  • I've been asked to make a video ranking state capitol buildings for awhile now. State Capitol buildings are some of the country’s most interesting structures because they serve as a physical representation of their respective state's unique spirit and heritage. In this video I rank the nations top ten state capitol buildings, primarily based off of their exterior appearance but I also factor in their geographic context. Thanks for watching the video: Top 10 State Capitols Ranking

Liked these capitol buildings. I think the reason why they are appealing, style aside, is that they are horizontally designed, yet central domes neutralizes it with vertical elements.

Nice video: Maryland's state Capitol in Annapolis has been in continuous use longer than any other in the Nation. Annapolis also once served as the Capital of the US. The Treaty of Paris was signed here (ending the Revo. War) and George Washington resigned his commison here.

It's cute, nit grand. On the other hand, the Vermont Capitol manages to be cute and stately at the same time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a list that didn’t have CT as #1, and for good reason

Wow! Honestly until this video I thought all the state capitols were generally the same Greek and Romanesque style of pillars, arches, etc…. But who knew there is such a large variety of architectural styles and colors! Thanks for the video! That was awesome!!!!

Well, you're clearly a dome fan, lol. Notwithstanding, I'm glad you included New York's (domeless) Capitol. It's a beautiful and unique building that occupies a prime spot.

I'm glad you have Nebraska in your top-10! If you include the interior, it might be much higher on the list. Btw do we agree on Florida as # 50 and Alaska # 49?

    • @CityGeek
      @CityGeek  2 місяці тому +2

Yeah I stuck to exterior but ranking them by interior would be interesting as well! Lol I have Alaska as #50 but I'm not a fan of Florida's capitol building either.

I got introduced to the West Virginia and the Illinois one while on the train. These Capitol buildings stick out so much you can't look away! The West Virginia one was gorgeous with its gold color, and I'll admit the Illinois one freaked me out a bit because I wasn't expecting a huge glowing building lighting up the night sky. I eventually decided to visit Springfield, IL, and it is a great place to soak up a lot of history, plus you get to go inside the older Capitol building!
Great video! All these buildings are amazing!

I’d say that was a pretty good list! Whenever I have time in a capital city I try and take a guided tour of the Capitol building…most recently did Colorado, overall I’ve been in 3/10th of your list (MN, TX, and IA…for as many times as I’ve been to Madison I’ve never been in the Capitol but usually stayed by it), and plan to hit UT this fall!

I have toured a few of these. Texas , Nebraska and Utah. The Utah capital building has a siesmic fault running in front of it. So it was retrofitted with dampers underneath it to isolate it from shocks.. The tour lets you see them

Tho I do agree with most of your list, my absolute favorite state capitol building is Oregon. No I don't live there nor have I ever been to Oregon but the clean lines of that building are something to behold in my opinion.

I was just in the state capitol buildings of Texas and Louisiana for a spring break road trip! Both were beautiful buildings, and it would be really hard to rank them. But it was so cool to see the interior and exterior up close.

Very good list. Connecticut incorporated more neo-gothic elements, and New York had very neo-renaissance looks. The mansard roof gave them a more French château look. Minnesota and Texas have very stunning and massive Neoclassical state capitals too.

  • @KevinPriceLive

Interesting list. Clearly you have a preference for Gothic design. I was surprised that Colorado's wasn't (at least) an honorable mention.

Hi City Geek….This was a nice addition to your channel! Fun trivia fact…our state Capitol here in Austin was built using native pink granite from the Llano uplift region just west of Austin. I wonder if any other states used stone within their own border.

I subscribe and enjoy the channel. Not a fan of several on this list. I do appreciate the very quick qualifier on height as Louisiana's capitol is tallest, but you noted on your top ten list when discussing Nebraska. Obviously these are opinions so none are wrong or right, but New York is just blah...maybe the tower would have helped. It looks like any run of the mill British Department store to me. I would also rank Texas' much higher, and would have put Rhode Island in the top ten instead of New York. But good on you for putting your views out there. Having just done some business in the Wisconsin capitol, I will note it has some great historical rooms inside also and a great setting next to the Frank Lloyd Wright convention centre.

If you were not counting the state itself or the city proper, then Missouri definitely should’ve been on this list (at least in honorables) nothing too crazy about the building but it is a beautiful white marble structure. The setting is amazing though, perched atop the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River… absolutely amazing setting. Did you forget to look around Jeff City? :P

Great presentation! However, most of these (and in general) state capitals mimic the federal capital building in Washington, D.C. The Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Tennesse have Greek temples. My home state has a modified temple with a simple rotunda. Original plans included a park stretching west to the river. "Economic and political" concerned derailed tgat project. Also, our state capital building employs a capital order unique in the 50 states. I've read where we have the only one.
I'll let you do the research for the answer. 🤔😉

Iowa's Capitol the Palace of the Princess! I love it!
During the Great Depression, there was a man hoboing around the country, and having his picture taken in front of Capitol buildings while standing on his head. This man observed when he was in Des Moines he thought the Iowa Capitol building was the ugliest in the country. There was an outrage of Iowa pride over this. Calm was restored when there was an editorial in the Des Moines Register acknowledging no one has to love anything about us, and it was attributing far too much authority to a goofball standing on his head in front of Capitol buildings!

California's isn't ostentatious, just a nice classical styled building. Being it's in flat Sacramento it couldn't have a commanding location, but the park around it is nice.

I Was Actually Born In The Wisconsin State Capitol Madison. When I Used To Live There We Would Always Go Downtown And Even Go On Top Of The Capitol. I Was Sad When We Had To Move But Now I Live Near A City That Has No Capitol But A Better Downtown Even Without A Capitol Because Most Of The Towers Are Taller Than The Wisconsin State Capitol And It Lies Right On A Big Lake

MN capitol building is great but I think its location detracts from it due it being so close to the cathedral. The cathedral is higher, taller, and larger, than the capitol building, and is the most iconic building in Saint Paul. It leaves the capitol sitting in its shadow.

You said inder "Nebraska" that it has "one of the most unique Capitol buildings ...)." But there is no such thing as "most unique", let alone "one of the most unique". Something is unique or it is not unique; there cannot therefore be a "more unique" or "most unique". You meant something like "unusual" or "striking".
This is a mistake I increasingly encounter, so you are not alone in making it.
    Good choice of capitols, though.
