  • One of the biggest - if not the biggest - games of 2023 launched this week. Nintendo's Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has recently a massively positive reaction. John discusses his review and shares more thoughts on the game, while digging more deeply into the eternal question - is it too big for Switch? Meanwhile, Rich drops in from time off to share his impressions with the Asus ROG Ally and A Plague Tale: Requiem gets a 60fps patch... but what does it actually do?

I’d like to see more physics in games. We had a trend of it in the 2000s but a lot of games just ignore physics while concentrating on lighting like Ray tracing. To me, an interactive experience is more fun with physics.

Teardown is both. Fully destructible voxel environments with a fast ray traced renderer that does not require GPUs with hardware acceleration.
Looks a bit noisy at times, but it is really impressive considering you can run it on a 1050. And the gameplay is so much fun.

To me games have regressed in gameplay. Every AAA game these days is an “open world action adventure with some RPG and stealth mechanics”. Back in early 2000s there was so much promise that the new hardware will be used for better AI and more interactivity. What we got instead was just shinier graphics, vast empty/dead maps and gimmicky shit like horse balls shrinking in cold.

The only physics I wish they would stop with is knockdown/ragdoll.
If Link gets knocked over in BotW and TotK it takes FOR-EVEEEER for him to get back up. WTF?! Stop that. Get up already so I can play the game.

Not due to Ray Tracing. It's due to the weak ass CPUs in the PS4\Xbone. The Jaguar CPUs in them were made for low-end laptops like chromebooks. The SOCs on them were weak CPUs paired with high end GPU(PS4) or mid range GPU (Xbone). Since graphical fidelity is what most gamers want in new consoles. Sure these consoles can do physics like in Zelda but the graphics would basically look like Zelda but at a higher resolution.

    • @steel5897
      @steel5897 Рік тому +18

Zelda is brilliant because it's using physics to take the DNA of using stuff to interact with the envrionment to solve problems from a binary state of "have item, unlock solution" from classic Zelda games to a full systemized playground. In Zelda 1 you got a raft item and crossed a river in a straight line to reach a dungeon, in TotK you can build that raft using whatever materials you want, simply build a bridge over the river, a hoverboat, you might use a rocket to fly over it, or just find another way. It's using technology to actually evolve a franchise instead of doing the same thing with better visuals.
But every game just having physics for the sake of it is not something I think would turn out that well, some games don't need to focus on it.

Ultrahand sounds like a pretty silly name but it's really an homage to the "Ultrahand" toy that Shigeru Miyamoto's mentor, the inventor of the Game Boy and the father of Metroid, Gunpei Yokoi, made for Nintendo in 1966 that basically started the transition of their business from playing cards into toys and eventually video games.

I think part of the reason why we aren't seeing much physics driven gameplay systems in AAA games today is ironically because of the focus on realism. Like even in a game with good physics such as Red Dead Redemption 2 Arthur can't just pull up a giant magnet and start manipulating objects or burn a patch of grass to somehow generate enough uplift to lift him or have the ability to glue objects together to make crazy machines.
Focus on realism can hold back interesting gameplay ideas. A huge advantage for Zelda is that it can go full cartoon physics and add pretty much any crazy idea developers come up with like fusing an eyeball to an arrow to turn it into a guided projectile why not!

Also GTA IV was accused of having unrealistic by some, and too realistic driving physics by others but the that's kind of irrelevant imo. GTA IV driving was just mechanically deeper, more engaging, and fun.

There's a lot of angry children who were not only not present to watch the medium grow from the 8-bit days onward, they also lack the ability to even try to understand how the limitations of hardware even to the present day push developers to make very specific and difficult decisions in order to achieve their vision.
What I think is important here is that John understands, better than most, that as interesting as "the numbers" are for resolution and framerate, they are not the ONLY thing that matters. You can tell that the people who bitterly screech about Redfail getting dinged for performance (and everything else it does wrong) while whining about "exceptions" being made for Switch titles don't actually understand this at all. They're so caught up about performance that they forget the medium encompasses more than this.
This isn't to say that performance ISN'T important, but context for that performance, and everything else about a given game, is also very important. Look at Jedi Survivor, a game that struggles hard on basically every platform even after patches, has demanding hardware requirements for PC that shut out a lot of players from the best visual quality and performance... and yet people still appear to really have enjoyed their time with that game despite the obvious technical flaws.

Nah ... I do get that Zelda TOTK is a great game. But the "best of the best of all times" according to it's ratings?!? I think it's a bit overhyped as well.
Because there really are games like that with similar elements like Immortals Fenyx Rising. And it offers spoken dialogs, high quality video renderings and a smooth experience on let's say XBox. For me the point is valid that games where criticized on poor performance on XBox One S or Series S (because of console limitations) but a 20 fps game on Switch is not? Not even slightly? The point is: Switch would not have to be so slow. Switch Oled would already been a great opportunity to upgrade the chip as well. We also have Steam Deck. So better hardware is available. But Nintendo chooses not to upgrade while games like Cyberpunk or Witcher 3 are criticized (and lost points) for not holding 60 fps straight.
It seems like Nintendo getting a special treatment while on the other side it seems to be cool to rant about XBox these days
I get John rant about old platforms and games. I really do. But Switch is Nintendos "state of the art" console of the moment! Zelda TOTK is their brand new game! This is far away from Fate of Atlantis on Amiga 500!
When Cyberpunk run poorly on One S and PS4 is was also criticized, the new generation was barely available at that time. So Nintendo should be no different here.

On the Plague Tale 60 FPS update: I've been replaying it in NG+ and I actually haven't noticed the rats animating at half-speed at all. It's difficult to tell, because there are so many of them at once, and they skitter around and blend together so much that it's almost impossible to notice, in my opinion.
I did notice, however, that some NPCs animate at half the refresh rate at a certain distance. The only point I've only really thought about it was in the market area near the beginning when I noticed one of the guys cutting wood was animating a bit weirdly. They come back to full refresh rate as you approach them, though.
I originally played the game in 40 FPS, but I think the game really benefits from the increased frame rate, even if it isn't a fast-paced action game. It just feels nicer to play, and for those action moments when you do need to get away from an enemy, the reduced input lag feels very nice. Overall, I think the cutbacks they made to get the game to run at a higher FPS are very worthwhile and well done. It's hard to notice them most of the time unless you are specifically looking for them.
Also, bonus, the game runs at an unlocked frame rate on 120 hz/VRR displays, and it pushes into the 80-90 FPS area almost all the time on the PS5, which is insane. Even when the rats are on screen.

Both Apple and Meta will releaese their VR headsets later this year so it's reasonable to believe that Sony are saving some "gun powder" for those releases.
Sony are in a really good position right now in the VR market. There is practically no competition at all so it's not like Sony are in a rush to release more triple A vr games than the three big games they already have released after only 2-3 months.

@@MinosML There are no official sales numbers released for PS VR2, i'm guessing you have probably only heard about those sales numbers from that one journalist at Bloomberg?
The funny thing here is, even if those sales numbers he wrote were correct, those numbers would actually be really good sales numbers and much better sales numbers than the original PS VR which is to this day the best selling wired VR headset of all times and considered a success by Sony.
Btw how can you call the PS VR2 a flop when it has just released only a few months ago? And only about a week ago it got released at the retail stores for the first time in the U.S and in many other countries in the world were you previously had to buy the PS VR2 online.
The marketing push for the PS VR2 is only just getting started.
You think it's by coincidence that Sony Pictures released the new trailer for the upcoming blockbuster movie "Gran Turismo" a couple weeks ago and then a few days later Sony Playstation released a brand new trailer with Bella Ramsey playing GT7 on the PS VR2?
Sony has huge plans for VR moving forward this generation and into the next decade. The PS5 is seamlessly built for VR in mind, the sense technology and the adaptive triggers were all developed for VR in mind to begin with before this tech even found it's way to becoming the Dualsense controllers releasing with the PS5, same thing can be said about the Tempest 3D audio engine, it was developed spesifically for the original PS VR and then further enhanced on the PS5 in preparation for the PS VR2.
About the market size of the VR industry. As of 2023 the VR gaming industry has a market size of $12.13 billion.
The global VR market is projected to reach $26.9 billion by 2027.
There are 65.9 million VR users in the U.S., which is 15% of the country’s population.
There are over 171 million VR users worldwide.
All arrows are pointing upwards, VR will likely enter the mainstream consumer market within the next decade, Sony knows this very well and that's why they are investing so heavely into VR

They don't want to take risks this gen and releasing a new pricey Switch that get washed by the Steam deck & even smartphones seems like a big risk, especially as the Ampere chip doesn't seem a gigantic upgrade over the OG Switch, so if they can't sell the new device on power what else would they sell it on?

A non backward compatible next-gen Nintendo console will have me wait a few years before considering getting it. It will also have me think hard about buying any more games for the Switch as I'll know they'll be tied to an unsupported platform from that moment on.
Backward compatibility is a win-win for platform holders / customers.

I don't think switch 2 will be back compatible.
I don't think it's an huge issue either since we then get a new switch 2 game liberty and u still get to keep the old switch instead of getting rid of it

@Andre you could literally say that about every system... "you get a new PS5 library and can just keep your old PS4!" Or "you get a new Series X library & can keep your old Xbox!"
Yet here we are, and they both have backwards compatibility. People don't want to be locked to old hardware that can't carry forward their library

@@corey2232 And look how that has made a 3 year crossgen period as a result. I rather just have a new system with new games ,a new generation starting day one.
Its also more beneficial for nintendo since they can just release popular switch games as 60fps remasters for the switch 2 and people will gobble that shit up like crazy.

Haha, I totally get you on the hardware stuff. Respect the history and judge each system of its own capabilities. I'm playing tears of the kingdom at the moment and it's got it's hooks in, I love it. I'm also helping my son play through Luigi Mansion 2 on the 3DS. I honestly can look at LM2 and think it looks beautiful on 3DS. I just love gaming!!

I cannot support this argument. Especially when "mid gen refresh" systems exist. Then where do we draw the line? At the base Xbox One VCR? The One X? I mean they play the same games, but games with One X enhancements run extremely poorly on the VCR, but that's the system they're intended for, right? Hell, even a ton of One X games run even better on the Series X (which for all intents and purposes is an Xbox One X with an SSD, let's be real here). The same can be said of the base PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5... So I ask again, where do you draw the line? Nintendo is getting a pass because they're Nintendo. I'm sorry, even though I like the TotK game, its flaws are unacceptable. Sure they crammed this game on to a system with outdated tech even at release, but it does not run well. Instead of saying something moronic like we should play games on the systems they were made for (cause I'll tell you right now GoW ran infinitely better on my PS5 and I'd have killed myself trying to play that on a base PS4), how about we hold Nintendo accountable and call them out? That their unwillingness to change with the times and create a much more powerful system to run their games on shouldn't be tolerated anymore.

@@danbooke2001 - Great post. I think a fairer comparison is cost between devices.
When a Switch costs as much or nearly as much as a Playstation 5 digital version or a base level Steam Deck then it's hard to ignore the technical shortcomings of the Switch imo.

Speaking of framerate and resolution, I do feel like people are (especially in the console space) obsessed with numbers now. Sadly the PS5 and Xbox Series were heavily advertised as "4k 60fps" systems and people are focused on that.
I could be wrong but I don't think the resolution or framerate were that much of a concern for the players during the Xbox One / PS4 time.
It's a shame cause there is so much more into games than just these numbers. Of course they are important and you want the system you've paid for to perform the way you expect, but people need to be realistic as well.
Anyway, my English won't allow me to fully express how I feel about this topic but I'm glad people from DF are still able to say "Yeah, you can enjoy a game at 30fps, it's fine and you won't die".

Frame rate wasn't a concern in the PS4/Xbox one era because the CPUs couldn't run at 60fps and to be frank, console players didn't know better. PC players who had access to higher framerates were banging the 60fps drum for a reason. Now that PS5 and series X had a taste of fully locked 60, they wont let go of it similar to how PC players won't. 30fps is certainly playable, but calling the difference between 30 and 60 "a number" is disingenuous.

The reason companies say “a small percentage of users are affected…” or such is because of legal reasons. They don’t want to invite class action lawsuits in the US, basically.

Lying about an issue can also invite legal issues though. You also don't need a majority of users having a problem for a class action lawsuit to be made.
