Primitive Mysteries (1931): Yuriko and the Martha Graham Dance Company

Film clip of Yuriko and the Martha Graham Dance Company in a 1964 performance of "Primitive Mysteries "(1931) at Connecticut College. The revival of "Primitive Mysteries" was part of a memorial program that honored Martha Graham's longtime mentor, musical director, and friend, Louis Horst who had died that January.
The cast included: Yuriko, Janet Aaron, Takako Asakawa, Jean Colonomos, Priscilla Frank, Carol Fried, Juliet Fisher, Diane Gray, Phyllis Gutelius, Kazako Hirabayashi, Noemi Lapzeson, Marcia Lerner, and Molly Moore. The rehearsal director was original cast member Sophie Maslow.

At Juilliard, when you brought in a piece to Louis' class, he sat with his eye on a detective novel in one hand and from his lips a cigarette with a hanging ash and when you finished performing your piece, you thought he hadn't really seen it. Just as Agnes deMille described him in her book, Dance To The Piper.
Then Louis started to critique your piece. "Go back," he would say, "to the fourth measure; No! The fourth measure. There...where you raise your arm and manage to twist yourself into a pretzel." He had seen your piece...maybe better than you had wanted him to see it. I was honored to be in Louis' last class.

This is misleading. The dance was made in 1931. Yuriko performed it later.
