I was OBSESSED with D1. It was almost a lifestyle haha. I remember my favourite memories were gearing up for nightfall with your elemental gear, or spawning into the tower with 7 other players simultaneously when IB started. IB was chaos, thousands of PvE players on just for the power drops. It was a free for all. Running the lamps solo invisible on Crotas end after being useless in VoG as a Hunter main.
I had to work in Qatar for 2 weeks and I remember calling my girlfriend and asking her to turn on my PS and directing her to xur just so I didn’t miss the gear. It was some of my most carefree years of my life and now, over 30 and married and with a baby… I wouldn’t change a thing from back then. I will never forget what D1 was.

Nothing can compare to the first 3 months of Destiny 1. The first exotics dropping, everyone trying them out and talking about them. My first was Mida multi-tool and it was garbage and then TTK comes around and it becomes my beloved. Reverse with Pocket Infinity, busted in PvP, felt great then TTK comes around and they break it. No one can forget their first raid experiences. VoG, first of its kind and then TTK just a top tier VoG.

I still remember looking at G-horn Week 2 in Xur's inventory and thinking that I didn't want to "waste" my exotic slot in my loadout on a heavy weapon, and also I thought Wolfpack rounds sounded gimmicky AND there was no indication anywhere that G-horn had tracking as a hidden perk. I bought Truth Week 6 because the aggressive tracking sounded cool to me plus the 3 shell magazine. I spent the next 5 months hitting up every exotic drop chance in both raids on all 3 characters every week until G-horn finally dropped off the Deathsinger. I was actually mad when it finally dropped because I had learned to live without it and didn't like the mentality that it was "required" to get into an lfg group for the Crota's End raid.

I remember Sunsingers being a requirement in some Crota's End comps because of the bridge cheese.
For those who never got to experience this cheese:
Once you had a part of the bridge built you would send a hunter with triple jump and the sword across the gap and kill the ogres on the other side. Once the ogres were down and the pylons on the other side were charged everyone including the hunter would jump into the pit killing themselves, but if you had a sunsinger warlock with supercharge if they self-rezzed at just the right moment right before the game would kick you to a menu the bridge would be built and the warlock would run around rezzing everyone allowing you to proceed to Deathsinger.
You would do this method because it was way quicker than doing the encounter how it was designed. It was also one of the only ways I found groups despite not having the Ballerhorn because I would play Sunsinger.

Also if youre a crucible player you should check out 1v1s and 1v3s amd sweaty trials matches. They really encapsulate the energy d1 crucible had which was so different from d2. It felt so much more raw and had more energy, the weapon, map, and armor designs. The whole aesthetic in general was much more original and authentic and the color use and lighting was just in general much more well designed and implimented, even with the lower resolution and frame rate. I think those last two things actually added to the purely visual aesthetic, enhancing its innate lofi aesthetic from the more matte dark orange/green/blue color palette contrasted with bright, vibrant, colorful neon lighting in a really dramatic style that really made use of shadows much more effectively and dramatically. Theyd move away from that aesthetic in new content they added in rise of iron but a huge part of the game still had it in spades. I think comparing the classic shaders from d1 like glowhoo and stuff with the more clean, refined, meticulously painted shaders from d2 perfectly encapsulates the subtly dramatic shift in overall aesthetic, excuse the oxymoron. Like you barely notice it at first, but the more you think about it the more you realize it completely changes the atmosphere of the game and bleeds into how they changed subtle things about their entire approach to mechanic balancing and map/level design for a more streamlined, clean cut, carefully crafted and curated experience, with less of an emphasis on atmosphere and more of an emphasis on the more tangible content. Similar to how they ditched their more distinct lofi style with unique color use and dramatic lighting techniques in (my personal opinion) a misguided attempt to shift the focus entirely on the much more intricate, detailed, much higher resolution character models that they were capable of creating with the next gen modeling software they used to make d2 with. It seems like their new approach viewed their original heavily stylized lofi sci fi aesthetic as fat to trim to make the game more concise and less polarizing in all areas. Which i suppose i hear the pitch for, but i think they just cut way too much of the original personality destiny had away that they dont even come close to recapturing with the much more mechanically and sculpturally intricate achievements they were able to accomplish with more advanced software.

My theory is it’s because there isn’t the same grind from D1 where you pretty much always had something to do or grind for. It’s all streamlined and much easier. Plus it made the big expansions feel so much more impactful and inspired me to grind again. On D2 if i take a two month break i've missed out on a season pretty much, ingame story, random limited time modes, etc. It feels so forced in Destiny 2 that the story just doesn't hit the same at all. Part of the charm of D1 was its simplicity. The droughts were great because you could grind the game then take a break and still feel like when a new expansion is coming out you arent playing catch up. D2 is so painful to play because if you arent consistently playing it even a two month break means youre playing catch up. Plus with how leveling works in D2 now you cant take a break and comeback and play trials or endgame content because the other players are scaled higher and its overall just a frustrating experience. D2 genuinely is a decent game, but its not destiny anymore, it is a mere shell of what it once was. Exotics are so constant they feel dull and there isn't any hype to getting them. The crucible is unfixable because you cant balance 4 subclasses on each class, hundreds of weapons where even some blues are better than exotics at times, so many different abilities that it feels like overwatch half the time etc. The raids are still good and fun but honestly the one that really set the best atmosphere and felt like a D1 raid was the very first one on the world eater ship. The other ones have felt kind of bleak and like copies of D1 raids with their style. I dont have a problem or hatred for D2 but in my opinion they went overboard with it, the simplicity of destiny 1 and how unique it felt is what made it special. Not the exotics, not the over abundance of content. But the good content that took time and the love for the game and community. All which feel very distant in D2. (plus season passes are a fkn scam and a joke, dont even get me started on those)

The destiny 1 leveling system felt so rewarding and the amount of time and work put into it made all the drops so exciting. I’ve never felt the same way about d2

@@ExtraordinaryFate you are right, they have been doing better in that regard. But there are still many things Destiny 1 did better than Destiny 2 that could be implemented into the game.
