My Week with the 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing!

  • I spend a week with the manual transmission 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing to see what it's like to live with. After lapping it on the racetrack last year and getting a great first impression with it, spending more time with it this week highlighted more of the pros and cons of this sport sedan. Overall though, it's an absolute blast to drive and while it might not get as much love as a BMW M3 from the masses, it's the underdog, the unique choice that stands out simply because you won't see one everyday. And for that alone, I think the CT4-V Blackwing will have lasting appeal beyond it's great driving dynamics. What do you think about these? Thanks to Cadillac for providing this vehicle!

I've owned my '22 CT4-V Blackwing for about three months now. I cross-shopped it with the M3, and wound up going with the Blackwing when I found a lightly used one with 1800 miles. It's got over 4500 miles on it now, and I don't regret the choice one bit. I've never owned a car that's just happy to be doing whatever I'm doing. Yeah it can do 180+ mph, but it's just as fun on a backroad below 60 mph. That's what GM's chassis engineers get that BMW's don't: these cars shouldn't be about the lap times, they should be about the driver. That's why you should get a Blackwing over an M3.

@@G0ddEityawesome Yea, but we also shouldn't reward bad behavior when the brands lose their way regarding driver first and luxury second. The only BMWs that seem to still be for drivers are all CS or Comp Cars that are out of reach for the everyday man. I get it. BMW still has more prestige, but for driving enthusiasts I would hope the drive means more than the badge.

I love my CT4 BW. I've put 7k miles on mine. I average 17mpg which is fair. Ma old sti averaged about that. Did the stage 1 tune with the JB4 from tapout tuning, picked up a ton. Made 490whp for you guys that want a bit more power. It was cheap and easy power. And I've now spent good time with the car, and spent time with the M3 Competition, the CT5 BW, the RS3, and the C45 AMG,. I have to say. The CT4 BW imo hits the mark better than all of these. The only gripe I have is stereo. Sound quality is great, just no bass. But it's chassis feels better than all of them. It's more engaging to drive than all of them. The similarly equipped M3 comp was almost $20k more and honestly, didn't care for it. Felt numb to drive and the manual was unacceptable imo. The CT5 is the only other one I really enjoyed but, I still have more fun in the 4. The 5 is cool and makes V8 noises. But it's a lot for.the street and it's big, and feels big. The 4 feels like you're driving a small sports car that happens to have useable backseats and trunk. The smaller euro cars imo, felt cheap in comparison and no manual.

@@MrLF4 I went to tapping and had the jb4 and tune done. They did some custom mapping, they used my car for initial development. I did the brisk racing silvers, a colder plug, and we did tapouts carbon airbox. My car made 515whp. It was a nice cool day so optimal for boosted Dyno runs. But the car feels fantastic. This car is absolutely awesome. I wish I had the bank for one, and where I live, I think it would garner more street cred, due to being wayyyy less common (everyone here has a leased Euro car).
I love the fact that Cadillac built cars for car people...they have built what their customers actually want, as a farewell to their ICE performance vehicles (though I think they, and other OEM's are going to back-pedal on their plans to go EV only, in the not so distant future).
Another great, honest, non-biased video, and I appreciate you mention both the pros and cons of the car, as well as the pros and cons of the vehicles that would be cross-shopped with it. At the end of the day, anything to do with your senses is purely subjective, and I agree with the general notion you bring up, that people should buy and drive what they want, without getting caught up in specs, and/or what everyone else is driving (hence why I daily drive a Focus ST instead of a GTI or WRX)...

Honorable Mention goes to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
IDK if we should consider the Alfa as another contender in this category. What do you think Matt?
I am personally glad to see that Cadillac has addressed this interior. Previous generations felt like you were sitting in the lobby of a Cadillac dealership. Both are/were miserable places to behold.
Now if this CT4 had a V8, then I would consider it given the posh(er) interior versus the ZL1 6M. Yes I am aware that the CT5 exists but that model is simply not on our radar. I miss having a V8 _and_ a manual transmission.
However, as of lately my wife and I have been eyeing the C8 Corvette w/ Z51 package. Unfortunately, she thinks the passenger side of the C8 leaves her feeling rather isolated. We still have plenty of research to perform before we make a final conclusion.

Your type R Type S Golf R and even the higher trim GR Corolla is closing in on that with mark ups. So you sit there and really got to scratch your head wondering what the hell you are getting for your money with those vs the CT4BW - worse interior, non power pass seat, less options, FWD bias vs RWD, 450+ HP vs 310ish HP, over 100+ TQ vs others.. If people want fuel economy; get a toyota Corolla. Now if you want fun, performance, and a track car...you gotta expect 16 MPG

It's a shame I feel like can't trust GM reliability, because there's some models of Cadillac out that I would really love to give a shot.

I have owned and own BMW Ms and CTS-V (V3) and CT5-V Blackwing. Something random and minor might happen to the GM car but it's rarely the powertrain long-term. Can't say the same of my experience with high-output German cars - particularly after the warranty expires. The Germans make a better luxury car and Cadillac makes a better performance/track car in my experience. Long-term reliability may not be guaranteed with GM but it's unquestionably better than the Germans (and a LOT cheaper to fix when there is an issue.)

GM has a very good rep for reliability now. The dark ages of GM are well behind them. As Russell mentioned better than the Germans and much lower to fix if you do need it.

The 3.6tt v6 has been fairly reliable when it comes to their turbocharged engine. Hell probably more reliable than their v8's with the DFM or AFM.

@@MattMaranMotoring I did notice he spoke mostly about the feeling It gave you when you drove it. Can’t blame you. However, the car is absolutely hideous. It’s a souped up old person’s car. When you look at the M3 from so many angles it is light years better. Especially that rear end section it looks so aggressive. Then you start adding things like the carbon package and it just blows the Cadillac out of the water visually.

@@MattMaranMotoring I totally appreciate what you have said. However, about 2 years ago after people stopped complaining about the new grill. I find in all the videos I have watched about the M3, as I have ordered a Isle of Man Green one, people have been super positive about the looks of the car and many have grown to like that front end especially with that very nice front slpitter. Also, I just didn't like the Cadillacs interior. It looks so cheap, out of a parts bin for GM. Either way they're both manuals and that's something we can totally agree on I'm sure.

I was about to factory order a CT4V (non blackwing) but canceled when I found out GM pulled ads from Twitter because of Musk. I don't need companies forcing their politics down my throat. Going with the C43 AMG instead 👍.

Hard to believe someone with enough money to afford the car has such poor reading comprehension skills. GM like MANY companies has said it will PAUSE advertising to see which direction Twitter takes. Given Musk has already posted conspiracy crap about the Pelosis (I'm no fan), it appears GM was prudent. Musk has also moronically fired a lot of employees against the provisions of the WARN act (last week), begged fired employees to return (this week), and it's only Monday
I'd hold off putting money on this platform as well (not to mention i read this morning theyre seeing a 500% increase in some hate speech after Musk fired the people who manage efforts in this area.)
