Coming from the PNW and a year round rider, just but the Gore-Tex version of your favorite jacket for year round riding. I've ridden plenty of downpours with both and while the Z or D liners do technically work, like Brandon said, the outer shell just absorbs the rain and if you're lucky you're gear will dry before your ride home. If not, there's not much worse then putting on damp moist gear. Gore Tex or Laminated is the way to go. It's expensive but trust me, you'll be saving money in the long run when you don't have to buy it after buying other types.
I went through several rain pants before I finally found a pair that doesn't let water through from the seat. As the seat is slightly cupped to support one's posterior, water tends to accumulate, and cheaper rain gear, including frogg toggs, will start leaking through the seams or the cloth, in the most unpleasant location! My current Tourmaster rain pants have held up so far, a dry bum, yay! The Alpinestars Vence Drystar jacket has held up during a two hour, constant rain ride, so that was a good investment.
No question that a Gore-Tex outer layer is the cat’s meow. However, I have used Frogg Toggs for a decade now and really like them in combination with my mesh jacket and pants. I use the Frogg Toggs for both rain and cold. It is amazing how warm Frogg Toggs are over a mesh jacket. My wife and I can ride down to 50 degrees with just a t-shirt, mesh jacket and Frogg Toggs. I can actually go down to 40 for a couple o hours with just a t-shirt. If under 50 for an entire day, I add just a light jacket over my t-shirt and I am good at 40 degrees all day (rode to Alaska and back last May with just this much gear). My wife needs a little more and will add a thermal liner to her jacket to handle prolonged temps below 50. Frogg Toggs are not the best rain gear. I generally get some leakage when riding more than an hour or so in steady rain, but with the mesh jacket and pants, it isn’t a big deal as you dry pretty fast during a coffee break or food break. I would like them to be a little better as rain gear, but the advantage of not having to carry extra gear for cold weather, tips the balance for me towards Frogg Toggs.

I own that red black and white REAX jacket and I absolutely LOVE IT! Liner can go inside or out, and it stores in the drop seat of the jacket. It's a bit tight when worn on the outside, but does a great job. Before you search for it, I got the last size L in the USA those colors. I agonized 4 months before I found it. My wife was sick of hearing about it lol
Packable rain gear is probably the most versatile because of you are riding when there are just wet roads after a rain and want your bottom half not to get wet from road spray it is the way to go
I can't recommend the Frogg Toggs enough. Riding a few hundred miles in the rain on a long trip and no water went through the shell. You do get perspiration inside but that seems a common item for all rain jackets I have tried.

I have a bit of everything. The jacket and pants are packable Scott Pro DP rain gear, my boots are goretex lined TCX Clima Surround, and my gloves are some z liner type from Spidi (Spidi Rainshield). Only the boots are used when it isn't also raining (as they are my only pair of riding boots), the rest is used in rain only....except I haven't had any rain to try them out in since buying them. lol
Hi. Firstly great topic, I’m sure that like tires, this subject could cause major debates. One big con that I think you over looked when it came to the laminated gear was when you fall and damage the outer layer your water protection is compromised. Obviously I found this out from personal experience. I believe that this little fact should be considered particularly if you spend a couple of thousand dollars on good riding gear and then stupidly take it off road. Just saying :-))
I use a fluorescent green cycling rain jacket over my mesh riding jacket and it works like a charm. It also has some night reflective stripes at the back just in case.
The perfect setup. A goretex jacket will always be too hot in the summer. A mesh is too cold in spring and autumn, but one can just add layers underneath.
PNW year round rider here. First Gear Kilimanjaro jacket and Alpinestars Andes pants. No matter how hard it rains, I’m good. I also like the Reax waterproof gloves. Not too warm though

I don’t know why but anything I buy for motorcycle gear doesn’t fit everything is different, I usually wear xl on everything in regular clothes but Motorcycle gear I have bought 4x for a jacket and rain gear I had to go to a store and swap the pants out because the top was 2x and the pants were 4x just seems like everything is on the small side
TEXTILES BITE. There. I've said it. Over 75 degrees, they feel like you're jogging in a plastic trash bag... you SWEAT your ASS off. LEATHER... breathes and conforms. You may get a little WARM, but you won't be drenched in sweat.
He's lying. There's not thing like "jacket might get some water". That's bullshit. When riding in heavy rain it's just a question of time when your jacket weights a ton and you need to dry it for a long time 😊

Best all weather gear I ever bought was an Aerostich suite. That thing is life changing for a rider with 4 seasons.

i carry a collapsible umbrella in my backpack. this will give you time to put on the liner and not get wet. then you stow the umbrella back in the bag
over the jacket removable waterproof liner is WAY better, it also blocks the wind.

If I recall correctly their waterproofing performed extremely poorly on fortnine's testing.
I just looked again. They're alright, but not the best, even without goretex in the mix they're around the alpinestars version.
