It’s because we learn to run in shoes which is unnatural. (Not saying shoe’s shouldn’t exist I don’t want to step on sharp things). If you run barefoot on a hard surface you’ll naturally run with perfect form. You can’t slam your heel down, you can run on your tippy toes. You’ll run perfectly on the balls of your feet like any expert would suggest. We didn’t evolve millions of years along side nikes. Even when we did have shoes in more recent history they were minimalist. I don’t know why it sounds like a conspiracy theory lmao. But we wear big clunky shoes the body wasn’t designed to run with and its crazy to think they injure us.
I have arthritis in my knees (at 22.😭) I learned proper run form in middle school and can now absolutely feel if I'm not running properly. Now, when I run, I *zoom.* This is absolutely something that everyone should learn. ❤😂
Thanks a lot for making me concise about a thing that i wasn't even aware of to begins with, now i have to actively try to land " normal " while runnning
This actually helped me so much I was thinking about this today and I blame it not feeling natural on me getting older. When did I forget how to run naturally?!?!
Because of heel support in footwear. The book ‘born to run’ explains in great detail the biomechanics of this and also why running on you toes is absolutely not going to lead to injuries like old mate says in the video. Running barefoot shows you how your feet actually want to run- on your toes. They splay and catch the ground with each stride. This is proper running technique. It’ll give you sore calves when you first do it, but they’ll adjust quickly and your running will be more efficient, safer and your feet and legs healthier from engaging all of the little stabilising muscles. Run barefoot on grass sports fields or beach sand. Use flat soled shoes and you won’t land on your heels because it won’t make sense to. 🙂
@@fattommy4436he said landing on your toes in front of you will lead to injury. If your feet are landing really far in front of you then it doesn't matter if yo land on your heels or toes, your gonna get injured because there's no way to correctly transfer that impact force across the whole body. Instead it stay below the knee since the knee would be heavily bent.
If you run on threadmill its one of the reasons. Your brain is not used to run and still be on same place, so it goes to overdrive. And overthinking anything is way to hell.
@@cheeseeygamer2997 I don’t care what he said, he’s wrong. I’ve been running on my toes for 15 years since I read the book I mentioned. Used to do 100k a week in Dunlop volleys. Never injured from running. Landing on your toes maximises the suspension through your foot and ankle, but you don’t land on them really far out in front of you, you stay balanced. The way he exaggerates that is pure nonsense. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about and neither do you. Have a great day x
What he taught is how to run while conserving energy, what you need to do is lean forward a lil bit and then catch yourself "that how you move" and people told me to use your calf muscle as a spring instead of quad muscle, some people also says that your hell shouldn't touch the ground before your feet goes up again
@@themr_wilsonThe way he's "running" in the video, pushing would just send you higher off of the ground. You still wouldn't move. You HAVE to move your legs in front along with your body.
However, if you are going for sheer speed for some reason it is best to mostly run on your toes and your heel should barely touch the ground, your knees should also stay slightly bent. This makes each step more springy, and if you angle your body to be lower you can propel yourself forewards for added speed. Use this to your advantage. It has saved me more times than i can count.
It's insane how quickly this helped my ankle pain. I have a screw as an ankle due to a skating accident and I was having ankle pain. This is only my second day running with this tip and I had ZERO ankle pain today!
Depends on where the focus of education was in your younger years. My gym teacher from age 6 to 9 was a fat old man who would chase us around in a golf cart on laps. He gave zero fuxks about form. Add on the internet breaking down and changing fundamental ways in which humans interact, people can fall into the cracks of knowledge in weird ways.
And a good portion of the planet actually uses a treadmill like that, and they're hurting their knees, instead of trying to be some funny guy who can't even get higher then 50 likes, how about you help the world too? Because it's pretty obvious 99% of people here didn't find you funny neither did i
You have the right idea. I used to run over 10+ miles a day for over 10 years and always ran on the forefront of my foot. I never had knee, ankle or foot problems-ever. Avoid large clunky shoes and go with a minimalist shoe such as Nike free runs. Happy running. 🏃
In other words, "YOU DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING IT'S A COMMA NOT A PERIOD AND HE'S THE PERSON WHO KNOWS MOST OUT OF THE PEOPLE WHO WILL WATCH THE VIDEO." WOW. What a moron.
Thanks for showing us how to run without perpetual motion. I never thought about doing it like that.I don't even have to leave the house anymore to go for a run! I'm just pulling your chain 😂. Coming from someone with a bad back I appreciate the advice. Thank you. Sincerely.
i am trying to learn how to run, and it has been incredibly difficult. i think this will help. I refuse to give up. i am committed. thank you for posting this!!
Hey man, what helped me get into this was increasing my cadence. Try to run with a cadence of about 180. Use a metronome if you need to (there are great and free apps). Increasing your cadence forces you to place your feet below your torso instead of in front of it. This should help you naturally get your foot placement like he demonstrated in the video :) Source: Ive learned myself to run like this because my knees hurt. Havent had any pain anymore in the last 2 years.
His advice means well but is bad, land in the range of mid foot to balls of your toes. if you are heel striking you're over striding then shorten your stride length a touch, knee drive actually helps correct this. D1 track / xc runner advice :)
For those thar are complaining it actually happens to a lot of ppl at gym whe. They try to jog at 8 miles and hours... and often end up getting sore even before the strength training starts. He is helping so we need to thank him
Toe running is the natural way that humans run, and have done for hundreds of thousands of years. Bizarre take that it’s wrong from this guy. If you heel strike at a sprint without shoes on you’ll break bone. You land on your toes and they act as suspension to distribute the load through your calf muscles. Hunter gatherer tribes still run like this
@@Liam-oh2gbhe's not saying to not land on your toes, but to not step forward and land on your toes. The part of form he's trying to correct here isn't which part you land on, but that some people step to far and their feet land significantly in front of their body. If your foot lands far in front then your knee had to be significantly bent which won't allow impact forces to transfer up and dissipate across the body. This localization of the force can cause injuries to tendons and joints in the lower half your legs and in your feet.
@@killawatz19xxx27 imagine those running leg prosthetics that handicapped sprinters use. kinda reminds you of someone running on their toes doesnt it? there is good reason for that
@@joselynnschmidt5795 if you go for a run next time, try to up your cadence by 10 from what you normally do. You will automatically apply his advice from this video.
Thanks. I never had a problem with walking or running, but now everything is going to be done manually and far less efficient than when I never thought about it.
The amount of differing opinions on the internet about all things fitness is staggering. It feels like no two “experts” agree on a lot of the most basic principles and techniques. Me, I just work out the way I learned when I was a young man, but modify the things that my body can no longer do quite as well as it used to. At nearly 50 years old I’m still healthy, still quite strong, and never got fat.
If you've ever tried to sneak barefoot... That's also how you should run. One of the problems we run into is the way our shoes are designed incentivized us to use our heels more. Get a pair of those shoes that are foot shaped with individual toes and you'll start walking better within a month.
I used to run landing on my heels. Got injured doing that, now I can’t run for 6 weeks. Thanks for sharing this, can’t wait to try it out when I can actually run again.
whats insane is this was all drilled into me in dance that i dont even realize when im doing it! we really should be teaching folks this young so proper form when exercising is always there!
I read this under a post of an influencer named Abby, someone commented that u should run as if every step you take youre trying to hold yourself back from falling (by leaning forward)!
A running coach told me don't move forward with your legs, move forward by rotating your hips forward. Let your hips do the carrying. Idk if that's right, but it helped me
I read the Pose Running Method book and I took a few classes with a Pose instructor many years ago in Brooklyn, NY. It helped me a lot. I can always spot the Pose runners!
I learned this when i was in high school, ran track and liked to join the cross country team for conditioning when i could. My track coach gave us all this lesson. Not going to lie, i thought it was stupid at first but it legit helped keep reduced the pain. Once i listened to him.
@ThatElmTree have fun. I enjoyed it. I don't see my reply but yes it's around 3 miles for cross country. I liked to join the cross country team on days I could because I knew a few of the girls and gave me more time with them. The cross country and couch didn't mind he was also my math teacher. Obviously not everyone is going to be given the green light to train with a tream they aren't on. Listen to your body and take care of yourself.
This is useful. I've kind of forgotten how to run. But, I've gotten into using my trampoline more so I'm glad that should help me figure out my form. I know trying what other people tell me after telling me how stupid I look. Which sometimes results in something painful, so usually I try once and give up. Something where I find my own way sounds like good advice.
I'm okay not being the fastest anymore but the real kicker is finding that right way for yourself. Find myself jumping first then run with a little bounce with each step.

sameee bad form really affecting me. i wish i learn this faster😭
Not shot you zoom
Thanks a lot for making me concise about a thing that i wasn't even aware of to begins with, now i have to actively try to land " normal " while runnning
Now I'm running like an ostrich 💀💀💀💀💀
This is exactly what I just moonwalk on the treadmill at the gym. So much simpler and saves my joints. Please do that in the next video
This is actually great advice, thanks.
That’s probably the best way it’s been explained to me. Though I still have to worry about my weak ankles haha
Thanks for all the helpful advice guys!!
"you run wrong" proceeds to show you how to run in place
You obviously still move your feet forward, the point is that they should move with the rest of your body, not drag it along like a ball and chain.
Commenter doesn't understand pushing off the ground
@@themr_wilsonThe way he's "running" in the video, pushing would just send you higher off of the ground. You still wouldn't move. You HAVE to move your legs in front along with your body.
I get that you flunked out of kindergarten but even you can infer that you need M O M E N T U M
Instructions unclear : *I am now watching my treadmill spin with no person on it while my back is broken*
Man is a better PE teacher than all of the ones i ever had combined
LAND OF THE LUSTROUS PFP LESGOOOOOOOO BASED AF PEAK ANIME TASTE there's a manga for it btw its gorgeous.
@@parzavaal5335 I know i'm up to date AND YES FINALLY SOMEONE KNOWS ABOUT IT!
Instructions unclear. Still running in place
It's insane how quickly this helped my ankle pain. I have a screw as an ankle due to a skating accident and I was having ankle pain. This is only my second day running with this tip and I had ZERO ankle pain today!
Crazy to think that humanity has gotten to a point where some of us need this tutorial on how to run 😭
“Try this injury, jump on your heels!” 🤦♂️
dude literally explained how to run, what's next, how to eat, how to lay down? 😂😂
To be fair, a good portion of the planet could be taught how to eat, AND how to get TF up so they can lay down lol.
And a good portion of the planet actually uses a treadmill like that, and they're hurting their knees, instead of trying to be some funny guy who can't even get higher then 50 likes, how about you help the world too? Because it's pretty obvious 99% of people here didn't find you funny neither did i
@@oda.. why u mad?🤣
You have the right idea. I used to run over 10+ miles a day for over 10 years and always ran on the forefront of my foot. I never had knee, ankle or foot problems-ever. Avoid large clunky shoes and go with a minimalist shoe such as Nike free runs. Happy running. 🏃
That's pretty awesome advice for folks that forgot how to run
Dude you've got those classic Jim Carrey mannerisms.
..... My heels hurt now. Thank you bro.
Learning to run on the front of my feet(without my heels touching the ground) has been a game changer. No more knee pain from running.
Love his personality! It’s fun
Yeah! Like if Jim Carrey became a fitness instructor instead of an actor.
Instructions unclear, I started levitating.
In other words. "DO NOTHING"
WOW. What a genius.
You lean forward as your feet go up and down under your center of mass.
You push off the ground. Wow! Now you're running!
In other words, "YOU DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING IT'S A COMMA NOT A PERIOD AND HE'S THE PERSON WHO KNOWS MOST OUT OF THE PEOPLE WHO WILL WATCH THE VIDEO."
WOW.
This should help you naturally get your foot placement like he demonstrated in the video :)
Source: Ive learned myself to run like this because my knees hurt. Havent had any pain anymore in the last 2 years.
Honestly one of the clearest explanations for good running form
Now you’ve got me freaked out about how my feet are landing.
He is helping so we need to thank him
I disagree, landing on my toes felt weird at first but it immediately changes how running feels and the impact my joints take.
You land on your toes?
@@killawatz19xxx27 imagine those running leg prosthetics that handicapped sprinters use. kinda reminds you of someone running on their toes doesnt it? there is good reason for that
@@corvonics6383Exactly. You simply have to look at most land mammals, their whole leg is built with only the ball of their foot touching the ground.
I’m not sure what’s worse, the advice, or the socks 🤣
Nothing wrong with the advice
@@mark0032the advice is literally running in place... did you ever hear that before?
@@joselynnschmidt5795 if you go for a run next time, try to up your cadence by 10 from what you normally do.
You will automatically apply his advice from this video.
That's a really nice tip!
I was in physical therapy learning to walk again as a teenager and never got to learn to run properly so this is great information!
Don’t jump and land on your heels. It’ll hurt like hell!
That's the point
No shit.
Bro just run barefoot, your natural instincts will kick in. Running incorrectly barefoot will hurt a lot
Your content is always so helpful thank you
That “jump up and landing on the heels” started my morning right😂
Impressive. Very nice. Now let's start the treadmill.
Cross country is 3 miles, correct?
@ThatElmTree ~3 miles, yes. Not always exactly and some can be shorter.
@@bleach_drink_me that's impressive, I'm doing track next year so thats great to know :D
You had to be taught a basic instinct? Lol
This is useful. I've kind of forgotten how to run.
But, I've gotten into using my trampoline more so I'm glad that should help me figure out my form.
I know trying what other people tell me after telling me how stupid I look. Which sometimes results in something painful, so usually I try once and give up.
Something where I find my own way sounds like good advice.
i love that you're putting this out there and will have something to look back on and regret doing in the future.
I never knew I needed this video, it makes sense why people in track did that now😭
Idk... they didn't just stay in place, did they?
Thank you for making me self concious about running
I'm okay not being the fastest anymore but the real kicker is finding that right way for yourself. Find myself jumping first then run with a little bounce with each step.
this may be like a "stupid" tutorial but i really needed this thank you.
This is actually helpful because im learning how to run again after dislocating both of my knees
No!! runnin ghurts my heels!!! i wonder why !!! 🤣 Thanks for the video, its a good start for me. pull and switch.... pull and switch....
Best advice ds ever gave was run in place, now lean forward
