    For mechanical sirens, sound does come out the front. In a mechanical siren like the one you have there, it looks like it's forcing the air out the sides with centripetal(centrifugal?) force, and then shutting off the outlets, creating pressure waves on both sides of those holes, which makes sound come out both the holes, and out the front.

    • @ThunderboltSirenStudios
      @ThunderboltSirenStudios 3 місяці тому

      Actually some sound does come out of the intake, not much, but a little bit. Its the reason why the 3rd gen ACA Allertor 125 had a larger intake cone then previous generations. Its to preject thevsound more efficiently.

    That huge speaker he pulled out is called a, "Atlas Speaker". There are two kinds. The dual driver and the single driver. They would usually be found on the, Federal Signal E.O.W.S. series sirens. The E.O.W.S. "SiraTone" controllers would have "amplifiers" which amplify the sound coming out of the speaker. The rotating E.O.W.S. sirens "408,612,816" would have 4,6,8 dual dual driver speakers facing one way. When the siren activates, the speakers would rotate on a big box. The non-rotating E.O.W.S. sirens "1212" would have 12 single driver speakers facing all ways. There are 6 sides with 2 speakers. The E.O.W.S. 1212 prototype (115) has different speakers but acts similar to the normal 1212. All E.O.W.S. sirens have been discontinued.

    I took a old ww2 air raid siren down out of a old foundry that was being demolished and rewound the stator for 240 volts instead of 3 phase 480. Its works awesome and is extremely loud with twin choppers. It more or less looks like a huge bench grinder with a chopper on each end. 👍

    If Jessica likes loud, obnoxious noises, she should love the sound of town fire whistles!!! Those things make tornado sirens seem like a trumpet solo for a high school band!! I'm originally from MA, and there was a fire whistle in every town. Our fire whistle went off routinely at noon, 5pm, and at either 9pm or 10pm for curfew. For an ambulance it went off once, for school cancellations it went off twice then twice again, for auxiliary fires it went off five times twice, and for local fires it first blew three times and then blew the box number (for example, Box 57 would be five blows followed by seven more blows) three times in succession. To make matters worse, the damn whistle was an eerie and terrifying sound that made your teeth rattle and your bones turn cold. Worse than anything, this horrid whistle would blow whenever there was a fire, including the wee hours of the morning - and, trust me, it was NOT a sound that you want to be awakened by at 4AM!!

    • @ThunderboltSirenStudios
      @ThunderboltSirenStudios 3 місяці тому

      Except the loudest whistle only gets 125 decibels measured from 100 feet away. And the chrysler siren they speak of in the video can reach 138 decibels from 100 feets away

    The thunderbolt 1000 is unique because of the blower thing that it has. It has 1 port instead of the same amount as the chopper and instead of being quiet at low notes, it's actually loud as hell even at low frequencies. The ACA Hurricane is the same sort of system but the thunderbolt is better due to adjustable pitches, multiple blowers, easier to work on and actually with it's 5M blower, it is louder than the hurricane as a single tone. (Dual tone is about equal or slightly less.)

    • @PlatinumEagleStudios
      @PlatinumEagleStudios 10 років тому

      Also the fact that the t bolt is VERY editable. You can change the top pitch of it, change the rotation speed, even turn off the rotator completely :-D I don't think the hurricane was that changeable. NO mechanical siren was. And if it was a 1003, you can even change the damper timing for the hi lo. The standard timing is a half second on high, and a half second on low. I remember a while back seeing a video on here were a guy had his T bolt set to do 1 second on high and one second on low. So the T bolt is probably the most customisable siren ever :-D

    • @N617A
      @N617A 10 років тому

      It's also probably one of the furthest carrying sounds under the chrysler... And the single tone is BEASTLY loud!

    Um, actually, a lot of the sound *does* also come out of the front of the siren. Air gets sucked in that way, but at the same time, sound is emanating out of there! In fact, with some models, I've noticed that it seems like more sound comes from the suction horn than from the blow ports.

    To get back to that, does Photon explains for example why that the reflective metal coating of a cd is blasted off under High Voltage discharges? NO, he has fun showing it, but things like, "hey it expands quickly, as it heats way faster thant the plastic support, so it delaminates explosively as the constraints beween the plastic and conductive layer grow superior to the bond of the two layers" No way, so hell, it's my guess, for all I know, and Photon

    Yeah, I've really always thought that running a siren on a fuel-powered machine is really weird and interesting! First off, there's this starter motor that runs before the siren can make its signal! That's way weird! Secondly, how do you keep getting fuel to it in the midst of an air raid?
    The engine on the Chrysler Air Raid Siren isn't "like a gasoline engine;" it IS a gasoline engine! What's this "like" business?

    The mechanical siren is a rather simple concept. The frequency of the sound it puts out is equal to the number of rotations per second times the number of holes around the side. A siren with 11 holes that rotates at 40rps will produce a sound of 440Hz, which is standard concert A.
