Ancient Starships - Rimworld Lore Theory

- Hello everyone! Welcome back to another Rimworld Lore video. This time it's more of a theory and speculative video, as I'm going to try and figure out just how people manage to live on board of the Ancient Starships that are sometimes mentioned through the game, especially within the Shattered Empire backstories and noble titles.

8:14 space isn't exactly cold. since you're in a vacuum, you're only dropping temperature as fast as you're radiating it out. if you're in direct sunlight, you're heating up much more than you're cooling down.
Space isn't cold, because temperature is a property of matter, of which there is a notorious lack.
In fact, getting rid of excess heat is a major issue in space, since basically everything produces heat. Burning fuel? Heat. Running computers? Heat. Catching the rays of distant stars? You guessed it - more heat. Even people just existing produces copious amounts of heat (since we kinda spent the last 3.7 billion years evolving in an environment that constantly steals our heat).
Was about to comment that myself
In space you don't need thermal isolation
but you will absolutely need thermal radiation
All of this technology uses electricity, and electricity produces waste heat through resistance.
additionally starlight, as well as any and all mechanicall movements produce friction, which is heat
ISS has 4 times more thermal radiators than solar panels
Technically cold really just means an absence of heat.
Also, you are only radiating heat when you are venting gases or your ship hull is in contact with matter colder than it.
@@nvfury13 No, that's convection. Black body radiation is what makes coals In the campfire glow. It happens always, for all matter, no need for high temperature, but higher temperature makes Black Body Radiation stronger and shifts the radiated light higher on frequency. At ~500 C this radiation enters visible light.
And at 1500 C we perceive it as white light. That's also why thermovision works. A camera adjusted to catch infra-red and lower wavelengths can see light emitted by room temperature objects.
Only this process is abysmally weaker than convection, which is why all of space crafts bigger than cube sat need to have giant metal sheets sticking far away from it. High thermal conductivity combined with relatively low mass and high surface area means those radiators can release a lot of thermal radiation through Black Body Radiation even without any active systems
I feel like these "theory" videos are the best! They really make you shine and be unique!
Imagine if we're living in the Rimworld universe without knowing, until some imperial ship come across the skye
Yap session started
Yap session finished
excellent content as always, also i checked the description on a hunch and to my delight You specified the exact song You used in the background
looking through the ost is a chore so thanks lmao
you could probably harvest the trails of comets for water and fuel
This video is very interesting statue man. You have earned my interest.
nice video as always i enjoyed it a lot.
i like to imagine characters living on a different planet/space that isn't the rim and this video feeds that with much needed information even if it's theoretical
Another very interesting video. Thanks for the amazing content. I wonder if there's a mod that simulates a spaceship colony with all the complexities you mentioned. Could be really fun!
Save our ship 2 is great
As pigeon said, Save Our Ship 2 is great for that. Its the mod I used for the video's background 😊
heres my lore theory:
the rimworld that we know and love was once an ultratech society, evidenced by the presence of sophiamundian refugees. they likely had this place documented as "friendly glitterworld", and arrived in horror to find it had been toppled. this is also evidenced by old genetic tribes who are alive but extinct and engineered by scientists, who likely lived alongside humans and survived after it collapsed, along with the fact that they have a surplus of ultratechnology. furthermore, the planet was destroyed by the creation of an archotech, who likely tried to ascend and the humans tried to stop it, resulting in the total annihilation of everything. this is evidenced by the fact that both hostile mechanoids and insectoids exist, which were likely placed there by the archotech. even more so, the mechanoids drop down with archotechnology in mech clusters. eg, unstable power cells(vanometric technology) and various psychic devices. the mechanoids are likely the great equalizer, allowing some societies to grow and culling those who become a threat to it or by pure bad luck. also, the description of a vast majority of ruins is either "its been fused into one giant peice" or "its been eroded and looted over time". the "fused into one peice" seems on par with archotech, being able to just blast things with energy, or shut them down entirely and let other people do the rest.
lastly, an archotech would naturally have the power to install psychic drones on the world. everywhere else in the universe, such as on the lore primer, archotech is presumably extremally rare and priceless artifacts for study. here on the rim, (to which an archotech lies near) you can get one of the relics for a couple hundred bucks. some are valuable, but not as much as on other worlds. i have more proof, but i cant be bothered to write it down here cause it gets really long.
The problem with space isn't cold..
It's ACTUALLY heat!
There's no atoms for your heat to jiggle into outside of the ship.
So the only way the ship can cool down is by radiating heat outward into the vacuum, which isn't hot nor cold. It's nothing at all.
The reason space suits are so big and clunky are cause they need refrigerators on em!
Your ship will have a far harder time keeping COOL than keeping warm!
bro accidentally made a SoS 2 ship tutorial
Erm actually humans can survive 15 minutes without oxygen, although for most of that time they would be unconscious 🤓
As a person who lives in the worlds along the rims of the universe, isolated and far from any civilisation, I’m glad to be not in an urbworld(in game)
Noooooooooooo
The little pyramid visual aid you made was so fire. Going above and beyond like that really solidifies you as a unique content creator, as opposed to somebody just reading of the wiki.
Thanks, its really appreciated :)
I agree, great idea
"Karl would approve of this...." *harvests Organs*
Rimworld Lore is the Factorio Endgame of Human Survival.
'God please not an Urbworld or a death world'
Hello sir? Where am I?
A RIMWORLD
I love u Rimworld man please dont die tomorrow
It's not on my schedule
@@thenightarchives4148 on mine tho, sorry. Do not go near windows tomorrow :)
Space is not cold it is insulating because of an almost complete vacuum. It is very easy to generate more heat than you radiate off because of that. The ISS and astronaut suits for example are not running a heating system but a complex cooling system to funnel heat away from the livable sections. Being in direct sunlight exasperates the need for a cooling system as it provides even more heat that is hard to bleed off. When articles state that the temperature out of sun is -157c it is talking about the thermostat in the vacuum which would not be producing much if any heat and only receiving a little from the superstructure it sits on, which means it radiates out more heat than it is getting. As such it tells you what the temperature of a non-reactive object might be at, which the internals of a ship, person, and ISS are not.
That's good info to know :)
i think something like that is also mentioned in the book what if, can a submarine survive in space. i am not sure if it is on YT, but i think so
Just imagine being spawned in Rimworld with all the Vanilla's bugs and cheese tactics
Just being able to run and gun would be crazy advantage against anyone
I started playing Rimworld recently. Thanks to your videos I get to write lore on my custom scenarios, xenotypes and ideologies without feeling out of place. Its always a treat listening to your videos as I play Rimworld
That's awesome!
Same here, though I’m just trying to make a nation
Maybe it's somewhere in thr lore, but how do glitterworlds remain utopias? One would think planets like that would be prime targets to massive space pirate groups or malevolent archotechs. Maybe they have automated fleets around them or planetary shields. Cool to think about ig
It's implied they have large standing militaries
They either outsource military needs to other planets or probably make use of ultratech mechs
you forgot about the possibility of being born into a rimworld colony in which the leader abuses dev mode
Not sure if that's the best or the worst outcome. When I use dev mode, my pawns usually are NOT having a good time.
Hello adept asteroid, personnaly if there's one thing that confuse me with space travel it's the naked brutality starting scenario, since planets are supposed to be lightyears away and combined with the fact we don't start in a cryosleep casket, I wonder how the starting colonist managed to reach a rimworld in a relativly short time
He/she got under anesthesia but something or someone happened to put him in cryptosleep casket and load it on ship or just sold to slaves trader. Someone eventually found it on ship and dedicated to get rid of its insides on some random Rimworld since it doesn’t have any use for them
There is many possibilities and it’s just one of which came in my mind
They were probably put into a cryptosleep casket while under anesthesia
You were robbed of your stuff and sent onto a random rimworld. How or why is up to you.
Al Gore aproved 👍
This is a very interesting video, thank you for making it :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
6:59 psycasters are also probably being used for travelling methods between worlds if they're strong enough
While space itself is cold. Solar radiation would gradualy heat up the ship. So you would probably need both heaters and coolers.
good luck with the cooling.
even if space is cold, there is nothing in it, that takes the energy. so maybe the heat of the astronauts is enough to heat the ship/the ship needs to cool down normally, and not heat.
SAVE OUR SHYP mentioned
WHAT THE FUCK IS CO-COMPATABILITY WITH OTHER MODS!?
Whats combat extended@RocketRaccoonIzHot
Save our ship is a pretty smart way to have a working ship background.
"which couldn't be simply created"
boi, you can literally learn to craft them in the vanilla game if you turn against the Empire by accepting a certain deserter quest, so the Shattered Empire knows how to build them.
Yay new video
vanilla expanded content could be presented as rumor or hear say just a idea

i love all your lore video but sometime your the accent makes me have to listen to a fragment 2-3 times, especially at the beginning of most videos. In fact, I listen to everything that is not music on x2 so it's not a big problem but I suspect that it could be easily improved just by being aware of it, since you usually start speaking a bit unclearly and each time you start speaking fluently about a minute after the video starts
The accent is something I won't be able to do that much about, but it's also the reason on why I constantly upload captions for every video :) I'll try to work on it more over time.
@@thenightarchives4148 well if my entire english is from games and i can understned it most time at speed x2 thme it good. alos like i said it almost alywas first minute of video and them it switch
I would love to be born into a Rimworld. A true frontier. I’d watch tv all day
So you just describe a spaceship. Nothing about Rimworld lore theory
5:20 I think the Word is Space Station, Which, considering its purpose, should also be good enough.
love you bro keep going cool videos have a wonderfull day!!
Never new ancient starships existed
Also great video👍
Pls don’t die at the 27th of June 2026
i love watching your rimworld videos
Currently getting into rimworld lore
I didnt know it was this deep, so i want to ask, has there ever been an explanation to "the man in black" in the lore?
@@claustrophobicmole867 As far as I am aware no. While you can theorize about it, the man black doesnt have any canonic/confirmed lore.
@@thenightarchives4148 i thought there would be more to them because they are one of the few hints of a 4th wall break along with arcotech bs about merging to another reality as if the rimworld world was not the true reality realm
salutari la nea cristi respecte
Question, how do I visit/make a spaceship like in the video, what mods facilitate this?
I think the mod is called "save our ship"
