  • Buy one and trash it,then throw it away. Some folks do just that and that’s their prerogative. I just fix them if they’re fixable and warn them to not sew on heavy stuff because it will break. Not the worst machine you’ll ever buy, but in my humble opinion, NOT HEAVY DUTY. YMMV .

    I was gifted this machine (4423) a couple of years ago I wished he hadn't. I own four other older Singers from the seventies and I know "4423 Heavy Duty" is a fantasy and not reality. My Futura II and my Creative Touch 1030 Singers are much more hearty than the gray beauty. If I had to get rid of one the 4423 would be the first to go. But having said that I've learned a few things and it is usable if you're a responsible sewer, keep it clean and don't force ANYTHING. Thanks for a great video.

    I was cleaning my own 4423 and after watching this video, I took a good look at the plate and it was stove in, just like the one in the video! Before you ask, the heaviest thing I sewed on this machine was WOOL. My biggest problem is the variety of screws used, and the fact that, unlike every single instruction parts manual, it does not have actual pictures of the screws (and genius me didn't make note of what screws went where.) Glad I did this with this one and not one of my old heavy-body machines (have you noticed how many people here have like six machines, LOL?) Thank you for this great video!!

      Use the trial and error method of determining which screw goes where.
      Wool can be loosely woven, or tightly woven.
      The thread count determines the difficulty.
      The tighter the weave, the harder it is to sew.

    Just got a 4452 and after an 8 inch straight stitch, the stitch selector dial would freeze up in either direction I would try to turn it....the feed dog would be in the upright position and would not advance the material intermittently , therefore birdnesting thread. The stitch length dial would not reflect the actual length and forget button holing! I m looking to dump singer and their chinese made garbage and get something that will button hole, overlock and do denim jeans in one machine...do you have any suggestions? I have a singer 15-1 and an industrial 111w155 that work fine but this heavy duty " stinger" is all bull crap

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  Рік тому +1

      Every machine has its limits, and denim jeans is usually it. I would prefer a machine with metal for its integral parts, as well as precision machining and manufacturing processes.
      The only one that checks those boxes would be the Kenmore 158 series.
      I’ve made several videos with reviews on them.
      That would be my recommendation.

    Can you tell me what you charge to service a machine like this. or an industrial machine

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  2 роки тому

      To service this machine the charge was $69.50 plus tax = $75.25. The machine was dropped off at one of my 7 drop off locations in North Texas. If I service this machine on location in my service area, the price varies from $89.50 to $149.50, depending on the distance traveled.
      For a basic, lock stitch industrial ( long arm) or walking foot upholstery machine, they are all serviced on location. The price for service is $109.50 to $199.50 depending on the distance traveled. If you’re in my service area, give me a call.

      Make sure it’s not in the buttonhole mode.
      Make sure your stitch length is set at its longest setting.
      Bump the reverse button in and out to release it.
      That’s about all I can suggest.

    Mine has started hitting that bobbin case , how do I set it right

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  Місяць тому

      If the bobbin case spins out, the needle will strike it.
      I have a video addressing that issue.
      If you’re saying that with the bobbin case removed, the needle hits your hook assembly, that’s either a timing issue or your needle isn’t inserted all the way up to the stop point or it’s bent.

  • @RustyBobbins

    I'd love a video of you reconditioning a bad plate and hook.
    And I do wish people would just buy a vintage industrial. So many older industrials end up in land fills.

    • @RustyBobbins

      @@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Not a specific model but seeing a video on any plate with suggestions of what products are best and see how a drop in one is done and what you use would be helpful. I have a needle file and just got some emery tape, slowly building up my supplies. I’ll have to grab some crocus cloth, I had been using very fine sand paper or nail files on the plastic bobbin cases. The metal cases I’ve been using a rubber honing stick for the insides when I find rust. That’s been working well. I’d just like to see how you manage it, I’m guessing a small bench vise would help to hold the plates ect. While I work on them. I have a tiny room I work out of so have to pick and choose tools according to what I can fit in it.

    I've been searching for hours on how to fully replace the bobbin winder on one of these. I moved apartments, took out my machine, and the winder was completely loose. I opened the case, and it fell out in a ton of plastic pieces, totally smashed. I cannot for the life of me find instruction on replacing it. The attached part isn't on with a screw so I can't just unscrew, take it off and put it back on, it's on with a rivet, totally flat top and bottom. Do you have a video on this at all? Thanks for all your info on this machine!

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954

      Sorry, I don’t have a video on that.
      There are certain machines that the customer says, “don’t fix it if it’s going to cost more than the minimum, I’ll just throw it away and buy another machine”.
      This is one of those machines.
      I rarely do more than a tune up and stitch adjustment on these “plastic fantastics”.
      They are truly disposable. Again, sorry about that.

      No customer of mine will ever think it’s logical, to expend $200 to repair a $50 sewing machine, that will only be a money pit long term.
      If you go to the online auction sites, you may find these machines being sold for “parts only”.
      Then after purchase, freight, plus time expended, you’ll have a machine that might work a little while longer.
      Have fun with that.😎👍

    It's sad that the giants, Sears and Singer, are no longer around. Sears is gone completely and Singer merged with Viking and Pfaff to become SVP. Then a few years ago, SVP was acquired by "Platinum Equity". The machines are still produced with the Singer name, but Isaac Singer would be outraged by the lack of quality and just as displeased about the "heavy duty" label as you are. The so-called heavy duty models are just plastic fantastics powered by somewhat more powerful motors that keep going while the plastic bits fail.
    If/when people ask what I think about a sewing machine, I tell them "buy what you want, but know what you're buying". Of course once I say that I get "what do you mean?" So I tell them the difference between good vintage and modern plastic. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate modern machines either, I own a couple of them myself. One is a middle of the road Brother with some bells and whistles, not great but OK for little jobs. The other is a high-end Brother quilting/sewing machine that I bought as a demo at a greatly reduced price a few years ago. It's big, extremely heavy (46lb) has has a considerable amount of metal inside (I opened it up to look) and an almost 12" inch harp for making large quilts, but it does have plastic (or nylon) gears. Yeah, it's an electronic, fancy-schmancy beast with lots of bells and whistles (the damn thing will sew sideways). I like using it when doing free motion quilting. However, as nice as it is, it will never sew as well or last like my great vintage Kennies. They'll still be going strong when the Brother machine is recycle factory fodder. I have quite a few Kennies, including a 158-14001, 1760, 1941, 1755, a 1040 and quite a few other all-metal models. I also have a gorgeous black Singer 301A and a 201-2 which I refurbed myself, both superb machines.
    I am particularly grateful to people like you, who not only teach us a great deal about vintage machines, but how to repair and maintain them as well. And I know I'm not alone in this!
    Thank you very much for all your wonderful videos!
