BMW Z4 - is the base sDrive20i really a sports car?

The BMW Z4 Roadster is an exceptionally well-designed car. It elegantly references BMW's open-top history and adds modern elements with a high-end interior. The engineering is also worth mentioning - BMW used a lot of light materials to lighten the body. Resulting in very stiff chassis by the standards of open cars. The ride is still comfortable and precise thanks to this. But don't expect a sharp sports car. Even with the most powerful turbocharged six-cylinder, the Z4 is more of a touring GT. The video shows the very basic sDrive20i with a two-liter four-cylinder. Performance is surprisingly sufficient, but the problem is that the wheels are too big and wide. You can feel their weight limiting the work of the chassis and the width limiting the feedback for the driver. Should you opt for buying one of these, we would recommend the version with the more powerful four-cylinder turbo engine sDrive30i, automatic transmission, electronically controlled limited slip differential and the smallest available wheels from the configurator menu!

i have this car since August, coming from a F87 M2 Comp (my driving profile changed and i had to switch to a car with a reasonable fuel consumption) and i have to say that i like how planted to the street the car feels, especially in wide corners and i like the nice low seating position; the steering feels a bit numb, but has quite a direct turn in, the flipside of the coin though is the gear-engine combination, the power supply from the 2.0l engine feels very unspectacular, it feels punchy from 1400 to 3000rpm then the torque completely drops to almost nothing; i mean the speedometer still climbs but it feels very boring; however this is a subjective impression and objectively its faster, you can do 100-200 in about 21sec, most hot hatches will drop you though. IMHO the engine is limiting the potential of the chassis, so if youre looking for a sports car with a reasonable fuel consumption (my average in this car is 7,2l/100km) you better go for the 30i engine, the Toyota Supra 2.0 or a Toyota GR 86. I will most probably not keep this car for a very long time and switch to a 3 series diesel as my everyday driver (commuting to work, etc.) and back to a M2 F87/ M2 G87 as track/fun car.

Does it feel anything like an actual sports car vs a chopped up sports sedan? Far enough from a 3 or 2 series with RWD?

@@RomanticPopPunk Wrong on both points. BMW gives you get 5 years of free servicing in Europe and resell values are higher too. Also the Supra has an ugly interior and is claustrophobic.

As one of the last manuals avaliable this is a decent car and a good investment. The Z4 sDrive20i is an overlooked option for sure.

i just drove the B58 version of it - its very powerfull and Auto box is tuned to perfection - so remembering this BMW manual boxes being way less perfect to japanese ones i think manual make no sence - but more powerfull 2l version should be quite fun because of lesser weight all these cars struggle the most from

I feel like the B48 is a super under appreciated engine. It will probably be the foundation for amature motorsports once they become a little more affordable, but you can already get them for next to nothing in mini coopers.
However, I think I all B48 owners can agree, 4 gear is just souless with this engine.

The B48 is also extremely tunable, one guy is over 450whp (550 crank) on the stock internals, but he reckons it can go up to 600whp

depends on what you like, MX-5 feels entirely different due to being N/A. The Z4 also sounds way better..
