. Are you sure that's what you meant? I have some in my dehydrator right now and I sliced them a bit more than 1/4 inch thick.
Jenn misspoke. 1/4 inch is perfect
What temp do i do in dehyrator ? Do we flip them in dehyrator as well
Thank you for the demonstration! I want to make some of these with my Granddaughters so I can hang them in my rustic Christmas tree.
Yeah I don't think 3cm is what she meant. A simple close up of the cutting or the slices before dehydrating would have been helpful. They look very pretty though!
@@PepperHarrow can you do it with a air fryer
👍
Will these also smell good in homemade potpourri? Do I need to dry all the way for potpourri that's going on the stove? Thank you!
I take it they're measured in Fahrenheit?
Do you mean 170 degrees Fahrenheit or Celcius?
3cm?
What about natural sun dried?
Great idea for an experiment. We usually do this in winter so sun drying wouldn't be conducive but trying it in the greenhouse might be a good idea.
Mine turned dark drown after 2 days. Its odd
10 hours! Who can afford the electricity?
