Joanne Jonas is wonderful in this video! She wasn’t afraid to express herself while singing Turn Back O Man! It’s hard to believe that she’ll be turning 70 this year!
I love this who video, but I particularly like the part when Jesus is at the window: "Earth shall be fair and all her people one, not til that hour shall God's whole will be done. Now, even now, once more from earth to sky, peels forth in joy, man's old undaunted cry. Earth shall be fair, and all her people one."
That’s sort of the whole conceit of the movie. Once they start following Jesus, everyone else just disappears (I have no idea how they were able to get some of the shots with nobody else around). So they’re clearly not in the same world as they used to be. If they don’t see anyone else, I’m assuming nobody else can see them. Maybe they’re not even really there.
@@Dularr Hmmmm...that's a risky proposition depending what part of the country you are in....I wouldn't advise breaking into people's houses cause you could end up getting shot

Always had the impression that the cast were encouraged to improvise and 'wing it' during the filming. With the range of their physical movements and facial expressions, it seems to be that way.
Somewhere, years ago, I found a site that listed all the places in NYC used for filming the movie. I printed it out; and have no idea where it is. I’ll have to do it again. This mansion always fascinated me. It recalls ‘The Gilded Age’ in New York to me. My heart breaks and I cry at the end of ‘ALL FOR THE BEST’, of course. Too much pain there.
This is a very comical way of the lady of the night warning the sinner to repent of his ways. Ha! Ha! Ha! Presentation in an elegant, funny and tasteful way!
I commented on another "Godspell" video that this character is depicted (and described in the original theatrical script) as being a bit more sexy than the others -- she's supposed to give off a "Mary Magdelene" vibe with her "showgirl" feathered headband, the red spots on her cheeks, and the occasional "Mae West" impressions. In live stage performances, this song is quite a bit more strident -- they toned it down a notch or two for the film version (possibly because this song is usually performed by an alto or a mezzo-soprano but this same actress had a different part in the original theatrical version which is usually performed by a first soprano).
Also if anyone ever wondered about the location, it's the Andrew Carnegie Mansion. I think it's now the called Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
If memory serves, Joanne Jonas -- who was in the original Off-Broadway musical along with David Haskell, Gilmer McCormick, Jeffrey Mylett, and Robin Lamont (all of whom are in this film) -- did not sing this role originally. Lynn Thigpen has the role which Joanne performed in the musical, while Joanne is playing the role in the film which Sonia Manzano played. This role is typically played by an alto (often with a strong belt). Granted, Joanne must have a powerful voice since she was in the original stage production and does not need to project so much for film...but she's clearly more of a soprano than an alto.

Yes, she's still living and operates a "better living" spa-like facility in Northern California. She states that acting/singing in Godspell had such a profound impact on her life it set her in this direction. After Godspell, she completely left acting. This is easily one of the most memorable scenes and songs in the musical.
Yes. Joanne is still alive. She’ll be turning 70 next year. Also, Katie, Robin, Gilmer, Jerry, and Victor Garber are the only other people from the movie that are still alive.
the song speaks of people falling to temptation and warns them to repent. jesus says earth is fair as in our free will so we have the choice to sin or follow god.
This movie is 50 years old this year (2023) and hasn't aged a single day.

A classic i want to visit daily to remind me of my faults❤

"Peals forth in joy."
i love this for victor garber he made a great big smile on the window
I never thought about it before, but it just hit me. These people are just trespassing during the whole musical 😂
Don't see anything posted. It's not trespassing until they ask you to leave or it's posted.

I was 11 years old when I saw this in the theaters, and have had a crush on Joanne Jonas ever since...sigh. 😍
My favorite girl in the movie. Beautiful.
Joanne Jonas. The Bronx New York.
Her singularity of beauty is a unique treasure.

A 1973 Classic that will always be know/remembered in movies/theatre/forever-

"Earth is old, and none may count her days." A lot of truths in this movie I never realized as a child playing this part.
"Old now is earth".

@@OreadNYC I watched the TV footage where she sings Bless the Lord, and got the impression that Turn Back O Man fits better to her vocal range.
When I was a kid, I thought they were saying "Turn back OLD man" . . . . Haha . . .
I never understood this song but I always liked it just because she was singing it
xD same
ME TOO!!! and i even sang it in a high school performance...
Me too
This was my favorite performance of this musical.
This one is sooooo apropriate for our current times...all times but recently rediscovered it and Wow.
So much talent!
I love how she moves, so theatrical burlesque
I would love to watch dis with my niece and nephew and talk about Jesus. Hope they put this on TCM soon
"come here, Jesus, I've got something to show 'ya."
Oh f***!!!! I never realized that!!! How sneaky/clever!!
The best. ✌

Okay, reasons:
The high A5 during “Bless the Lord”
The high C6 she does imitating the violin in “We Beseech Thee”
I love the costumes
She looks very much like the girl from Fashdance/The L Word.
Jennifer Beals.
I thought so, too!
Not even close 😂😂😂😂
They must’ve been warm in those layers of clothes
I believe this tune inspired the Mr. Grinch song...they sound remarkably similar.
Mr. Grinch came first.

Joanne Jonas has a lot of Groucho Marks similarities expressions in this performance.

Danny Im afraid you missed the message
I hate that guy who is a mix of Mario and Joaquin Phoenix >
That is Jerry Sroka, who continued acting after Godspell, and whose daughter is Liz Sroka, best known as Tali from the Mass Effect series.
Why?
